Main areas and furniture layouts
As a rule, this room is divided into the following areas:
- For storage. There are cabinets and shelves with food supplies and utensils, as well as a refrigerator.
- For preparing products. This includes the cutting table and sink.
- For cooking. There is a stove or hob and an oven here.
The layout of the kitchen space depends on the size of the room: when arranging a large area, you can allow it to be furnished on a grand scale, but in a small area you cannot do without optimization.
Here are the options for placing furniture in a spacious kitchen:
- U-shaped. The preparation, cooking and storage areas are each located on its own side of the letter P.
- Two parallel lines. One of these zones is opposite the other two.
- Island - everything is located in the middle of the kitchen. A modification in the form of a “peninsula” is possible - when either a sink or a stove is placed in the center.
If you have enough space, you can afford a kitchen with such an unusual layout.
There are only two options for using a kitchen space with a small area: either in one line, or in a corner (in this case, the refrigerator and stove are located at opposite ends, and the sink is located in the middle). In such rooms, special fittings for the storage area – the so-called internal equipment – play a huge role. It makes it possible to place a huge number of things not just “in a cramped space, but not in a big way,” but in such a way that it will be easy and convenient to get them out.
Manufacturing materials
The kitchen is a place where people spend a lot of time and actively use furniture, so it must be made of high quality materials. This applies to all elements of the product, including the frame, filling and upholstery. The more thoroughly their quality is checked, the longer the headset will last.

Frame
The frame requirements for kitchen sofas and armchairs are quite strict. The furniture frame must be as resistant to fluctuations in temperature or humidity as possible, as well as to physical influences. The following materials are used for production:
- Natural wood. Frames made of oak, birch, beech or coniferous trees have optimal cost and quality indicators. With proper protection from external influences and timely care, products based on them last for decades.
- Chipboard, MDF. Budget materials for the manufacture of supporting elements of upholstered furniture with a choice of any color and texture. Despite all the advantages (availability, lightness, ease of processing), they do not tolerate contact with moisture well and have a limited service life - 5-10 years.
- Aluminum, chromed metal, stainless steel. Very reliable and stylish frames are made from these materials. The disadvantages of operation include the risk of scratches on floor coverings and poor compatibility with some types of interiors.
Plastic is rarely used for the manufacture of supporting parts of the frame; due to its characteristics, this material is better suited for auxiliary elements. Most often it is combined with metal or chipboard than with wood. Regardless of the material chosen, the frame must be durable.

Upholstery
For the upholstery of kitchen sofas, materials are used that are maximally resistant to moisture, wear, dirt and unpleasant odors. Options that do not require complex maintenance are preferred. Information about the most popular types, taking into account their advantages and disadvantages, is presented in the table.
Upholstery material | pros | Minuses |
Velor, velvet | Aesthetics, comfort | Absorption of odors, difficulty in care, abrasion |
Flock | Resistant to stains, easy to clean, tolerates contact with pets' claws well | Rapid accumulation of dust, absorption of odors |
Eco leather | Availability, practicality, resistance to moisture, fat, odors | Doesn't recover from cuts |
Genuine Leather | Durability, aesthetics, practicality, resistance to most external influences | Expensive, sticks to the skin in hot weather, risks of absorbing strong aromas |
You should avoid using difficult-to-care textiles. A rare exception in the kitchen are sets with upholstery made of natural or artificial suede, tapestry, jacquard, but these options are not suitable for families with children. Eco-leather is considered a universal material; high-quality brands retain their integrity and aesthetics for a long time.

Filler
Foam rubber or polyurethane foam are most often used as filler. The first option is cheaper, but not all of its types meet the quality requirements. This type of padding quickly restores its shape after pressing. Furniture filled with polyurethane foam is more expensive, but it is much more durable and environmentally friendly than foam rubber. This option is recommended to choose when purchasing upholstered furniture for catering establishments or if there are children in the family.
Regardless of the type of filler or type of upholstery, you should pay attention to the quality of the seams, the absence of gaps or tightening.

Places for food supplies and utensils
There will always be “pieces” of space that can be used more rationally. Some of them have long been mastered, for example, almost every housewife has rails on the wall between the cutting table and wall cabinets. Using hooks on these metal profiles it is convenient to attach ladles, whisks, spatulas and other “trifles”. However, today these devices have found wider application. They are equipped with lattice baskets and shelves on which sets, sets and technical devices that are needed almost every day are placed. This open storage allows you to save time on finding the right items.
But not everyone knows how to fully use corner bedside tables: few people understand what a “magic corner” is until they see a photo of it in the interior of a kitchen space. This fitting consists of shelves linked together like train carriages. The two front ones are attached to the inner surface of the door and, when the cabinet is opened, they move forward, pulling the next pair along the guides. The design allows you to effortlessly get out what is stored there.
Magic corner shelves extended
What other types of equipment can be found from manufacturers:
- Lattice shelf with a cutout for a drain pipe. Installed in a cabinet with a sink.
- Bottle holders are narrow retractable systems on which it is convenient to place jars and boxes. They are placed in tight spaces between the slab and the wall.
- A column is a tall, narrow cabinet, all the shelves of which move out at once, you just have to pull the facade towards you. This is a great option for those who want to have a single look at their food supplies.
To make full use of the boxes, inserts are used. These are trays for cutlery, holders for knives, dividers for spices, cells for small utensils. They help maintain order: everything is always in place!
"Stuffing" for the kitchen
The modern kitchen is increasingly being integrated into the living environment; it is rightly called the new living room of the 21st century.
This is facilitated by design, thoughtful organization of work areas and storage areas, and clever mechanisms that increase comfort. A kitchen consists of many components. Everything is important: the layout of the cabinets, materials, color, appliances, accessories, but most of all, high-quality fittings and “fillings”. These are the components produced by Blum, Grass (both Austria), Kessebhmer, Hettich, Hailo, Vauth-Sagel (all Germany), Salice, Vibo (both Italy). They are equipped with kitchens of all European and many domestic ones, “Announcement”, “Atlas-Lux”, “Dryad”, “Eurocomfort”, “Kitchens Maria”, “Kitchen Courtyard”, “Legna”, “Resurs-M” (kitchens under the trading brand Giulia Novars), “Sputnik Style”, “Stylish Kitchens”, “Forema-Kitchens”, “Edel”, “Ekomebel”, “Elt”, Virs (all Russia).

Storage boxes differ not only in their format, but also in the most varied internal organization. In order not to fragment the front design, not one, but two drawers are hidden behind the facade (1, 3). A handle with a “leash” allows you to open the inner top drawer at the same time as the bottom one. By unfastening the “leash”, you can detach the top drawer if you don’t currently need it. In the cooking area, from an ergonomic point of view, it is more rational to place cutlery and frequently used dishes not in the upper cabinets, but under the countertop, on which food is mainly prepared (2).
When planning a kitchen, today special emphasis is placed on wide-format (900, 1000, 1200 mm) drawers that extend to the full depth. They can withstand a weight of 30-80 kg, so you can store everything in them, from small items to heavy utensils. Depending on the design of the drawers, roller or ball guides with partial or full extension are used. In order to protect the fronts and sides of drawers from premature wear, and your hearing from irritating slamming, it is wiser to order drawers equipped with a soft-closing system integrated into the guides, which performs two functions. The mechanism “holds out” the drawer until it closes completely and slows it down on the last 2-3 cm of the way, carefully and silently bringing the front to the body. Each hardware manufacturer has developed its own systems.
You can open the drawer using an electric drive (Easys system - for Hettich, Servo-Drive - for Blum, Sensotronic - for Grass) by lightly pressing any point on the front panel, and close it with just a touch.
There are many solutions
Hettich Before purchasing kitchen furniture, don’t be lazy and go to furniture showrooms, look at everything that is in the showrooms, and think about what fittings your kitchen will be equipped with, consult with a consultant, ask what systems they can offer you. Find out what load the box can withstand, pay attention to the sides (this is especially true for the bottom drawers): they should not be very low, otherwise packages, cans and boxes may fall out. And if household utensils are also secured in drawers using dividers or liners, this will only be beneficial. It is more convenient to keep cutlery and constantly used accessories in full-drawers under the countertop in the cooking area and be sure to use separator systems for this.
Experts advise that when planning a kitchen, provide for five zones (storage of supplies, placement of dishes and utensils, washing, food preparation and cooking) and adapt each zone as much as possible to personal needs and your own operating mode. And to expand the usable space, there are many ways - for example, using drawers with high side and back walls. The drawers will become more spacious if you use a system of single or double longitudinal (round or rectangular in cross-section) rails that will secure the contents, as well as extending the side walls with inserts (glass, translucent acrylic or metal).

4.Le-Mans tilt-and-slide mechanism. The configuration of the shelves allows you to make maximum use of the cabinet space. 5.The lifting door of the upper cabinet can be kept open during operation. 6.The Cosario tray combines attractive design and new technologies. It is mounted under a wall cabinet. Movable dividers allow you to organize the tray as you wish, a built-in light element illuminates the bottom of the cabinet when closed, and illuminates the contents when open.
Hardware manufacturers have developed dozens of plug-in systems for organizing order in drawers - original organizers-inserts.
Corners and hard-to-reach areas in both lower and upper kitchen modules can be made functionally useful and easily accessible if equipped with rotating elements (Kessebhmer, Vauth-Sagel, Vibo). These are rotating metal baskets, “carousels”, built-in columns and semi-columns with carousel mechanisms.
In addition to the refrigerator, other places are required to store food supplies. Tall narrow pencil cases with static shelves were replaced by column cabinets equipped with baskets with a lattice, glass or plastic bottom and attached to a frame - all this forms a single complex that moves out along with the facade as one large box. They provide side access to products. Such storage systems can be built under the countertop, into free-standing cabinets or directly into the kitchen front.

7.When fully opened, the retractable storage system can be rotated either to the right or to the left. 8. Hettich movable trays above the sides ensure efficient use of internal space. 9.The universal system of dividers makes it possible to divide the box into several cells of different sizes.
The body width of the built-in columns offered by Vauth-Sagel is 300, 400, 600mm, and the installation depth is 500mm. At the same time, the height of the frame varies between 1200-2350mm.
Swing columns are also modernized: either they are equipped with retractable mesh shelves or baskets, or internal rounded ones are added to the outer rectangular baskets, which are attached to the doors. Swinging open, the doors with baskets push forward two more rows of baskets for everyone to see.
Wall cabinets continue to actively “participate” in the life of the kitchen. Thanks to lifting mechanisms with an integrated soft-closing function, the doors of wall cabinets (horizontal folding, sliding flap, lifting door), equipped with a damper, rise smoothly and silently. The mechanisms securely fix the door in any position from 45 and above.

Accessories for drawers and doors
Features that make working in the kitchen easier include gas lifts and lifts for upward-opening doors. It is enough to press the sash or move it slightly and it rises smoothly. Often, such systems are also equipped with clamps that allow you to adjust the degree of opening, and closers that return the facades to their original place.
One of the lifting mechanisms options
Drawers can also be equipped with “conveniences” - telescopic guides. They allow extension not by three quarters, as with conventional ball or roller ones, but completely.
Using all kinds of internal equipment - roof rails, mesh shelves for hard-to-reach places, closers, it is very easy to make the kitchen the most comfortable room in the house!
