I’m telling you about my inexpensive table with a basic assembly from Leroy Merlin. Strong and stable, modern-looking, extremely versatile and protected - suitable for the workplace, for children, and for the kitchen. You can also buy it with delivery, bring it from the store in any car and assemble it yourself in 10 minutes.
In short: the table is made from 3 elements of parts purchased from Leroy and assembled using a screwdriver without special knowledge.
Buying list:
- 1 Kitchen countertop “Pine Loft” 120 * 60 cm from Delina;
- 2 bases for the Loft work surface 710 mm from Duck and Dog;
- 16 wood screws, for example, hanging or packaged.

Why should you buy a desk?
A desk for a schoolchild is a very necessary thing. The table should be large enough to comfortably place books, an atlas, laptop or computer on it and so that nothing distracts from your studies.
Also, the height of the table should not be too high or, on the contrary, low. Regardless of age, the table should be comfortable and the chair should be correctly selected for it.
To make sure that a desk is a necessary thing, just look at a photo of a desk on the Internet. It fits well into the overall design of the room. You definitely shouldn’t give up this piece of furniture.
My search for a table
It turns out that buying a simple table, kitchen or computer, is an expensive proposition. For a simple dining room they ask for more than 5,000 rubles, and it is made of simple panels, for more or less decent kitchen ones they ask for around 10,000 rubles, for computer ones - even more.
Having studied the websites of IKEA and other furniture stores, and having visited a dozen stores, I came to the conclusion that good tables cost 15,000 rubles. and higher. The requirements were basic:
- Size for 1-3 people for the kitchen or 1 equipped place with a computer;
- Strong edges and coating of the tabletop itself;
- Stable legs;
- Lack of crossbars and shields under the tabletop to avoid hitting your legs.
I didn’t want to make a table myself - the Internet is full of diagrams of how people with golden hands make comfortable and very cheap tables from timber, furniture panels, laminated chipboard panels. Some people spend 500 rubles on a table, while others spend several thousand and get it done.
I didn’t need all this, I wanted a ready-made table that I could just bring home, or, at most, assemble it like in IKEA. It would also be nice for it to be comfortable and not scary - this became a challenge.
What types of desks are there?
The desk can be of different shapes:
- Desk with drawers.
- Corner desk.
- Desk with shelves.
- Table transformer.
- Computer desk.
In exceptional cases, a computer desk and a desk can be one table. But you shouldn’t do this if your child spends a lot of time studying. Harmful computer study can cause enormous harm to a child's health.
First, parents need to decide where to put the desk and chair.
The location of a desk or desk in a room is one of the most important points when planning a workplace, and this should be approached with the utmost seriousness, having thought through everything down to the smallest detail.

An ordinary table is not a very comfortable thing, even if it is made very well. In order to have all the necessary things at hand, it is better to buy a desk with drawers.
The boxes should be positioned so as not to get in the way. Typically, drawers are placed under the table on the side or directly above where the chair sits. The drawers can also be arranged as a small cabinet on top.
Cabinets are usually not made too large, the main thing is that they fit stationery, paper and other things.
DIY desk. Manufacturing instructions
Making a desk yourself is quite simple, provided you have ready-made drawings.
Even an inexperienced home craftsman can handle this task. The material from which we will assemble the table is a laminated chipboard sheet. This material is quite widely used for making furniture. Using ready-made drawings, you need to cut a sheet of chipboard. You can cut it yourself, or you can, after spending a little money, use the services of the store where you bought the furniture laminate. This is the most convenient option, since the store has specialized equipment, and you only have to pay for an already sawn sheet.
You can also glue the edges to the ends right in the store. The cost of this service is also not significant, but the quality will be much higher than that of an edge glued at home.
It is best to connect individual parts of the table with furniture screws. This fastening option is quite simple and strong.
It’s worth preparing all the necessary tools right away so that you have them at hand and don’t have to run around for them. So, what is needed: first of all, a drill and drill bits, then a tape measure, screws, and a screwdriver. By the way, the type of screwdriver and drill bits are selected depending on the head of the furniture screw.
Compliance with the dimensions in the drawing is not important, because the table can be made just for you: for a preschooler, a child, a teenager. By observing the proportions, you can safely change the size of the table.
You need to assemble the table in strict sequence so as not to make mistakes with the markings.
1. You need to drill holes in the end walls of the blanks for the table legs.
2. Next, using a larger diameter drill, you need to drill a groove for the upper part of the screw.
3. One of the side walls of the table must be attached to the inner wall of the future table. Here it is necessary to pay special attention to ensure that all the upper ends are at the same level. If there are even small errors, assembling the table can become difficult.
4. Then you need to drill a hole for the screw and tighten it.
5. Having already tightened the screw, you need to drill another hole for the second screw, and you also need to tighten it.
6. You must do the same with the second side of the table.
The table cover must be secured in the same order as the side walls. But you need to pay attention that the size of the table top exceeds the size of the internal and side walls. These tabletop dimensions are made specially. In fact, a desk is usually placed either in a corner or near a wall. The ledge of the table top is left so that the table can be placed more tightly, since if it is made without a ledge, the baseboard will interfere with this.
The size of the tabletop protrusion behind the back wall depends on the size of the plinth, usually it is about 5 cm. After the table assembly is completed, it is necessary to “hide” the heads of the self-tapping screws. Decorative plugs are used for these purposes. The color of the plugs is selected in accordance with the color of the selected furniture laminate.
After installing the plugs on the heads of the screws, you get a classic-looking desk. The use of furniture self-tapping screws makes furniture assembly quite simple, so anyone can now assemble furniture.
Corner desk
A corner desk is a great option for small rooms. In such rooms, furniture is placed so that it does not interfere with movement.
But a corner table for studying is not the best option, even though it looks very beautiful and even too interesting. A children's desk is a serious thing, so choosing a table must be approached very responsibly.
Straight table

The classic version of furniture is intended mainly for simple written work. The advantage of this type is good concentration on work and the ability to feel free. In this way, your attention is not wasted, and your productivity at work increases significantly. The stubborn table has its own requirements. If you have enough free space along the wall, then you will be comfortable working in your room.
Why shouldn't you buy a corner desk?
Has a negative impact on the student’s posture. During classes, it interferes with normal lighting. A corner table can have either drawers or shelves.
You can buy a corner desk if both parts are large enough so that one part has enough space for studying, and the other part can accommodate a computer or a shelf.
Despite some disadvantages, a corner table is quite inexpensive compared to other options.
It is very important to think about where to put the computer and whether it is needed at all
It is impossible to imagine modern life and study without a computer. Many children already know how to use it perfectly by the time they start school. But all parents understand that in the first grade it will not be needed often. Whether it is worth installing a computer in a beginning student’s room now is up to you to decide, but in this matter it is important to remember its safe and convenient location.
