As soon as a rocking chair appears in the house, it immediately becomes a favorite piece of furniture for all family members. For the opportunity to sway soothingly and measuredly on it, forgetting about worries and fuss, the chair is ready to forgive a slight creaking and even slight damage to the flooring. The pendulum mechanism is able to eliminate all shortcomings without changing the effect of uniform swinging. This mechanism is called a “glider”. It is an excellent alternative to the classic rocking chair.
Young mothers especially love the glider chair - you can comfortably feed and lull your baby on it. Not a single extra sound will interfere with the baby’s sound, peaceful sleep. Please your family, give a gift to women - make a chair with a pendulum mechanism with your own hands.
Chair with pendulum mechanism
The pendulum mechanism is used not only in chairs, but also in the production of cribs. The cradle and seat are suspended on rigid wooden or metal hinges to a fixed, stable base. Movement, as in traditional rocking chairs, is only possible back and forth. In order for the swing to be easy and smooth, bearings are often used to connect the base and seat.
Experienced craftsmen advise installing hinge mounts in such a way that when stationary, their shape resembles a trapezoid with the larger side at the top. This feature of mounting the fastening allows you to not exceed the amplitude of movement when swinging and, accordingly, makes the product more stable, and therefore safer. Use our tips and your work experience to make a pendulum chair for your home.

Description of work
The parts of the supporting part of the chair (base – B) are made from boards with a section of 2x6″ (51x152 mm), all the rest are made from planks 2x4″ (51x102 mm). The dimensions of the base parts are shown in the photo below:
- Cut the strips to the required length with a circular saw.
- To ensure that all internal and external curves on the parts are the same, use a French ruler as a stencil, marking the points of contact with the workpiece with tape. You can use other means at hand, for example, a round jar of varnish or primer.
- Cut off the excess using a band saw.
- The upper parts of the base consist of three parts, which are attached to each other and to the lower part with spikes. To cut tenons (1″ – 2.5 cm long), make cuts about 5 mm deep, then use a clamp to secure the part vertically and cut off all excess with a saw.
- Prepare tenons in the same manner on 3 pieces that are 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) long. Using these blanks we will fasten the right and left parts of the base.
- Use a router with a 0.75″ drill bit to make blind holes for tenon joints in the base pieces. The holes should be 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide and 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep.
- Apply glue to the surfaces to be joined, as well as in the grooves, and tightly fasten the parts of the upper part of the base. Secure the joints with clamps until the glue is completely dry.
If excess glue protrudes at the joint seams, remove it immediately with a damp rag or sponge. Then, when finishing, you will not have problems with uneven coating of the product with varnish or stain.
- Use a drill to drill 0.25 inch (0.6 cm) holes on both sides of the top pieces of the base.
When working with a drill, make sure that the drill enters at an angle of 90 degrees. The correct operation of the hinges will depend on the accuracy of the work performed.
- Place the upper pieces of the base against the lower pieces. Use a pencil to mark the places where the grooves will be prepared to connect the upper and lower parts.
- Cut the grooves in the same way as you did earlier in the upper parts of the base.
- Glue the parts together. To tightly compress the uneven edge of the structure with clamps, temporarily place the cut pieces of wood.
- Round the corners on the resulting parts, carefully sand the surface. You can smooth corners in hard-to-reach places using a simple device - wrap a small piece of sandpaper around a dowel.
- Proceed to assemble the two pieces that form the base. Apply glue to the surfaces to be joined and make connections. Secure the structure with several clamps.
The base is ready, now it's time to start creating the seat and backrest. For production we will use 2x6″ boards.
- We use the lines of a French ruler to get a comfortable shape for the seat. If this form is not comfortable for you, make the necessary changes. We use the resulting part as a pattern for another similar one (2 side seat supports). You can take the measurements of the parts shown in the photo below.
- On each seat piece, you need to set back 1.25″ (3.2 cm) from the thinner edge and make a groove at an angle of 106 degrees. An electronic digital angle meter will help with this.
- Using a miter saw, cut grooves in the back base pieces to a depth of 3/4″ (7mm).
- Use a drill to prepare 4 holes in the bottom of the seat parts for mounting the chair. They should be located in the shape of a quadrangle at an angle of 113 degrees. Countersink the holes.
- Prepare holes in the center of the back parts for screw fastenings when aligning the parts into grooves.
- Start preparing 23″ (58.4 cm) long slats for the back (15 pieces) and seat (14 pieces). It is advisable to make the pieces in different widths to range from thinner 1 inch (2.5 cm) to thick 2 inch (5 cm).
- You don’t have to process one side of each part - it will be the back of the seat and back. On the front side of each plank, round all corners and ends, and sand the surface.
- At both ends of the planks, measure and mark the locations of the screw holes for attaching to the bases. Drill holes and countersink them at the top.
- Assemble the sides of the seat together using eight (4 per connection) 1.4″ (36mm) deck screws.
- Check the planks to ensure that they are the same length after processing. Begin installing the slats by screwing the widest slats onto the lower part of the backrest.
To ensure that the distance between the planks is the same, use a plank with a thickness of about 3 mm as a stencil.
- Now cut out 4 chair leg pieces as shown in the picture. Each piece should be 23.5 inches (59.7 cm) long, with parallel ends beveled at a 10-degree angle.25. Sand the edges of the parts.
- Place the legs on the chair seat so that they are centered. The legs should fit snugly, so make marks with a pencil on the slats that need to be trimmed.
- Attach the legs to the seat with 4 screws and glue. The front leg should be positioned so that the distance from the bottom edge to the base of the seat is 9.8 inches (24.9 cm).
- To install the rear legs, remove the 3 screws that match the mounting location. Then install again with screws and glue.
- Cut armrest blanks from 1x6″ (2.5x15.2 cm) boards. The shape of these parts can be arbitrary, but at the end, the place of contact with the back, you need to make a cutout. Don't forget to make the edges of the armrests rounded and sand the surface.
- To attach the armrests using the pocket hole device, make 2 holes at the top ends of the legs.
- Install the armrests.
- Using a special cutter, prepare plugs from the remaining pieces of wood or plywood to close the recesses at the joints with screws. If you are going to use the chair outdoors, this will protect the metal fasteners from moisture and damage.
- Place plugs in the holes using glue. Remove any parts protruding from the surface.
Finishing should be done when the chair mechanism is not yet assembled. This will keep the metal parts in working condition.
- If necessary, additionally sand the surface of all parts of the chair.
- Coat the wood with primer. To increase the material's resistance to weathering, apply 2 layers alternately.
- After drying, coat the chair with varnish.
- Attach the brackets with large screws and nuts, one end to the top of the base, and the other to the bottom of the legs. Do this offset so that a line drawn through the 4 attachment points forms a trapezoid with a large base at the top, as shown in the photo.

How to make your own metal pendulum-type chair?
To create such a piece of furniture, you will need:
- metal profile 15 by 30 mm;
- steel strip 30 mm wide and 3 mm thick;
- pipe with a diameter of 32 mm;
- rod 12 mm.
Naturally, the work cannot be done without an angle grinder with a disc for working on metal, a welding machine, a measuring tool and a clamp. To work with pipes, you will still have to find a special tool for bending the profile.
You will need to perform the following actions in strict sequence:
- Making a life-size drawing. First of all, before making a pendulum rocking chair, we create a drawing. On a flat floor, draw the side of the chair. To make your work a little easier, lay some home chair on its side and circle the seat and back.
Important! Please note that the fewer curved elements in your product, the easier it will be for you to assemble it.
- Creating a housing for bearings. Measure along the width of the bearing and cut 8 rings from the pipe, that is, their number should correspond to the number of bearings used. Weld a plug on one side of the part, use a washer for this. It is important that the central hole in the washers is slightly smaller in diameter than the existing rod.
- Assembling the side parts of the seat and back. Bend the profile according to the existing drawing, weld two identical sidewalls. Attach them to the drawing and check that they are assembled correctly.
- Preparing the sides of the base. Using a special device, bend the profile according to the drawing, make four such parts.
- Seat assembly. Cut 5 jumpers from the profile to the required length of the chair. Weld the jumpers to the sides, weld the chair parts on the metal frame. Bend the handrails from the remains of the profile and weld them on the sides of the already assembled product.
- Seat cover. Cut pieces of steel strip to match the length of the jumpers and weld them to the seat frame.
- Installation of the lower support. Weld together the finished curved sections of the profile, 2 pieces each. Weld an identical piece of profile to the end surfaces of the curved parts, as a result you will get a structure that resembles a bow. Using jumpers, weld two side panels at the top and bottom. Place the finished chair on the welded base, weld the crossbars on it from below.
- Attaching movable suspensions. Weld bearing units with rods inserted into them at the bottom of the chair and the top of the curved sides. Connect the knots on the sides and the chair with equal length pieces of rod.

Is it possible to assemble a pendulum mechanism for a sliding chair on your own?
The pendulum design moves the upper part of the chair relative to its base. To do it yourself you need a detailed diagram. It's not an easy job. But the principle of operation of the mechanism is always the same. For the simplest design you will need:
- 4 bars of the same length and two of a larger length (sizes are chosen depending on the design scheme);
- 8 bearing nuts and washers.
Instructions:
- Assemble the bars and drill one hole in them at each end for the bearings.
- Make an end beam (it holds the weight of the entire sliding structure):
- Attach each end part to two bars. This will be a simple pendulum mechanism. Next, it is connected to the base of the chair and the seat. An example of the finished design is below.
Rocking chair made of plastic (polypropylene) pipes: diagram and operating procedure
The chair can also be made from profiled metal or simple water pipes. To work you will need:
- plastic pipes with a diameter of 25 mm (for sidewalls) and 20 mm (for transverse elements);
- drill and pipe welding machine;
- fittings with a cross-section of 15 mm (inserted into pipes to enhance the stability of the chair);
- fittings for corner connections (2 pcs. - for 90° and 6 pcs. - for 45°);
- pipe plugs;
- pencil, ruler.
Instructions:
To make the chair comfortable, you need to attach a 50 mm thick foam mattress to the frame. To do this, you will need a cover with ties, which is easy to sew yourself (by machine or even by hand).
You can give a plastic pipe a rounded shape using hot sand. To do this, the sand is heated in the oven to 95–130 °C, a plug is inserted into one end of the part, the tube is filled with sand, given the required shape and wait for it to cool.
Desire and basic skills in working with tools are all you need to independently build a comfortable and beautiful rocking chair for your home or cottage. The described instructions will help you do this correctly and quickly.
This chair was made for himself by Vladislav Emelyanov. In my opinion, this is an excellent example of work when you really want to do something, but there are no drawings, as well as the skills to make them. There's a lot to learn.
Banknotes were spent on everything:
1500 - bars 1400 - fabric 500 - foam rubber 1000 - sewing covers 600 - fittings, screws, bolts
Total: about 5,000 rubles.
In the design part, Vladislav was helped by a girl who already had this chair - she sent photos with dimensions (taken with a sewing meter). Then everything was customized to suit your needs. Here are these photos for people who want to repeat it.
The process began with gluing 20*20 bars, because there were no suitable blanks available, which once again speaks of the author’s determination
For this purpose, these homemade clamps were used.
Next, cotter pins were driven into the end of each block with glue for greater strength.
Well, the bars themselves were cut out. I drew the curves with a compass and cut them out with a jigsaw. Then I sanded the whole thing - the most tedious process.
In this way, all the necessary parts were made. We begin with the manufacture of supports. We screw vertical posts to the horizontal parts (screws + glue)
Using a Forstner cutter, we drill niches for the connectors in them and grind cylindrical connecting parts for them.
We drive them into each other with glue, assembling the frame of the support.
The same design, but from a different angle.
Let's move on to making the hinge part. This required bolts, washers and ball bearings. Using a Forstner cutter of suitable diameter, the bearings are recessed into the workpiece
It was necessary to make a secret connection. So that there are no through holes. To do this, I drilled a hole, hammered in an M12 nut and screwed a washer on top so that the nut would not fall out
We are preparing the bases for the sides of the hinge module. To do this, drill blind holes in the slats at equal distances.
Then they are assembled into solid blocks using glue.
Now we bolt them to the previously assembled base.
Another angle.
We assemble and install the seat on the base. (Rectangular frame with transverse slats). The bolts are recessed into blind holes into which the cylindrical armrest posts will then go. We attach the back, assembled in a similar way, to it.
The armrests are assembled according to a principle similar to the sidewalls of the hinged part.
We install armrests.
They are fixed with furniture bolts to the back, giving additional rigidity.
Foam cushions are cut to fit the size of the seat and backrest. After that, covers were ordered for these pillows.
The chair was then disassembled and painted. For this purpose, aquatex, walnut color, was used. In two layers.
I'll show you the rolling unit again after painting.
And finally, the finale of all the work, which took several months after work.

It is difficult to find a person who would not like to rock in a comfortable chair with a cup of tea in hand on a warm summer evening. But such furniture, unfortunately, is not available in all homes, most likely because it is not cheap in stores. In this material we will tell you how to create a rocking chair with a pendulum mechanism with your own hands from accessible and understandable materials. We will present to your attention two of the simplest designs; the final choice is yours.
Meet the innovative glider chair EGO BALANCE
To describe the new EGO Balance massage chair, you only need a few words - Comfort, Convenience, Innovation.
This is true, because EGO Balance is the first glider chair in Russia with a massage function. A chair with a pendulum swinging mechanism, called a glider, has always been associated with absolute idyll and tranquility, creating the comfort of a homely atmosphere. The presence of a glider chair in the interior certainly indicates that the owners of the house value peace and comfort, and are also very selective in the selection of furniture. EGO Balance differs from its analogues in its built-in massage function, exquisite design, highly durable upholstery and high-quality materials. In addition to the chair, you can choose a massage headrest, footrest and seat cover. The chair comes in two main colors: Chocolate and Caramel. Upon request, you can choose a different color for the upholstery, as well as premium upholstery Elite (a combined combination of natural and artificial leather) and Premium (all-natural leather).
Comfortable stay 100 percent
EGO Balance is a chair for 100% comfortable relaxation. It can be used as an ordinary glider chair, instantly turning into a massage chair. The modern PPU filler comfortably supports your back, and an additional footrest (optional) allows you to comfortably sit in a semi-lying position. EGO BALANCE is a harmony of design and versatility, as they say, all in one bottle! The design takes into account the implementation of several types of effects at once, providing soft heating, vibration massage, as well as kneading and rolling effects. The user can use individual adjustments of the massage rollers in width or fix the impact in a certain area.
Types of rocking chairs
When many people mention this phrase, they remember furniture from the countryside or a beloved film about a skilled detective who loved to think about his next case, wrapped in a warm blanket and smoking a pipe. But we decided to dispel this stereotype and present the rocking chair as ultra-modern and fashionable furniture. It is suitable for any interior due to the abundance of models on the market. Before you get started and make a pendulum rocking chair with your own hands, familiarize yourself with the most popular varieties of such products.
Types of chairs:
- Model on skids. This design can safely be called traditional, since the seat in it is attached by means of curved guides, that is, runners. The main advantage of this design is its low cost and simple assembly. The only negative is that when swinging, the runners get very scratched.
- Pendulum type models. The designs are more complex; they have a fixed base and a seat, which are connected independently of each other. Such furniture is safe and stable, and it does not harm the floor covering at all.
Materials
Gliders are fairly simple designs that you can make with your own hands. Before starting production, you should familiarize yourself with the possible options:
- Wooden chairs.
They are made of boards and bars, all connected with special fasteners. - Metal constructions.
Gliders of this type are quite common, as they are durable and original. The metal is very flexible, which allows you to create unique frames that will suit different interior styles. - Wicker chairs.
The main material used here is wicker or artificial rattan. It should be noted that the pendulum mechanism itself is made of a more durable material (wood or metal). Chairs of this type are very beautiful and durable.
It should be noted that all the materials described can be combined with each other. This allows you to get beautiful and durable designs.
You can make a rocking chair using ready-made drawings that are easy to find on the Internet. Sometimes it is necessary to use diagrams of metal structures. For the pendulum design you will need the following:
- Boards measuring 51×152 mm and 51×102 mm.
For such purposes, you can use
solid pine. - Hinges – 4 pcs.
- Special screws
for pocket holes. - Paints and varnishes.
This includes everything from primer to protective varnish. - Glue.
- Tools.
To work with wood, you will need a circular saw, a drill with a set of drills, sandpaper, a sander and much more.
How to assemble a wooden chair on runners on your own?
Have you decided to make a pendulum rocking chair on runners? Drawings can be found on the Internet, then simply use the proposed diagram or adjust the proposed sizes at your discretion, taking into account your own physique and personal preferences.
Complete the assembly according to the suggested instructions:
- Selecting the radius for the runners. Make diagonal cuts on the rail so that you can then insert the ends of the plywood strip there. Place the cuts from each other at a distance sufficient for the plywood to bend to the required radius. The depth of the cuts must be at least 3 cm.
Important! Try to make cuts strictly perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the main rail, since its curvature will cause the runners to simply warp.
- Setting a landmark. Insert a 1.2 m long strip of plywood into the prepared cuts. Please note that the distance from the lamella to the slats should be 15 cm at the greatest point of bending. Attach the structure to the workbench, circle the radius, marking the center on the curved strip. On the workbench, according to the circled radius, lay out the stocks and screw them to the table using self-tapping screws. Screw the plywood onto the slipway.
- Installation of limiters. Place bars of the same size on the table surface to prevent the lamellas from slipping, and secure them with self-tapping screws on the table.
- Gluing the runners. Take 8 slats, lubricate them with glue, attach them to the strip that is attached to the stocks, align them along the marks set in the center. Install the first clamp directly in the center, placing a block and tighten securely. Secure the edges of the slats with clamps, but do not tighten too much. Align the clamps from the center to the edges and tighten. Once the slat pack is fully secured, tighten the outermost clamps.
Important! Leave the workpiece in this form, motionless, for several days so that the glue dries completely.
- Alignment of runners. Clearly following the marks on the centers, place homemade runners opposite each other, secure them through clamps with transverse crossbars. Check how well your structure swings. Cut the ends of the runners at right angles and glue them through the grooves of the knobs.
- Preparation of reinforcing elements. If you install the seat directly on wooden runners, they are guaranteed to crack. Therefore, cut out amplifiers from the board, in other words, the same runners, only shorter. Using a router, make grooves for connecting the runners to the amplifier with cotter pins.
- Connection of runners with amplifiers. Lubricate the surfaces of the elements to be glued with glue, insert the cotter pins into the technological holes. Connect the runners to the reinforcements so that they are glued along their entire length. Tighten the parts with clamps until the glue dries completely.
- Creation of side racks. Cut template drawings from plywood according to the shape of the side post. Draw and cut out six racks according to the diagram. Grind the wooden blanks with the attached template using a router. Make a groove at the end of each rack for tenons that are pre-mounted in the amplifiers.
- Gluing the side posts. Apply glue to the groove in the side posts, and also apply it to the tenon and near it. Place the stand on the spike and press it tightly against the body of the amplifier. Follow the same steps with both skids.
- Base connection. Use transverse braces to connect the sidewalls to the runners. Do this with self-tapping screws, screwing them in from the outside.
- Seat assembly. Cut two sides from a solid board. From the inside, cut a continuous longitudinal groove in them. Connect the sides together by inserting the slats and fixing them with glue. Install the slats as tightly as possible so that there is no gap.
- Assembly of all elements. Using glue and tenons, attach the seat to the side supports. Cut and install the armrests. Cover the chair with varnish.
This is such a wonderful, durable, stable and comfortable pendulum rocking chair you can create with your own hands.
Algorithm
The process of creating a rocking chair consists of the following sequential operations:
- First, the pendulum is assembled.
It consists of two main parts, which are connected by hinges. It is formed from wooden blocks that need to be cut according to the selected drawing. For connection, grooves and glue are used. You should begin full assembly only after the surfaces to be glued have dried. - The next step is to make the seat.
The shape of the back can be different, but many argue that it is better to choose the classics. First of all, a frame is created that should follow the shape of the back. It is made from bars that are connected to each other by several transverse supports.
