Pattern of a cover for a chair for feeding a child. How to sew a cover for a high chair

What is a high chair cover?

A high chair cover is a necessary item for daily use by mother and child. The cover is an optional accessory and must be purchased in addition to the high chair.

From the moment the baby begins to sit independently, it is necessary to purchase a soft cover for the high chair. The case has an outer and an inner side; with the help of additional ties, the product is attached to the high chair.

The cover is made of waterproof film, soft fillers and other materials with high absorption properties. Often the cover has additional pockets and seat belts.

Cutting and sewing

When the cover pattern is ready, you can start cutting the product. First, you should cut out the lining and pockets, for which you use stiff cotton or synthetic fabric. With the help of pockets, the cover will be placed on the back and armrests of the high chair. To make pockets, cut out 3 parts according to the pattern: the upper part of the back of the cover and 2 sides. When cutting, do not forget to allow a seam allowance of about 1 cm from the contour of the pattern.

When the details of the pockets are ready, their lower part, with which they will be put on the high chair, should be folded 1 cm and stitched. After this, the pockets should be placed on the front side of the lining fabric with the stitch down and sewn to it using a sewing machine.

Then the lining with the right side of the fabric is applied to the well-ironed and evenly laid out material from which the outer part of the cover will be made. Two layers of material should be pinned and basted. Only after this can you cut out the part from soft fabric. Such actions will avoid distortion of the fabric and, accordingly, the entire product as a whole.

Next, the resulting design is applied to the padding polyester layer with the wrong side of the lining, secured with pins, basted and cut out. Then all the parts fastened together are stitched around the perimeter on a sewing machine. At the bottom of the future product, you must leave a hole large enough to turn the cover right side out.

The previously made basting is removed from the stitched parts, then the product is turned inside out so that the padding polyester layer remains inside, between the layers of the lining and the facing material. The resulting structure should be laid on a table or floor and a pattern should be laid out on it, on the basis of which stitch markings are applied to the material with chalk. All marked stitch lines are first basted and then stitched on a sewing machine.

What is a highchair cover used for?

A high chair cover is a useful, irreplaceable thing for mother and child. A child needs a high chair for two reasons:

  1. Feeding a baby is a rather difficult process, during which the child gets dirty himself and smears surrounding objects. In order to minimize cleaning time, it is recommended to use a high chair. Depending on the type of fabric, the cover can be easily washed or washed.
  2. The high chair is very difficult to use without a cover. The baby will feel uncomfortable and move out. The cover provides additional protection for the baby and protects the child from bumps and bruises.

This is important: the cover is a convenient modern invention that greatly simplifies the life of mother and baby!

DIY chair cover with backrest - patterns plus imagination

Decorating chairs using covers is not an invention of today. This is the most affordable way to make your home cozy or decorate a party room in a unified style, without buying new furniture.

Any woman who knows how to hold a needle and thread in her hands and knows how to sew on a sewing machine can make a cover for a chair with a backrest (patterns). It is enough to have at your disposal a sufficient amount of fabric, finishing materials and desire. In addition, you need to have an idea of how to take measurements from chairs and what the details of the patterns from which the covers will be sewn will look like.

Universal case

This cover will look like a chair cover with a flared frill. That is, the shape under the seat will be false. This case has no flounces or frills. They will look superfluous with this shape.

The advantage of this type of pattern is that you can assemble chairs of different shapes for a large number of guests. Then the formal table will look in the same style.

It will also come in handy if the house has strong but shabby chairs that require restoration. And you can change the decor in the house just by changing the covers on the chairs, curtains and tablecloths, if the interior style of the house allows it.

Case with frill based on universal

If you want a chair cover with a gathered frill, then instead of the side parts and wedges under the letter F, take a strip of fabric, the length of which depends on how voluminous you need the lower part.

  • height 55+ 55 +110 cm,
  • width 45-48 cm.
  • chair width - 45-48 cm,
  • length - 45 cm.

Volanchik:

  • height - 44 cm,
  • length 210-250 cm (length is the degree of assembly of the finishing shuttlecock).

Don't forget to attach strings to the corners of the seat. This is necessary to securely tie the cover to the legs.

All other decorative elements in the form of ties, bows or clasps can be made based on the basic pattern.

Cover for office chair with oval back

Familiar and completely uninteresting chairs for offices can, if necessary, be made elegant and formal. The office chair pattern will have a slightly different shape and will have four pieces, including a bank tie strip.

Corporate celebrations do not necessarily have to look like tables pushed together and chairs collected in all offices. Tablecloths and cute covers will make the atmosphere appropriately festive. The labor of sewing covers for office chairs will pay off with a general high spirits.

We take measurements and make a pattern

All other decorative elements in the form of ties, bows or clasps can be made based on the basic pattern.

As an option

An office chair on wheels can be decorated and will become the highlight of a room that has a table for a laptop or computer. In small apartments it is not always possible to arrange a separate office. And then a strict office chair and a desk for a computer look dissonant in the sweet comfort of the bedroom.

If the bedroom is in country style, Provence or a similar cozy interior style, then work furniture and devices look alien in it. The impression can be softened by decorating a chair on wheels in the same style as the rest of the textiles in the room.

Pattern of a cover for a rustic chair

This pattern is suitable for any chair with a flat, straight back. On its basis you can sew any exquisite case. If desired, you can add more elements and make it very elegant or vintage.

And the covers can also have different modifications, but you should remember that excesses will look loud and tasteless. here the main feature is the elegant shape of the back, which in itself is already a decorative element.

Any very boring interior can not only be ennobled with the help of covers for chairs, armchairs and sofas, but also you can diversify the appearance of the room as often as you want to change.

Or design it in accordance with the theme of the event. For example, a wedding in a daisy style, a vintage or rustic themed celebration, any idea of the organizers can be decorated with taste and ingenuity using the appropriate type of chair covers.

How to choose the right case? What should you pay special attention to?

In order to make a good purchase, you need to pay attention to the fabric from which the product is made, the type of filler, color, availability of additional accessories, etc.

  1. Material. Give preference to natural materials. It is best if the front part of the product is made of cotton, the inner part is made of polyester. Recently, they began to produce oilcloth covers that can be easily washed and washed. If you use this type of cover, you need to place a piece of natural fabric on top.
  2. Filler material. Manufacturers use foam rubber and synthetic padding for the inner lining of the case. Choose covers with synthetic padding; this material is more practical, it holds its shape better and does not wrinkle after washing.
  3. Product color. For young children, it is preferable to choose bedding shades - beige, light green, pale pink. For older children, you can buy a cover with bright and colorful drawings that develop the child’s fine motor skills, imagination and attention.
  4. Additional functions. Covers must have seat belts; give preference to “five-point” belts that secure your child’s shoulders, arms, legs and belt.

Grand total:

  • The cover must be made from environmentally friendly materials.
  • The cover must be protected in the form of a five-point seat belt.
  • Choose soothing colors for young children.

Otherwise, there are no clear guidelines when it comes to choosing a cover for a high chair. Choose a case based on your own preferences.

DIY chair covers

There is nothing difficult about sewing chair covers yourself. This is a great way to use up your fabric stash and give your kitchen a new look.

Fabric pattern

The initial stage of sewing covers, after deciding on the model and fabric, is to make a pattern. Its configuration completely depends on the model of the selected case. To carry out the process, it is necessary to use a material that can take shape well, cover the chair and secure it all with tailor's pins in the right places. At this stage, the shape, length, and presence of a fastener on the future case are immediately highlighted.

DIY chair covers

Measurements are taken using tracing paper. For this:

  1. The paper is applied to the seat, fixed with needles and traced strictly along the contour.
  2. Add 1.5 cm on each side to the seams and cut out.
  3. Do the same with the back of the chair.
  4. If a skirt with a cover is needed, then measure the length of the legs and the width of the front of the chair. On a sheet of tracing paper, draw a rectangle of the required size, adding 5 cm from the bottom, 10 cm from the sides and 1.5 cm from the top.
  5. Similarly, the sides of the skirt are cut out in duplicate.
  6. Measure the back by applying tracing paper to its outer edge and mark the outer edges. Draw lines on paper along the back legs to the floor, add 5 cm to the dimensions at the bottom and 1.5 cm for the allowance. In the lower and upper parts of the resulting pattern, mark the centers and cut it in half.

This is a standard method for making a pattern that is suitable for making covers with a back and a skirt. It is worth remembering that the simpler the product, the fewer elements you will have to cut out for it.

How to sew a cover for a chair with a back

To give the dining area a luxurious appearance, it is decorated with chair covers with a back and a fold at the back. This option is popular among housewives, so let’s look at how to sew it step by step:

DIY chair covers

  1. Transfer the pattern onto the fabric using tailor's chalk or a piece of soap. Cutting out elements.
  2. Stitching the side seams of the back.
  3. Turning and trimming of the lower and side sections of the back part. This stage also involves sewing a zipper into the fold, if this was planned earlier.
  4. Stitching the top edge of the chair back.
  5. Sewing together all parts of the skirt, turning up its bottom edge and stitching it.
  6. Seam the seat and the top edge of the skirt together.
  7. Connection between the back and other parts.
  8. Overlaying of internal sections. If this is not possible, then you can simply process them manually with an overlock seam.
  9. Adding decorative buttons and loops to the fold if a zipper has not been sewn in previously.

DIY chair covers

This is how you can easily sew original chair covers. At the same time, you can use various combinations of fabrics and designs, which will help the product become individual.

How to sew a universal chair cover

No less popular are chair covers that cover only the seat without affecting the back. They can be of any design that the craftswoman will like and will fit the overall concept of the kitchen. This cover model is suitable not only for a regular chair, but also for a stool and even a bar stool. Even someone who does not have sufficient experience and has never been involved in such a process can sew such a cover.

DIY chair covers

Here are several options for how to sew such products for chairs:

The easiest way is to make a pillow from two halves of fabric. To do this, according to the shape of the seat, a seat pattern is made on tracing paper in two copies as described in the previous case. Don't forget to add 1.5 cm for allowances. After this, parts are cut out from the fabric, and padding polyester is cut out using the same shape. The fabric components are sewn together, a thin layer of synthetic padding is placed inside and finally stitched or completed with a zipper. It is best to make a diamond-shaped stitch on the surface. The edges of the cover can be decorated with a skirt or trim. At the corners, ties made of the selected material are attached to it.

DIY chair covers

For those who knit, a yarn cover will be an easy option. It is best to choose bright and thick yarn to make the product voluminous.

DIY chair covers

The cover, sewn from many small pads of different colors and textures, looks interesting. Such a riot of colors will add originality, for example, to a kitchen in the shabby chic style.

DIY chair covers

Cover for high chair

Often young mothers are faced with a situation where the cover on the high chair is damaged and can no longer be used or is not there at all. In this case, you can make this product yourself. Sewing a cover for a high chair with your own hands also becomes important when you need a replacement option while the first one is being washed.

DIY chair covers

There is no universal pattern for sewing such a product, since high chairs vary in configuration and size, so you should always rely on the design of specific furniture.

For a children's high chair, it is necessary to sew a removable type model, since it will have to be removed quite often for cleaning. Such a product usually consists of several layers:

  • the top one is fabric or oilcloth that will not allow water to pass through;
  • intermediate - filling made of padding polyester, foam rubber or other material;
  • bottom (lining) - hard fabric, for example, linen or cotton synthetics, the use of lining is allowed.

The easiest way is to sew a cover for a highchair similar to an existing standard one. To do this you need:

  1. Lay out the existing cover on a flat surface and cut out similar elements on the new fabric, marking the places of folds and joints.

    DIY chair covers

  2. Cut out the lining and cuffs, baste a pocket for putting on the back from the lining fabric.
  3. We baste the resulting structure to the base material and cut it out in this position. You can cut everything out first and then sew it, but there will definitely be some errors.
  4. Baste the joined lining and base material to the filling and cut.

    DIY chair covers

  5. After all the elements have been cut out and basted, sew the cover on all sides. One of them is left for turning the product inside out.
  6. Unscrew the finished cover and use the pattern to determine the stitching locations, which will subsequently be done on a machine.

    DIY chair covers

  7. Sew the opening for turning inside out with a hidden seam, and add an elastic band or ties to the bottom of the cover to secure it to the chair.

DIY chair covers

Thus, if you follow the technology, you can even sew a cover for a children's high chair, which will ideally complement the seat for the baby.

It also happens that there was no cover on the chair initially, for example, the chair was made independently or received from relatives or friends.

DIY chair covers

The difference in creating such a product is that the pattern will have to be made directly from the chair, and not from a finished likeness. To do this, a white cloth or tracing paper is placed on the chair, onto which the outlines of the back and seat are transferred. The pattern should also contain the desired places for stitching, but if they are not there, then you can leave it as is. Further actions are repeated in the same way as described earlier.

Sometimes a filler that holds its shape well can be used. This will avoid adding a pocket to the cover that fits over the back of the chair. This model will be the optimal complement for a wooden high chair.

DIY high chair cover

Very often, covers are made of low-quality material that can irritate the child’s skin. In this case, it is recommended to sew or knit the cover for the high chair yourself. The pattern can be found on the Internet or prepared according to specified parameters.

In order for the product to be strong and durable, it is recommended to sew it from three types of fabric - hard fabric for the first layer, padding polyester as a soft layer, cotton or cambric fabric for the outer part.

Required materials and their quantities:

  • fabrics – thick cotton, light cotton, padding polyester. Each piece of fabric should be 1 meter long, standard width;
  • threads by color;
  • pattern;
  • scissors;
  • tailor's chalk;
  • needle;
  • Flyserin.

In order to prepare the pattern correctly, you can remove the pattern from the old cover. It is recommended to sew a cover with pockets and straps that protect the baby from falls.

How to sew a chair cover with your own hands step by step

Good day, my dear readers))). Today I will share with you an unusual experience, since the master class will be on the topic: how to sew chair covers yourself , in other words, simply decorate them. What is this for, you ask? Indeed, this question will probably arise for many, since not every person will be faced with the need to have beautiful chairs made from ugly ones.

In my case, an old and tattered Soviet chair that had been lying in the attic for many years will be turned into a chic chair that will add a certain charm to any interior.

You can find a huge number of ideas on the Internet, but for my chairs I chose this photo, only I needed to cover the legs of the chair completely.

For one chair I needed:

  • 2 meters of any fabric with a width of 150 cm (it is advisable to take thick fabric - jacquard, suit, etc.)
  • padding polyester 200 - 1 meter

How to take measurements for a chair cover?

Before you start cutting, of course, you need to take measurements from the chair.

What parts will we measure?

  1. height (b, see in the figure below) and width (a) of the back of the chair
  2. width (h) and depth (d) of the chair seat
  3. height of legs (in) from the desired length of the cover to the seat

The case will ultimately consist of three parts:

  • The back (part 1, see the figure below) is curved on both sides, the part consists of three parts (two layers of fabric, and in the middle there is a layer of padding polyester), and is tied with ties for beauty and fixation.
  • The seat part (part 2, see the figure below) also consists of three parts (two parts made of fabric and a padding polyester in the middle).
  • A ruffle is sewn to the seat piece around the entire perimeter (detail 3, see in the figure below). For me, this ruffle completely covers the legs of the chair; if desired, it can be made shorter.

You measure your chair, for me almost all sides were approximately 50 cm (plus or minus a few cm, the seat of the chair may also not have a square shape, take this into account when measuring), so I purposely do not write down my measurements, but conditionally. It just seems to me that all standard model chairs (especially old Soviet ones) have approximately the same dimensions (I’m not currently considering small chairs or stools, or designer ones - I hardly want to sew a cover on them!!))).

Layout of the cover parts on the fabric:

The parts are laid out very conveniently, and there is not even a residue left:

  • 1 - part for the back, cut out so that the grain of the fabric goes from top to bottom, as in the picture, you need 2 such parts, but I forgot to diagram the second part, so keep in mind that the second part of the back is placed under two parts No. 2 (in the picture . there is free space), but at the same time it is cut not along the lobar, but sideways, and this part will be internal to the back part.
  • 2 — part for the seat, 2 pcs.
  • 3 - ruffles, my legs are 40 cm high, the ruffle height is 43 cm, taking into account allowances and hems at the bottom. The seat of the chair has a perimeter of 200 cm, so that the ruffle looks beautiful (so that there is a “wave”, like on curtains), you need to take fabric no less than 1.5 times more. I took 300 cm for the ruffles; I will need to lay them in folds around the perimeter of the seat. We sew the ruffle detail into one of two strips to make a length of 300 cm.
  • 3a - this detail is conditional, I just cut off a square, I will sew it separately on the back of the seat.

How to sew a chair cover with your own hands?

After you have created a pattern for the cover, you can begin the sewing process itself.

Cut out the back part from padding polyester:

Cut out the seat part from padding polyester:

From the main fabric we cut out two seat parts:

From the main fabric we cut out two back pieces:

We sew two parts of the seat with padding polyester, first fold them face to face, put padding polyester on the wrong side, then sew them together and turn them inside out. We also sew the remaining side, bending the seam allowances inwards, this seam will be visible on the front side, but will not be noticeable on the cover itself, since it is located near the back and will be covered by the back part.

We do the same with the backrest part of the chair (the same principle), sew the padding polyester inside and turn it inside out, stitching the open side.

You will get this beautiful detail:

Cut out two strips for the ruffle:

I cut a square from one of the strips so that I could then sew it onto the back of the seat piece.

On this cut square we process the sides and bottom with a double hem and sew the seat parts to the back side, leaving 4 cm on the sides.

I will also need to cut out the laces to tie the cover on the back and seat parts at the back of the chair.

The lace will be 40 cm long, so we cut out strips 42 cm long and 4 cm wide; the finished lace will be 1 cm wide.

You will need 6 pieces of such laces, 2 pieces for the seat and 4 pieces for the back of the chair.

We sew the finished laces on the sides of the seat part from the rear legs of the chair:

Then we sew both strips for the ruffle into one piece, iron the seam, finish the side seams and the bottom of the ruffle with a double hem and evenly sew it to the seat part, while the ruffle goes to the required length on the lace, so the chair legs will not be visible. I laid one-sided folds on the ruffle.

At the end, process all the cuts on the cover with an overlock or zig-zag stitch so that the fabric does not fray.

We also sew laces onto the back part, stepping back from the edge 10 cm (so we sew a lace on each of the four sides).

This is such a beautiful chair cover:

And there was this scary chair......

So it turned out quite beautiful, considering the original appearance of the furniture))).

Don't be afraid to experiment and come up with new things and sew with me! See you soon on the blog pages, good luck to you!

How to do tailoring?

  1. We apply three layers of fabric with the wrong sides facing each other.
  2. Carefully make a basting, and then machine stitch along three sides along the edge.
  3. We turn the product right side out, fold the unhemmed edges inward, and machine stitch it.
  4. We remove the basting and, if necessary, sew on pockets and seat belts.

The cover for the baby's high chair is ready. In order to make products it will take from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the primary skills and abilities.
