My husband did not throw away the old shutters at the dacha, but made useful things out of them - now the neighbors are following our example (photo)

Using shutters

The shutters protected the room from bright sunlight, wind and draft, external noise and performed a protective function. In addition, the carved original design became a decorative element and adorned the facade of a wooden house.

Today, shutters are an excellent alternative to curtains and blinds. They will protect from prying eyes, sunlight, noise and bad weather. Moreover, the designs are suitable for small and large, panoramic and roof windows. They will add sophistication and originality to the interior or exterior of the house.

Modern shutters are often installed inside the house, less often - outside. The design is distinguished by easy care and use, simple and quick installation, and aesthetic appearance. In addition, it provides reliable protection against unauthorized entry and can replace bars on windows. At the same time, shutters look more organic and comfortable than classic grilles.

Products are made from wood, metal and plastic. There are internal ranch shutters, roller shutters and louvered shutters, which are distinguished by inclined slats. They do not cover the windows completely, but let in a small amount of light and air. By the way, some types are suitable not only for windows, but also for doors.

Roller shutters and their advantages

Roller shutters have certain advantages over other types and metal grilles. They have:

  • protective function;
  • energy saving;
  • soundproofing;
  • light-regulating;
  • decorative.

Let's look at each in more detail.

Protection function. They perfectly protect the room from prying eyes during the day and prevent outside visitors from entering at night. They have become widespread when closing garages, storefronts, retail stalls, and so on. Not every attacker can open vertical roller shutters. But despite this, they are easy to open and close, roll up and hide in special upper niches.

Energy saving function. They can reduce heat consumption and reduce energy consumption. They give you the opportunity to save big on heating and cooling your premises. On hot summer days, thanks to them, the penetration of light into the house is reduced by 70 percent, which reduces the temperature by an average of 10 degrees. In winter, they resist frosty cold and sharp gusts of wind. All this became possible due to the material used in their manufacture (inside they are equipped with a monolithic layer of polyurethane foam) and the presence of an air gap between the roller shutters and the window. If the roller shutters are kept closed, heat loss is reduced by 30 percent. You can save on air conditioning and additional heating.

Soundproofing function. If your house is located directly in the city center or next to a noisy highway, then roller shutters will save you from constant extraneous noise. They not only block light, cold, heat, but also strong street noise, making your home more calm and comfortable.

Light control function. If the early morning light bothers you, simply move your shutters to the closed position and you can sleep longer on the weekends. This feature is indispensable for those people who make frequent flights to different time zones and need some time to adapt.

Decorative function. They are a wonderful addition to both your home and office, and are a source of beauty, coziness, neatness and style. With the use of modern technologies, roller shutters coated with paint do not change color and are not deformable when exposed to low and high temperatures. Their service life is calculated in decades.

Types of structures

  • Folding with an accordion opening type;
  • Classic swing structures with one or more doors. They are characterized by high mobility and are attached using hinges or hinges;
  • Roll or B is opened using a special drum. Installed on windows and doors;
  • Folding ones have a special design, due to which they cover a certain part of the windows, which is suitable for panoramic glazing.

What are shutters made of?

Wooden structures attract lovers of natural materials. They are pleasant and warm to the touch. Wood breathes, allowing air to circulate in a tightly closed room. It is easy to process. You can make painted shutters with your own hands in different styles. Antique doors are especially popular. The disadvantage of wooden structures is their unreliability. They are easy to remove from their hinges or break off. Such designs are best used in houses equipped with an alarm system.

Plastic models are lightweight and inexpensive. They are perfectly mounted to a frame made of any material. Plastic shutters perform a decorative function. They are often installed on windows in apartments on the upper floors of the house. They provide excellent protection from the sun's rays and help keep the house warm during frosty weather. The thermal insulation coefficient of plastic shutters with a thickness of 24-36 mm is higher than that of wooden models. It will be difficult to protect a house with plastic shutters from unauthorized access. Metal-plastic doors are considered a more reliable option.

The strongest is the metal structure. It will protect against intruders better than others. Metal shutters are mainly made from high quality stainless steel. Armored models are reinforced with special locking mechanisms. The thickness of the steel can exceed 2 mm. It has a polymer powder coating that is applied to protect against corrosion. Armored shutters are often installed on windows in a country house.

Aluminum shutters are often used to decorate windows. They are strong enough to protect your home from burglary. The aluminum construction is light and airy. Even a child can open and close the doors from the inside. After one turn of the handle, they are secured with locks on 4 sides. Aluminum structures do not rust. They are painted in a variety of colors and shades with polyester powder paints that do not have harmful impurities. The appearance of the facade decorative element does not change under the influence of atmospheric conditions. Aluminum shutters with an internal polystyrene foam core can provide the highest thermal insulation coefficient.

Shutters in a wooden house

For a private wooden house, both external and internal shutters (shutters) are suitable. At the same time, it is important to choose an environmentally friendly and natural material that will not compromise safety and will emphasize the atmosphere of a wooden building. Therefore, in this case, only wood products are suitable.

Wood is characterized by environmental friendliness and naturalness, ease of installation and maintenance. Wood does not attract dust and looks aesthetically pleasing. Modern wooden shutters undergo special protective treatment, which prevents the negative effects of moisture and dampness, ultraviolet radiation and insects.

For small roof windows, choose designs with one sash that opens like an entrance door. For standard windows of a country house or cottage, classic double-leaf shutters are suitable. “MariSrub” craftsmen will select the necessary materials, install and finish the windows.

The MariSrub company offers an integrated approach to the construction and finishing of a wooden house. We carry out project development and installation of the log house, installation of the foundation and roofing, protective treatment and insulation of the house. We offer construction from timber and logs according to an individual or standard project from the manufacturer.

Qualities of shutters in private homes

At first glance, shutters appear to be mini-doors that were attached to windows that helped keep direct sunlight out of the windows.

Why do the windows of a private house have to have shutters?

But shutters have other useful properties:

  1. Shutters have always primarily served a decorative function in private homes . Modern blinds may add color to the inside of a room, but their decorative effect is useless on the outside. Shutters decorated houses both outside and inside.
  2. The shutters also protected the home from direct sunlight. It was enough to close the shutters in a private wooden house to save yourself from the blinding sun in the summer.
  3. The shutters also served a protective function - they protected against the entry of thieves., as they were made from durable wood.

Thus, shutters have always had important purposes, which has led home owners to use them for centuries. Nowadays, the relevance of shutters has sharply decreased - wooden, beautifully decorated with carvings, shutters will not protect against thieves, although they have an undeniable decorative effect. In addition, shutters in a private house no longer protect from the sun, since everyone has blinds installed, which cope with this task more effectively than shutters.

Creation of a wooden structure

To make window shutters, boards are joined to form a shield. The finished shield is tightened with clamps. To avoid damaging the wood, you need to use cushioning material. The shield is secured with wooden slats. They are attached to the inside. The most reliable is the Z-shaped form of fastening the slats. The movable and supporting frames are formed from 5x5 cm beams located horizontally and vertically. The fixed frame is secured with quickly hardening cement.

Cladding boards are fixed with bitumen mastic. For reliability, you can screw in screws. The fixing adjustable stops are mounted with bolts and nuts, and the frames are installed in the upper part.

The hinges must first be secured to the frame and then to the shutters. The sash is leveled using a level and secured with a latch. It is installed last. To attach the brackets to the frame with screws, you need to make 2 recesses on both sides.

At the last stage of installation of the structure, 4 boards are attached around the perimeter of the window opening.

While working, you must remember safety precautions. It is recommended to carry out installation wearing gloves and safety glasses.

Preparing to create wooden sashes

Making a wooden structure is the simplest and cheapest solution. Although wood is inexpensive, processing it will require additional costs. Exterior shutters are most often made from pine, cedar, ash or larch.

To install wooden shutters on windows with your own hands, you need to prepare a circular saw, tape measure, electric drill, building level, electric plane and screwdrivers. You will need connecting elements and fastening devices.

Making a wooden structure is the simplest and cheapest solution

The wood must be dried and impregnated with water-repellent and antiseptic agents. If drying oil is used, it must be preheated. The wood is coated with drying oil until it stops absorbing it.

Before starting work, process the window opening with a grinding machine. After this, you need to take measurements. Measurements are taken along slopes and strips. The results need to be transferred to the drawing. Once the type of window with shutters has been determined, you can begin cutting the wood.

To create shutters, boards about 2.7 cm thick are used. The cut areas must be treated with drying oil.

The easiest way is to provide a tongue and groove connection. This model will be very reliable. A groove is made on one side, and a tongue and groove on the other. After joining, the parts are structurally aligned.

The cut elements are cleaned with sandpaper (electric planer or sanding machine) and coated with varnish or paint. If you cover the shutters with stain, they will acquire a beautiful shade.

The first coat should be sanded with sandpaper and only after that a second coat of varnish should be applied. It must be diluted by half with solvent. The second coating also needs to be cleaned. The third layer does not need to be diluted with solvent. Installation of shutters begins after marking has been applied.
