If you decide to radically change the appearance of your kitchen, but are very limited in funds, then as an option you can simply replace the kitchen facades. To help you with this process, we will highlight the most popular façade materials and provide details on their installation.
Replacing the kitchen facade is one of the most interesting ways to change the interior
Replacement of facades - review of materials
Replacing kitchen facades will solve the problem of buying a new set - with the help of a new finish you will change the appearance of your kitchen without any problems. This process can be a very budget-friendly way to change a boring interior.
Replacing facades in the kitchen can occur due to damage to the old material, loss of its original appearance, or simply from the desire to change the decor
In general, the replacement of kitchen facades and countertops occurs for various reasons: intensive use, worn surfaces, damage to the kitchen set by active children, multiple traces of steam and splashes, peeling of the plastic base, etc. But in most cases, people are simply driven by a thirst for change. Replacing your kitchen facade can save you from unnecessary costs and turn your kitchen space into a work of art.
The cost of replacing facades is several times lower than a complete change of furniture
In this section, we will take a closer look at the types of facades that you can install with your own hands, and also tell you about the features of caring for each of them.
Chipboard
Coverings made from this material are a budget option. This is a rather capricious material made from wood chips and resins. The environmentally friendly base is considered wear-resistant - according to experts, such a facade, if properly used, can last quite a long time.
Due to the shine of laminated chipboard, the kitchen will visually appear larger
But when purchasing material, you should be wary of unnecessary risks and encounter low-quality products - literally in a year the chipboard may swell or begin to crumble, the protective film may peel off and peel off.
Chipboard is the most budget option for kitchen finishing
Advantages : Relatively low price and a wide range of colors make chipboard facades a desirable purchase. In addition, the material is malleable in processing and resistant to mechanical stress.
Care features : Unpretentious in terms of cleaning. You can use a regular damp sponge and non-aggressive detergents.
Chipboard is an unpretentious material, so caring for it will not be difficult
MDF
MDF facades, in comparison with the same chipboard, can regularly serve as a decoration for a kitchen for 6-7 years (see also the article Kitchen facades made of MDF - let's add some variety). Due to its artificial origin, the material is much lighter than wood and several times cheaper. Such facades hold fasteners much more reliably and do not deform under the influence of various factors (elevated temperatures, mechanical stress, moisture, sunlight).
MDF boards are not afraid of moisture and high temperatures
Advantages : Fungi and microorganisms do not multiply in MDF facades, they are not exposed to high temperatures and high humidity. In general, such designs are ideal for the kitchen - lined with enamel and melanin, they are easy to clean and wash.
Care features : Regular wet cleaning using non-aggressive means will be enough to prevent MDF boards from losing their original appearance.
MDF is lighter and cheaper than solid wood facades, but looks no less impressive
With metal edge
Aluminum profiles have also proven themselves well in furniture production. Aluminum is excellent for creating display cases and furniture elements (in combination with MDF, chipboard and glass).
Metal edge extends the life of the headset
Advantages : Due to the aluminum frame, the structure is highly durable and can last for many years. It does not deform over time and perfectly keeps the hinges in their original condition for decades.
Care features : Aluminum edges can be washed with a sponge and detergent that does not contain abrasive particles.
To clean aluminum edges, you should choose detergents that do not contain abrasive particles.
Glass
Glass facades (or inserts), as a rule, are decorated with all sorts of designs and beautiful patterns (see also the article Glass facades for the kitchen: a combination of external fragility with reliability). Shaded, corrugated and painted, they give cabinetry an unrivaled appearance and will turn even ugly, square cabinets into attractive furniture.
Glass inserts add sophistication to the interior
Advantages : This option is not afraid of greasy drops and steam, and it is not afraid of chemical influences. If you have children, you can order an alternative option - plexiglass. Plexiglas easily withstands mechanical damage and has significantly less weight than natural glass.
Care features : Glass surfaces are washed with cleaning agents that do not leave streaks, and then wiped dry with a dry cloth.
To prevent streaks on the glass, wipe it with a dry cloth.

Installation of facades in 4 steps
If you have a ready-made frame, changing the kitchen facades with your own hands will not be difficult. Before starting work you will need:
- Decide on color . Choose the shade of the new coating, taking into account the overall interior of the kitchen and the size of the room. The smaller the area of the room, the lighter the tone of the furniture should be.
A set with bright colors will look good in spacious rooms
- Take measurements . You don’t need to do any special calculations; you just need to accurately measure the dimensions of the old facades that fit perfectly with the frame of the headset.
- Order materials . With this point everything is very clear. Order ready-made slabs from the selected material from furniture makers.
In addition to the facades, you can replace the countertop - the kitchen will only benefit from this
- Prepare your tools . To update the headset, you should have a screwdriver, screwdriver, drills, tape measure, and a set of accessories on hand.
You can replace facades in just a day, but you will enjoy the resulting effect for years
When everything you need is at hand, you can begin installation.

Step 1: Drill holes for hinges . Mark with a pen or pencil the locations for future fastenings. Use a Forstner drill to make the holes. If you do not have the required drill, you should agree in advance with the facade manufacturer to create the appropriate holes.
Step 2. Fasten the loops . Using a screwdriver, attach a special tab to the wall of the headset case (it comes complete with hinges).
Step 3. Secure the handles . Make marks in the center of the facade and make holes along them, then fasten the handles.
Step 4: Adjust Elements . Using a screwdriver, tighten the fasteners on the foot, aligning the structure at the desired angle. |
In my article “Sliding wardrobe (Budget option)” I described the design, design and manufacturing features of perhaps the simplest and most inexpensive version of a sliding wardrobe. There I also wrote about the advantages of this type of furniture (see Fig. 1) and its disadvantages. The advantages include the low cost of this cabinet option, simplicity of design and quite good appearance, which can always be embellished with overhead mirrors and decorative elements. And at the same time, the appearance of this cabinet does not begin to irritate over time with the abundance of bright colors, which are often used in facades using handles and guides from such famous companies as Komandor, Sevroll, Grossman, etc. In addition, the design of the sliding wardrobe (budget option) allows you to save useful space both in the room and in the wardrobe itself by reducing the required volume for the sliding system. As for the disadvantages of this furniture option, they include the need to perform milling work to install the guides (see the above article) and, most importantly, the insufficient reliability of the lower rollers (see Fig. 2). Experience in operating furniture with such sliding systems shows that the lower rollers have to be changed every 3 to 4 years, and sometimes more often. But, if you are reluctant to do this, and you are not satisfied with the smooth movement of sliding facades, then you can always replace the lower guides and rollers with those used in the Laguna sliding system.
Work order
The appearance of the Laguna guide system is shown in Fig. 3. To illustrate the process of modernizing a wardrobe (budget option), Fig. 3 shows both the old guides and one new guide from the Laguna sliding system.
The upgrade algorithm looks like this:
- Dismantle the facades of the wardrobe (budget option).
- In the wardrobe (budget option), the old lower metal guides are dismantled (see Fig. 3).
- New guides are installed (see Fig. 3), which are attached to the bottom of the cabinet with screws.
- Old-style plastic guides are installed into the existing milled grooves, which simply perform a decorative function and cover the existing grooves. Those who made furniture according to the calculations and recommendations laid out in the article “Sliding wardrobe (Budget option)” remember that metal guides were used as the lower guides of the sliding wardrobe. In order not to additionally buy old-style plastic guides, you can use those that were used as guides for the upper rollers, and in their place install metal guides (those that were at the bottom of the wardrobe). Such a replacement is necessary to prevent the facades from sticking, because old metal guides have slightly larger geometric dimensions than plastic ones, and mechanical adjustment of their dimensions is much more labor-intensive than plastic ones. The appearance of the installed new guides from the “Laguna” system is shown in Fig. 4. There, for clarity, one groove is covered with an old plastic guide.
- Remove the plastic lower rollers from the facades of the wardrobe (budget option) (see Fig. 2), and in their place install the metal-plastic lower rollers of the Laguna sliding system (see Fig. 5).
- Reinstall the wardrobe facades (budget option) and adjust the height of the lower rollers to a position that ensures free horizontal movement of the facades.
Features of the proposed modernization
The proposed modernization of the wardrobe (budget option) has a number of positive aspects. Firstly, there is no need to change the size of the facades and other elements of the wardrobe (budget option). Secondly, due to the fact that only the lower guides and rollers are changed, the cost of purchasing additional accessories is minimal (about $15 for two guides and 6 rollers). And thirdly, the labor costs for replacing the lower guides and rollers are minimal (about 1 - 1.5 man-hours), but after that you will forever forget about jamming of the facades of the sliding system.
It should be noted that replacing the upper plastic rollers of the wardrobe, as well as the lower and upper plastic rollers of the mezzanine, and, accordingly, the guides for them, is not required, because These rollers and guides practically do not wear out due to low vertical mechanical loads. Due to this, significant savings are achieved on the purchase of accessories, and the necessary labor costs for upgrading the wardrobe (budget option) are reduced.
Do not forget that such a modernization can be carried out on standard hallway sets, which are often sold in furniture stores, and which use plastic upper and lower rollers (Fig. 2).
And finally, if you decide to design and manufacture the furniture described in the article “Sliding wardrobe (Budget option)”, you can make the changes suggested above to the cabinet design at the design stage. But at the same time, I recommend reducing the height of the facades by 2 mm, which will simplify the process of adjusting them at the assembly stage. In addition, you will reduce the cost of milling work.
