The Egg Chair, created by Arne Jacobsen, is called a style icon and a timeless masterpiece. The famous Danish designer and architect designed it in 1958 for the lobby of the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. The unusual egg chair fit well into the interior and became a bright touch that was impossible not to pay attention to. After some time, the Fritz Hansen company, which produces the Egg Chair, received a flood of orders. Hotels, offices, fashion boutiques, private homeowners - everyone wanted a stylish and comfortable chair.
An egg-shaped chair could be seen not only in expensive offices and boutiques, but also on TV screens. The Egg Chair appears alternately in two cult films about space exploration - Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris and Stanley Kubrick's A Space Odyssey. The egg chair simply had no chance of being forgotten.

How the Egg Chair was created
Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen spent a long time searching for the shape of the future egg chair. He dreamed of creating something new and revolutionary, but at the same time stylish and comfortable. According to one version, the source of inspiration for the search for the form was the famous “Womb Chair” by Eero Saarinen. The hugging frame of the egg chair has something in common with this model.

But Jacobsen wanted to make a splash and at the same time feared accusations of plagiarism, so he continued his experiments.
Egg chair
Many people, when starting to decorate their home, often wonder how to create a unique, modern, stylish interior and not spend a lot of money on it? Nothing complicated. There is a completely acceptable and very original solution - buy an egg chair.
Chair in the shape of an egg
An egg-shaped chair is a thing from the “new – well forgotten old” category. Back in the middle of the last century, a hanging chair in the shape of a truncated egg was presented to consumers by a Danish designer (a woman, by the way). Initially, such chairs were suspended from a tree or ceiling, and a little later portable models appeared on a special stand. Modern types of egg chairs can be divided into several types, depending on the type of fastening and installation - hanging (swing), portable, fixed (rigidly fixed to the ceiling and floor), as well as by the type of material used to make the cocoon itself - wicker, plastic or fabric . Let's take a closer look at some types of these original chairs. We will also provide some recommendations for placing an egg chair in the interior.
Egg chair in a modern interior
A classic option is a hanging wicker egg chair. The material for its manufacture can be wicker, bamboo fibers, raffia (fibers from the leaves of a certain type of palm tree), rattan (natural and artificial). A wicker egg chair will fit harmoniously into a country or Provence style interior. Also, such chairs will decorate a country veranda, and a wicker egg chair made of artificial rattan can be installed even on the lawn in front of the house without any fear. The fact is that artificial rattan is not afraid of changes in temperature and moisture, that is, it will not collapse or rot after being exposed to heavy rain, snow or the rays of the scorching sun. You will only need to remove the soft parts of the chair (cushions) in a timely manner.
Moreover, such chairs can be either suspended or made on a special stable basis. In this case, the egg chair can, for example, be used as a comfortable chaise lounge for sunbathing or air bathing. Another possible use for a hanging egg chair is to use it as a crib for a baby, especially if it is made from natural materials.
In modern interiors, an egg chair made from more modern materials will look more natural. For example, a special mood of fusion style will be emphasized by an egg-shaped chair made of plastic. The same plastic chair without unnecessary decorative elements will look good in the kitchen interior - a stylish detail, and also not difficult to care for.
Textile versions of the egg chair (the “cocoon itself is made of fabric, and the base must be made of durable materials - wood, plastic, metal) can be used as a chaise lounge (portable model) or even as a children’s swing (hanging version). Egg-shaped chairs made entirely of metal also appeared on sale. As a rule, these are portable models consisting of a strong and stable base frame and its own cocoon, made by weaving from thin wire. To ensure that you can sit in such a chair with maximum comfort, manufacturers equip such chairs with insert pillows in bright covers.
In conclusion, it should be said that egg-shaped chairs can have a variety of sizes - from small, for a comfortable position for one person; to significant - they can be used as a fairly spacious sleeping place. In the latter case, you should definitely pay attention to the reliability of the fastening or base.
Textile chair
Often textile options are used as sun loungers or a children's swing. The first are portable models, the second are hanging. What design are we talking about when we talk about a textile chair? This refers to an egg-shaped model whose cocoon is made of fabric. The base of such a chair is made of wood, plastic or metal.
Now there are convenient options on sale that are entirely made of solid materials. They are often a portable model consisting of a durable frame and a cocoon woven from wire. To increase ease of use, manufacturers suggest using pillows in bright light covers.
Wicker chair Egg
The wicker egg chair is considered classic. As a rule, it is made from wicker, bamboo, raffia or rattan. The latter is used both artificial and natural. A wicker chair will fit perfectly into rooms decorated in country or Provence style. It can also be placed on the veranda. On the lawn near the house, designers allow the installation of an Egg chair made of rattan (artificial). There is no need to worry that the furniture will get damaged. The material from which it is made is not afraid of even the heaviest rains, sunlight and sudden temperature changes. The main thing is to remove all soft parts of the chair in a timely manner. We're talking about pillows.
A wicker chair can be either hanging or regular with a stable base. In summer, designers suggest using it as a chaise lounge. It will also be useful for young mothers. In such a chair you can lull a baby, that is, it can be used as a crib. But then it is better to purchase a wicker designer Egg chair made from natural materials.
Chair for the garden
A chair for a summer house is no different from the “room” options. The main thing is that it is made of rattan. And, in this case, artificial. As already described, this material easily withstands all weather surprises. However, for the winter it is still better to bring it into a room where there is no dampness or draft. Otherwise, the owner risks saying goodbye to his egg chair.
Exclusive options
You can create unusual options, such as a hanging ball chair, which has a relatively small hole and a deep interior. As an option - an egg chair on a reliable spring leg. It is easy to move such furniture to another place, take it out onto the balcony or into the garden.
Wicker hanging chairs
It is not at all necessary to purchase a ready-made hanging chair from the ceiling. It is enough to carry out an inspection in the barn, pantry, and using the tips, make a wicker hanging chair with your own hands. If you don’t find anything suitable, then it’s easy to purchase materials in a store and apply skill and dexterity.
The heads of families will cope with the frame or making the base of the chair, and women will remember the skills of needlework: knitting, weaving, macrame, sewing. Children are also able to create certain details. And the whole family will unite to make a hanging chair with their own hands - the master class, which we provide below, will help you create reliable and comfortable furniture.
Hanging chair made of hoops
To make a wicker chair, you need to have basic knowledge of macrame techniques and purchase the necessary materials:
- slings – 12 meters;
- metal hoops: with a diameter of about 70 cm - 1 piece (for the seat), with a diameter of 100-110 cm - 1 piece (for the back);
- rope or cord for weaving - 800-900 meters;
- 2 wooden rods;
- cords for connecting rings - 2 pieces;
- tape measure, scissors.
If you couldn’t buy suitable hoops in the store, you can take metal-plastic pipes, which are used for installing water pipes. They have a dense metal braid inside and can withstand a lot of weight.
Advice! The length of the pipe is calculated by the formula: S = Dx3.14 (D is the diameter of the future hoop). The pipes are connected using a wooden insert and two small screws.
Construction stores sell polyamide cords with a diameter of 4 mm (with a polypropylene core). They are easier to weave and assemble into a reliable structure.
Decorating hoops
First of all, it is necessary to completely wrap the finished hoops; to strengthen the winding, after 20-25 turns it is necessary to make a tightening and a knot. The result is a uniform braid without gaps. In this work, pre-purchased work thread gloves become indispensable. With their help, your hands are protected from calluses.
Frame mesh
To weave the mesh, choose any pattern that is created using the macrame technique. But even a beginner can handle the checkerboard pattern. The weaving pattern is simple: cords folded in half are fastened on one side, and they become the threads from which the weave is created. You need to tie both hoops.
Important! It is necessary to monitor the tension of the threads and the rigidity of the knots to ensure a neat weave. In addition, the elasticity of the structure depends on this.
Construction connection
Ready-made elements are combined into a single structure. If the aesthetic appearance depends on the previous option, then reliability depends on the assembly. Subsequence:
- One edge is joined and wrapped together with one cord. Preferably with knots. This way the hoops won't move;
- Wooden support rods are taken (the length is chosen as desired). They are also wrapped with cord. Notches are made at the ends of the rods to prevent slipping;
- The back is being woven. Start from the top. The pattern chosen is the same as the seat or more decorative;
- The ends of the threads are tied to the seat. They can be left, trimmed, making them the same length to create a nice fringe.
- The basis of the structure is ready;
- The next stage: the slings are attached. A ring or chain is attached to the slings, which will help hang the structure in the required place.
The last stage is very important, since the reliable fastening of the hanging chair to the tree, ceiling or crossbar depends on it.
Alternative option
If for some reason it is difficult to create a weave, then there is another possibility. You can make production easier by using thick fabric instead of macrame. For the case you will need:
- 3 meters of fabric 1.5 meters wide;
- metal buckles;
- doublerin;
- trouser braid.
The frame is made as in the previous version, but instead of creating a woven pattern, fabric is used. It is cut into 2 identical squares, which, in turn, are folded 4 times. A circle with a radius of approximately 65 cm is cut out. An outline is outlined in chalk at an indentation of 4 cm.
On the first circle, holes for slings are marked at an angle of 45 and 30 degrees. They are cut and carefully ironed so that the holes are similar. The first piece of fabric is laid on the second, and markings are made. Slots are cut around the circumference with jagged teeth, thanks to which the finished covers will turn out neat. Both parts are sewn together (it is necessary to leave a hole for the hoop), turned right side out and ironed.
The covers are stuffed with padding polyester and placed on the structure. The sling is cut into pieces no less than 2 meters long (the ends are melted). In the spaces intended for slings, they are pulled through and secured with a special clamp. Thus, you can adjust the height and angle of inclination of the structure. The slings are connected at the top and attached to a large carabiner, a metal ring, so that the hanging structures are secure.
Cocoon chair: features of creation
A distinctive feature can be considered the resemblance to a spider cocoon. Don't think that this is something repulsive. This design is quite attractive, with a twisted pattern. Depending on your own preferences and the overall color scheme of the room, you can choose a rope for weaving of a certain color, thereby decorating the interior.
How to make a hanging chair so that it is reliable and stylish? The manufacturing technology is simple:
- Use 2-3 main hoops, equal in size. To get the shape of a ball, they are connected to each other. To maintain the desired shape, additional half rings are installed;
- For convenience, a large pillow made of dense foam rubber is placed inside (at your request). As an option, you can use a board cut to size, covered with foam rubber or thick fabric. It is advisable to have removable pillowcases to make washing easier. In addition, you can change their color and texture at your discretion;
- The structure is braided with rope or a finished mesh. Thus, it is impossible to fall out of the structure;
- A chain or secure loop is attached to the cocoon.
Plastic chair
If the living space is decorated in an innovative style, then it is better to give preference to a chair created from modern components. An excellent option would be plastic furniture. It will fit into a fusion style interior. If you buy a chair without any special design flourishes, you can install it in the kitchen. This interior detail is quite stylish and easy to care for.
How to choose a chair?
Before purchasing an egg chair, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations offered by professional designers.
- Furniture should not only be beautiful, but also comfortable, so you need to test a potential option in the store.
- The hanging structure must be placed in such a way that it does not interfere with movement around the room. It is especially necessary to take into account the height of the room and the maximum height of the occupants.
- You need to pay attention to whether the Egg chair is original. Although a replica costs less, which, at first glance, will help you save money, it also lasts much less.
- If the room is compact and does not stand out in size, then you can purchase a small hanging chair. Models with stands will clutter up the space.
- A plastic chair is suitable for the kitchen. It is easy to clean from dirt and is also most protected from damage.
- The hanging chair should be wicker if it is installed in a room with a country style, and if it is fusion, then it is better to give preference to a plastic model.
What is a hanging chair
The hanging chair first appeared in the 1950s in Denmark. It was created by the famous Danish designer Nanna Dietzel, when she hung an “egg” with a hole for sitting in her apartment. These unusual swings became the prototype of modern chair models. This thing was unlike all the usual things: it hung and swayed, could spin around its axis and almost hid the person who sat in it from prying eyes. The artist’s guests liked the new piece of furniture, and in 1968 designer Eero Aarnio created a commercial version of the egg made of plastic.
