Why do you need decorative sofa pillows?

Is it necessary at all or can it be done without it?

There is an opinion that the most beneficial sleep is sleeping without a pillow. The spine is in an absolutely straight position, which prevents all possible curvatures. However, today it has been proven that this is not so and the statement is a big mistake. While sleeping on a flat surface, the cervical vertebrae are under tension, so the body cannot relax and rest. This can subsequently lead to various problems, such as headaches, pain in the neck and shoulders, curvature of the spine and others.

What should you keep in mind when choosing a pillow?

The main condition when choosing a pillow is that it supports not only the head, neck, but also the shoulders of the sleeper. This position will help you wake up cheerful, cheerful and avoid the development of diseases.

The shape, size and firmness of your bedroom staple should be chosen based on your primary sleeping position, body type and your preferences.

General recommendations

There are some general points that require special attention.

  • The standard size of a sleeping pillow is 50 by 70 cm.
  • If you prefer to sleep on your side, then opt for higher pillows. This option will help you provide proper neck support and avoid neck bending.
  • If you spend most of your sleep on your back or stomach, then your right choice is a flat pillow.
  • If you have wide shoulders, then you should take a closer look at wide pillows. They will help compensate for the bending of the vertebrae.
  • The ideal height of the pillow is considered equal to the width of the shoulder.

Difference in different countries

Standard pillow sizes vary from country to country. Typically, the length of the product varies from 40 to 80 cm, the width can be 30 – 70 cm. Most brands adhere to these indicators (40x40, 50x60, 60x60, 65x65 cm), although there are individual models, the parameters of which are fundamentally different from the accepted standards. These include products for pregnant women with lengths of more than one meter.

Modern dimensions of Russian manufacturers remain true to square shapes: the sizes of standard pillows from our companies are 60x60, 70x70 cm. In addition, 50x70 cm has recently been added to them. Today, large sizes are becoming a thing of the past, giving way to analogues without unnecessary useless space.

Imported standards are more elongated and resemble rectangles in shape. They are made in three sizes: 75x50, 85x50, 50x100. The latest models allow one person or two to sit on one pillow, they also find their buyer.

The developed European standard includes three parameters that are generally accepted norms and are already familiar from the name “euro”: these are pillows measuring 65x65, 40x80, 50x75 cm.

Often, brands, for the convenience of purchasing a particular model, enter the size range of pillows in a special table, thereby offering buyers a visual aid for choosing.

What size are standard pillows?

Now there are many options on the market with non-standard sizes. Large square pillows, popular in Soviet times, the standard dimensions of which are 70 by 70 cm, are already becoming a thing of the past. When making your choice, chasing originality will be a mistake. For example, unusual round and oval options are far from the most convenient and practical. Focus on square and rectangular pillow shapes. The standard sizes of the main bedroom accessories are 40-80 cm in width and 30-50 cm in length. Square-shaped pillows are often 50 by 50 cm or 40 by 40. For example, Americans believe that the ideal pillow size for quality rest is 50 by 70 cm.

What types of sleeping pillows are there? Form

Pillows come in the following shapes.

  1. Square or rectangular . These two forms are the most popular and familiar.
  2. In the form of a roller . This pillow is best suited for back sleepers as it provides good support for the neck and back of the head.
  3. In the shape of a horseshoe . Such pillows are rarely used for sleeping in bed; they are chosen mainly by those who are forced to sleep in a car or on an airplane, as well as those who like to read before bed. The horseshoe pillow relieves tension from the neck muscles when a person is in a sitting or semi-sitting position.
  4. Round . A pancake pillow can rarely be found in the bedroom, since such an original shape of pillows is not very comfortable. At night you have to adjust it often so that it stays under your head and doesn’t slip out.
  5. With protrusions and recesses (a recess in the area where the head is located on the pillow, a protrusion in the neck area). Conventional square or rectangular pillows can have this “anatomical” shape, but more often this configuration is found in orthopedic products. Thanks to this unusual shape of the pillows (however, many have already become accustomed to it), the most natural position of the neck and head is ensured during sleep.
  6. Irregular shaped pillows . It is strongly not recommended to choose too original pillow shapes for sleeping. Most of them are actually decorative, they are intended to decorate the bedroom, and not for sleeping. Accordingly, they are not suitable for normal recreation. As a rule, they are too hard or soft, made from “inappropriate” materials, and their use is not hygienic, since you are unlikely to find a pillowcase in the shape of a log or a blimp in stores.

So, we decided on the form. What other sleeping pillows are there, and by what other criteria is it important to evaluate them?

Orthopedic models

In addition to the usual options, orthopedic pillows are also available on the market. Their standard sizes do not differ from ordinary ones. They also come in a variety of shapes and functions. For example, an ergonomic pillow has a special indentation for the head, which helps reduce the likelihood of developing osteochondrosis; a pillow shaped like a cushion helps reduce the load on the cervical vertebrae. Natural fillers are used (such as, for example, latex, bamboo and some others) or new proven synthetic options. Many of them have the effect of remembering your head and neck position, so they provide good support throughout the night. Orthopedic pillows, the standard dimensions of which are 50 by 70 cm, do not differ much in appearance from ordinary ones. However, it is their properties that can sometimes cause poor sleep due to unfamiliarity, and they are recommended, as a rule, for people who already have any medical problems.

Fillers

You can find a large number of filler options on store shelves. They can be divided into three groups:

1. Synthetic fillers. Among them are:

  • Sintepon. A very economical option. It withstands washing perfectly, is lightweight and does not cause allergies. However, this filler does not hold its shape well, the pillow quickly becomes very thin, and lumps may appear in it. She won't be able to serve you for long.
  • Comforel. It is a filler in the form of soft silicone balls. It washes well, is lightweight and hypoallergenic, and, unlike synthetic padding, keeps its original shape well.
  • Holofiber. Its properties resemble fluff and is its best substitute. It tolerates machine washing well, but the water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees. Non-allergenic. Suitable for lovers of soft pillows. However, excessive softness is also a disadvantage of holofiber. In order to avoid excessive softness, this synthetic filler is often mixed with other types.
  • Silicone. A very versatile and popular filler, as it has a long list of positive qualities: hypoallergenic, convenient and practical to care for, washes well and does not lose its shape, and has good air permeability. Its only drawback is the ability to become electrified.
  • Memorix. An excellent filler with many pleasant properties. Memorix does not cause allergies, is highly breathable and does not absorb moisture or odors; it takes the shape of your head and neck, which contributes to proper support and even distribution of the load. Its only downside is the price.

Thus, we can highlight the following disadvantages of artificial fillers: softness, not all hold their shape well, some squeak a little.

The advantages of artificial fillers: reasonable price, allow air to pass through well, are easy to clean, do not absorb odor or moisture, and do not cause allergies.

2. Natural fillers of animal origin. Among them are:

  • Down and feather. There are pillows containing only feather, only down, or a mixture (feather and down). Many of us have been accustomed to this type of filler since childhood, and it has its advantages. For example, down and feathers provide good warmth and keep their shape perfectly. However, this filler is difficult to maintain, as it easily absorbs moisture and requires periodic drying. In addition, feathers and down can cause allergies, as they are an excellent habitat for mites to live and reproduce.
  • Wool. These pillows usually use sheep or camel wool. This option is more for everyone, since the advantages include a healing effect and breathability. While wool has quite a few disadvantages: it has a specific smell, which will not suit everyone, it requires special care (it cannot be washed, you will have to take the pillows to a specialized salon for cleaning), and it can cause allergies.
  • Horsehair. Absorbs moisture well and keeps its shape, but these pillows are quite hard.

Thus, the advantages of fillers of animal origin are: the ability to allow air to pass through well, absorb moisture, and cure some problems.

Disadvantages of fillers: often a specific smell, the possibility of developing allergies, difficulties in care.

3. Natural fillers of plant origin.

  • Latex. A filler that does not cause allergies, holds its shape perfectly, is machine washable and can serve you for a long time. It is mainly preferred by manufacturers of orthopedic products. The only negative is the price.
  • Seaweed. Such pillows allow air to pass through well and absorb moisture and do not cause allergies, but you may have difficulty cleaning and processing them.
  • Buckwheat. A medicinal filler, therefore it has both pros and cons. This pillow helps massage the head and neck, helping to improve blood circulation and relieve tension and swelling, but the husk rustles and requires special care. This filler will not last you a long time.
  • Silk. These pillows are very light, elastic and hold their shape well, are breathable and do not cause allergies. The only negative is the price.
  • Bamboo. This type of filler is becoming increasingly popular among consumers. It is easy to care for, does not cause allergies, holds its shape perfectly, prevents the growth of bacteria and can please you for a long time. The only caveat is that some may find it harsh.

Thus, the advantages of natural fillers of plant origin are: hypoallergenic, breathable, possible therapeutic effect.

Cons: not all keep their shape well and can last a long time.

Floor pillows in the interior

Let's face it, everyone likes sitting on the floor. But it’s somehow not appropriate for adults to do this, even despite the fact that for a long time many peoples slept, ate and spent their time at home practically on the floor, or more precisely, on special floor pillows. In recent years, furniture designers have already brought us a little closer to the ground by introducing bean bag chairs, but we suggest going further and trying to add floor cushions to the interior. There is very little information about them on the RuNet, so we wandered around the global network and found the most inspiring examples for you.

Pillows that live on the floor are perhaps the most informal piece of furniture that can create a relaxed atmosphere and are perfect for gatherings with old friends. Pillows are indispensable when there are children in the house: they constantly play on the floor, and pillows, at least partly, will relieve you of worries that the child will catch a cold.

Pillows do not always require an interior in ethnic colors. They can become a bright accent in a “Scandinavian” home or, sewn in patchwork style, fit into a country-style apartment.

Modern modifications of pillows look very stylish - knitted from thick yarn in the style of a pouf. They will be appropriate even in a loft.

Pillows can be used instead of chairs for a small tea party. If they are designed in light, natural colors, this will add Japanese notes to the interior.

As you can see from the photo above, pillows are quite appropriate even in a masculine, monochrome interior.

They can even replace furniture - turn into a sofa...

Of course, pillows on the floor are not a universal thing; they are not suitable for every person and not every interior. Firstly, it is worth considering who will use the pillows. Children will certainly be delighted with them, but if the adults living in the house have joint problems, using a new piece of furniture can turn into torture.

Floor cushions place demands on order - the floor must be perfectly clean, free of dust. This is necessary both to avoid getting the pillows dirty and to make it easy for you to breathe even if you are close to the floor. In any case, you should choose pillows with removable covers so that they can be washed from time to time.

And, of course, if you want to buy pillows, think about whether there is room for them on your floor, whether they will interfere with walking along the usual “paths” and whether they will fit into the interior in height. In the room where you are going to put the pillows, the “center of gravity” should be shifted towards the floor, otherwise those sitting on them will feel uncomfortable surrounded by high tables and cabinets, and the pillows themselves will seem to have fallen to the floor.

I hope that you were inspired by the idea of floor pillows and did not find any contraindications.

Pillows for children

This is a separate category of pillows. And you need to approach their choice with special care. There is a huge selection of pillows of various shapes and sizes on store shelves. You shouldn’t chase originality; it’s better to stick to time-tested options. The standard size of a baby pillow is 40 by 60 cm. The height of the baby pillow should correspond to half the width of the baby's shoulder. When choosing a pillow for your child, you need to consider that it should be:

  • hypoalogenic;
  • good air permeability and moisture absorption;
  • keep in shape;
  • be elastic;
  • light;
  • easy to care for.

Decorative pillows

Decorative pillows have long been an integral element of the interior. They help you relax, create mood and comfort. Their sizes and shapes are very diverse. For example, the standard size of a sofa cushion is 40 by 40 cm. On store shelves you can find pillows in the shape of squares, rectangles, bolsters, round shapes and many others.

A sleeping place requires the presence of several pillows for sleeping; everything else is just a decorative element. Additionally, you can choose several decorative pillows, for example, to match the color of the wallpaper or bedspread, slightly changing their tone. The standard sizes of decorative pillows are 40 by 40 cm. However, when creating your own space, you can experiment and create.

What does pillow size affect?

The dimensions of a pillow are the length, width and height of the product, which can change with weight load depending on the type of filler. If earlier these accessories were not given due attention, they had no variety and were considered ordinary bedding, today the opinion has changed dramatically. Scientific data and a number of studies have proven that size and shape matter, while the absence of a pillow is harmful to health: the spinal column is curved in the shoulder and cervical regions.

Pillowcases

You need to choose bed linen not only according to its color scheme, but also based on its size. Thus, the standard sizes of pillowcases are 70 by 70 cm (Russian models), while when choosing a European version of a pillow, do not forget to choose the appropriate set of linen.

Organizing and decorating your bedroom is a very important process, and choosing the right pillows is an integral part of it. Be careful when purchasing, and your sleep will be sound and your awakening pleasant.

DIY pillow: step-by-step guide

Use thick, abrasion-resistant fabric

You can make floor pillows on your own; to do this, just find the necessary pattern on the Internet and begin the manufacturing process. It is recommended to make a pyramid shape, since it is the easiest option to make yourself.

For the shape you need to cut out several triangles with equal sides. Small balls or polystyrene can be used as filler. For the cover, you can use sofa fabric or other upholstery material with high strength.

For a “pyramid” with sides of 115 cm, pieces of fabric 240x120 cm should be used. If the piece of furniture is smaller, namely 85 cm, then material measuring 180x90 cm can be used.

For filler, 3 kg of polystyrene will be enough. The parts are sewn together using a sewing machine using related materials.

Work process:

  1. The pillow is marked. You need to fold the fabric in half and use chalk to draw a center that will be on the fold.

  2. You need to transfer all the designations that are in the pattern to the material.
  3. Now you can sew. The internal parts are aligned and pinned together to prevent misalignment, and the section is stitched. To make the floor cushions durable, you can add extra stitching. 15 mm is removed from the edge of the fabric, and for reliability you can use the zigzag sewing method.
  4. Next, the other marked sides are connected and stitched in a similar way.
  5. After this, everything is connected in such a way as to form a bag and sewn together. Then the cover must be turned right side out.
  6. The cover is stuffed with polystyrene, but loosely, so that the pillow can take the shape of the person who sits on it.
  7. The final touch is to sew the bag closed using a hidden zip tie. To learn how to make a bean bag chair, watch this video:

Such floor pillows are easy to make with sewing and cutting skills, and the work does not take much time. In addition, the end result will bring a lot of pleasure and positive emotions, as well as saving money.
