Every person wants to feel comfortable in their apartment. But what to do if there is a bloodsucker at home who sneaks up at night and sucks blood from unsuspecting residents? And we are not talking about vampires from horror films, but about ordinary apartment bugs. Their favorite delicacy is blood. Parasites, as a rule, choose places closer to their food source, that is, to humans. They are active at night, so they most often settle in beds and sofas on which people sleep.

Such bugs are called bed bugs. Individuals that live in sofas are popularly called sofa bugs. They reproduce very quickly; it is enough to bring one female into a house or apartment, which will immediately choose a secluded place and begin to actively lay larvae. Even if you bought new furniture, this does not mean that it is not infected. The question arises: how did bedbugs appear on the sofa?

Reasons for appearance

Parasites enter the home in search of food. The sofa and bed are the favorite habitats of bed bugs: the victim sleeps here and gives the parasites his blood.

A warm, soft bed, folds and seams where it is easy to hide, tight areas, corners, wooden boxes for storing blankets and pillows are an ideal habitat for blood-sucking parasites. At night, all that remains is to crawl out of the shelter, get close to the sleeping person, get enough, then hide in the cracks and seams of upholstered furniture.

Dangerous insects enter the house in different ways:

  • with a new sofa or used furniture;
  • after frequent trips, stays in cheap hotels;
  • from stale bed linen or blankets on trains;
  • after purchasing expensive antiques (paintings, upholstered furniture, antique lamps with soft lampshades, books);
  • when moving into an old house;
  • on clothes bought secondhand;
  • after a visit to the owners, who have unpleasant “neighbors” living in their upholstered furniture.

Preventive measures

First, they protect the home from blood-sucking insects: they make cosmetic repairs, it is important to fill the gaps between the pipes leading into the apartment, restore the surfaces of the floor and walls in each room, and eliminate leaks in corner areas. Additionally, the ventilation ducts are covered with a fine-mesh insect net. Then the likelihood of bedbugs infesting your home is reduced.

The crumbling plaster is being restored in areas where sockets are installed - bedbugs often enter the facility through cable ducts.

To get rid of insects, purchased used items, including a sofa, are kept in the cold or washed at high temperatures. Use fresh herbs, such as wormwood.

How to recognize the presence of parasites in the sofa

Many signs indicate the presence of bed bugs:

  • after waking up, strange bites are noticeable on the person’s body. Many people think that these are mosquitoes, but a bedbug attack is easy to recognize by its characteristic pattern: bedbug bites form a “path.” Between adjacent red dots the distance reaches several centimeters. So the bloodsuckers move throughout the night, gradually becoming saturated in different places;
  • bites do not appear every day: a well-fed parasite goes hunting about once a week. A red dot is noticeable in the center of the swollen area: here the bug pierced the skin and drank blood;
  • after sleep, strange red-brown spots are visible on the sheet, duvet cover, and pillow. This sign also indicates the appearance of blood-sucking parasites;
  • the stale, musty smell of the bed indicates a large concentration of dangerous bloodsuckers. The cause of the unpleasant phenomenon is the waste of parasites, secretions when an insect is accidentally crushed;
  • There are black spots visible on the back of the sofa, wooden elements, walls, floor, and in the baseboard area. Excrement spoils the appearance of products and premises and directly indicates the presence of dangerous “neighbors”;
  • early in the morning, after a “meal”, well-fed, slow-moving bedbugs can be found in the bed, under the upholstery of the sofa, in the corners. Hungry insects are small - only 3 mm in length; a well-fed parasite swells to 8 mm and barely moves. Destroying him at this moment is quite simple.

Why do bedbugs appear in Moscow?

A sofa bug, like any other living organisms, cannot appear out of nowhere. Usually the reasons for their appearance are quite banal:

  1. A person came to the house and brought bedbugs on clothes, a bag, certain things or in boxes, etc.
  2. The parasites spread through utility lines from neighboring apartments. Bed bugs multiply quickly and after a while begin to starve; through such travel they try to find new sources of food.
  3. If you buy used furniture, or transport it from a relative's old house, the risk of bed bugs infesting your sleeping area is also quite high.
  4. Bedbugs can be brought from travel or from guests in a bag or suitcase.

After getting into your home, bed bugs try to gain access to the human body by any means, since blood is their main source of nutrition. The most convenient place in this regard is a sleeping place. During sleep, a person practically does not resist the bites and does not cause any harm to the bedbugs. After completing the search for the best place in the apartment, insects begin to actively reproduce. Most often, their permanent habitats are a bed, a chair, a children's sleeping place, etc.

How to withdraw: effective methods

It is easy to disassemble the bed to its foundation, steam or thoroughly wash all areas, and reassemble the piece of furniture. A sofa is a hassle and a lot of problems if there are blood-sucking parasites inside.

The structure is difficult to disassemble into small parts, only a sofa that has served for many years can be poured with boiling water, and dozens of decorative seams serve as a safe haven for tiny insects. What to do? Experienced exterminators give useful advice.

Note to owners:

  • You need to start the fight by accurately identifying the places where parasites accumulate. The more nests and ovipositions there are in the apartment, the easier it is to remove all the individuals;
  • It is important to remember that sofa bugs settle not only on the sleeping place, but also behind torn wallpaper, inside dried out baseboards, behind the frames of old paintings, in dusty lampshades;
  • the first stage is the removal of all small parts from the sofa: pillows, bedspreads, drawers for bed linen, decorative covers. Clean textiles and wooden structures from excrement and dead insects, disinfect them, treat them with aerosols and toxic solutions against bedbugs. A good option is to wash it, freeze it at a temperature below -18 degrees, or steam it in a dryer, where the thermometer rises above +50 C. You can have the items dry-cleaned, making sure to notify the employees about the purpose of the treatment;
  • The next stage is to move the sofa from its usual place and cover it with construction film. Tear off the old wallpaper from the walls if the pieces are hanging loosely, seal the cracks in the baseboards or replace the designs with new ones. It is necessary to clean not only the sofa from blood-sucking insects, but also the area around it;
  • Often when removing wallpaper, bedbugs scatter across the walls and floor. The ideal option is to prepare a vacuum cleaner in advance, collect the pests, then wash the pests down the drain. It is even easier for owners who have a washing vacuum cleaner to get rid of water with drowned insects;
  • Spray the insecticide on the floor, walls, and treat the area where the sofa will be after moving it (if the owners are going to move the sleeping place). For washing floors, a soap-soda solution with the addition of a small amount of chloramine or bleach is suitable;
  • After washing floors or rinsing rags, pour water only into the toilet, rinse well so that all insects drown. For a vacuum cleaner while fighting bloodsuckers, it is advisable to buy a disposable dust bag so that you don’t mind throwing it away along with the collected parasites;
  • Treat dried floors again with insecticides containing permethrin. This component is harmful to bedbugs;
  • After disinsection of the walls and floor, it is advisable to make “paths” from a natural powder called diatomaceous earth. The drug dries out the outer shell of the bug after contact with the product. As soon as the parasite crawls along the path of powder, the substance begins to act, and within a day or two the individual will die;
  • General cleaning is allowed to be done after a certain time: the validity period is different for each drug. After using some compounds, for example, Karbofos, it is advisable for residents to leave the premises for 5–7 days. With this processing method, the result will be as durable as possible.

How to properly treat a sofa

After disinsection of the walls and floor, you need to deal with the sofa. If the parasites manage to get onto surfaces on which a toxic drug has already been sprayed, the bedbugs will certainly die.

Effective methods:

  • steam treatment. For the procedure you will need a powerful steam generator. If you have such a thing in the house, you need to go over the entire surface of the sofa with the device, carefully treating the seams, corners, and folds. High temperatures will kill the parasites. An iron with a steam function is suitable. The method is more labor-intensive than using a steam generator, but if all zones are thoroughly processed, the result will also be positive;
  • chemical compositions. A reliable, proven method of exterminating blood-sucking insects. In the departments of construction supermarkets and stores for gardeners, there is a wide selection of compounds for combating harmful insects. After purchasing an insecticide, you need to properly dilute the product according to the instructions, put on protective clothing, plastic glasses, a respirator, and spray the product using a spray bottle. Exactly following the instructions guarantees excellent results.

Important! A couple of days after disinfestation, you need to select dead insects, eggs and larvae from the sofa. Some medications require reapplication.

Chemicals

Effective compositions for combating bed bugs:

  • Executioner (concentrated emulsion).
  • Insecticide (solution in a spray bottle).
  • Karbofos (wettable powder, suspension concentrate).
  • Combat (aerosol).
  • Tsifoks (concentrated liquid).
  • Tetrix (concentrate in cans).
  • Fufanon Super (concentrated liquid in ampoules).
  • Forsyth (suspension).

Folk remedies: is there any effect?

To remove bedbugs from a sofa, it is advisable to use synthetic preparations: plant components are suitable for repelling “uninvited guests”, but not for destroying adult bedbugs and eggs. After disinfestation, you can place bouquets of wormwood or tansy wrapped in gauze in boxes, in drawers for storing bed linen, and put bouquets of wormwood or tansy wrapped in gauze inside the upholstery or covers.

Not only bedbugs, but also fleas, ticks, and cockroaches do not tolerate pungent natural odors and are less likely to get inside upholstered furniture. A pungent aroma is a good protection against attacks by dangerous parasites and pests.

Insect repellers: benefits or myths

Some owners hope that modern devices will help remove parasites from the sofa. Sometimes there are complaints about poor performance of the device: the owners say that the repeller emits impulses, but the bedbugs in the sofa do not disappear. No wonder: the device is not suitable for combating parasites inside upholstered furniture.

An ultrasonic and magnetic resonance repeller works in an open space; a sofa, an armchair, thick curtains, a velor lampshade are obstacles in the path of sound and electromagnetic waves. The device is ineffective if the room is filled with upholstered furniture and there is little free space. For this reason, buying a bedbug repeller to remove bedbugs from your sofa is a waste of money.

What is needed to treat a room against bedbugs?

Here are a few mandatory steps that must be completed before processing:

  • wash the floors well and wipe off the dust, because after treatment you cannot clean for 3 days;
  • cover or put away all dishes and food. This especially applies to small containers (salt shakers, sugar bowls);
  • remove all animals: close and turn off the aquarium, remove all reptiles, amphibians and birds from the room (this does not apply to warm-blooded animals (cats, dogs, rats), because the treatment is safe for them);
  • for maximum effective processing there should be no debris of clothes or linen, open access to hard-to-reach places;
  • Remove all bedding and boil. This is necessary to destroy bedbug eggs.

In this matter, the most important thing is to be patient and be prepared for anything, because processing can take a whole month. Workers need to visit the site more than once to ensure that you are free from bedbugs or further hatching of their eggs.

Prevention of parasites

The following steps will help reduce the risk of bedbugs infesting your sofa:

  • regular cleaning of the apartment (necessarily using a vacuum cleaner), absence of cluttered places;
  • when purchasing, carefully examine the furniture not only from above, but also from the inside, especially if the sofa or bed is classified as used;
  • checking all elements when choosing antique furniture, mirrors with massive frames, paintings, books, table lamps;
  • thorough check of luggage upon return from travel, mandatory washing and ironing of items after travel;
  • regular inspection of the sleeping area, attention to unusual details (bites on the body, but the nasty mosquito squeak is not heard, or black dots have appeared on the wooden parts of upholstered furniture, walls);
  • cosmetic repairs in the apartment as necessary: replacing dried out skirting boards, gluing up torn wallpaper, eliminating cracks in the floor, window sills and doors.

It is quite difficult to remove bedbugs from a sofa: you will have to be patient and purchase high-quality insecticides for treating soft parts and wooden elements. For an excellent result, two treatments will be needed: this will kill not only the adult individuals, but also the egg-laying of blood-sucking insects. After exterminating the bedbugs, it is advisable to place bouquets of plants with a pungent odor around the apartment to prevent the reappearance of bedbugs.

Useful tips from Elena Malysheva on how to get rid of bedbugs in an apartment and furniture:

Peculiarities of life activity of house bugs

When a female is brought indoors, she breeds, even if she is still alone in her new home. The insect lays up to 5 eggs daily. At the same time, it increases slightly in size. For further reproduction, a female only needs to mate once with a male. For this reason, the colony begins to develop in a new place after the appearance of this insect.

Over the course of a female's life, up to 500 eggs can appear.

When the temperature drops below +10°C (tends to 0°C), indoor insects fall into a state that resembles suspended animation. At the same time, all processes in their body slow down, the need for food disappears.

If you don’t know about this feature, you might think that the insect has died. However, after the normal temperature is restored, the parasites “wake up”. They are very hungry and immediately look for a source of food. Parasites attack people at night when a person is sleeping. This happens between 2 and 5 am.

When there are a lot of pests in the apartment, bites on the body still appear daily. This is due to the fact that different parasites attack on different days. The more bedbugs there are at home, the more a person suffers from them.

Itching, pain, swelling, redness are clear signs of bed bug bites.

Table: what bedbugs look like at different stages of development

The shape of the parasites (females and males) remains unchanged. However, other parameters change: body color, size, some functions. To understand what a bedbug looks like, it is recommended to study the table below.

Type of parasiteLength, mmColorStructure, functions
Egg1-1,5White, milkyOval, reminiscent of a grain of rice, on one side there is a cap through which an insect appears
Larva1-5, length depends on the stage of development, after each molt the insect increases in size by an average of 0.5-1 mmTransparent, milky (at the initial stage of development), when the small parasite goes through the last molt, it turns into a mature brown insectThe body shape is the same as that of large bugs. What distinguishes larvae from adults is the lack of the ability to inject saliva with an anesthetic under the skin of a person when bitten. Are unable to reproduce
Adult (female)8Dark brownThey anesthetize the bite and can reproduce many times without a male after mating once with him.
Adult (male)6Dark brownAnesthetizes the bite, does not bear offspring

How long do bed bugs live?

The duration of existence of such parasites depends on environmental conditions. So, at a temperature of +25...+35°C, domestic bugs can exist for 10-12 months. This is the average of their lives. The higher the air temperature at home, the faster the bedbugs will die. For example, if the value of this parameter reaches +45°C, the parasite will die quickly - in 45 minutes.

When the ambient temperature drops significantly, the insects die. When exposed to extreme cold (-17°C), they can survive for 1 day. If the temperature continues to change (reaches -20°C), the parasite dies faster.

In even more severe conditions (-25°C), the bedbug dies instantly.
