Paneled door: design and types
A door leaf assembled from inserts framed in a wooden frame is called a panel door. Thanks to the panels, a smooth door leaf turns into an original interior detail with decorative shapes, and the use of a unique door set: handles, hinges, locking mechanisms helps you choose a stylish door for any interior.
Paneled doors can be used inside rooms, as well as used as external entrance doors, but the material used to make the paneled inserts is important. Interior doors are made in a lighter version, with inserts made of plywood, thin wood, glass, and MDF.
External paneled doors are made of strong, solid wood or metal. In the photo you can see the options for external and internal paneled doors.
Design of interior panel doors
Where are panel structures used?
Having a simplified structure, affordable cost, and ease of handling, doors without panels have become widespread in various areas of public and private construction. They are used:
- for equipping residential complexes, office buildings, hospitals, administrative and educational institutions that need large quantities of inexpensive but functional products of the same type;
- in the role of technical and service solutions. Simple and practical models are installed in closets, attics, in rooms intended for storing cleaning equipment, building materials, etc.
And yet, despite the simplicity of installing interior doors without panels, they are used to create stylish and bright interiors, decorated according to the principles of techno, loft, and minimalism.
Paneled door designs, types of panels
In general, the design of the paneled fabric is not complicated. Thinner panels are inserted into the finished wooden frame made of hardwood, which are fixed in special grooves and secured with figured overlays. To achieve additional strength, the panels are reinforced with glazing beads, which are glued with adhesive or carefully nailed to the wooden structure of the door leaf.
Paneled doors are usually classified according to the material of manufacture:
Door leaves made of valuable wood.
To make these doors, expensive wood is used, which has a unique natural texture. Each door made of valuable wood has a unique pattern. The materials for production are: oak, walnut, teak, mahogany, hornbeam, valuable species of garden trees.
The parts of paneled doors made of valuable species are connected into special grooves. The joints of the parts are almost impossible to notice. Additionally, a special selection of details is made according to shade and texture. The wood is pre-treated with antiseptic treatment to increase its fire-fighting properties.
Doors made of natural wood have many advantages: reliability, long service life, strength, high aesthetic values, but they are easily flammable and have a fairly high cost. A special feature of paneled doors made from valuable species is their significant weight, which must be taken into account during installation.

Door fillings made of coniferous wood.
The most common application for residential premises and economy class facilities. Due to the low cost of coniferous wood, paneled doors made of coniferous materials are characterized by low cost, and therefore are widely in demand in the construction market.
Door leaves made of combined materials.
They have an even lower cost. For their manufacture, a frame made of pine with panels made of MDF, laminated or veneered plywood, with the application of protective impregnations is used. The doors are suitable for indoor use only.
Types of panels: main types
The variety of panels is quite wide. There are different types of panel doors on the market. They are mainly divided according to the material they use.
Types of panels according to the material used:
- Made from soft wood like pine. This option occurs most often.
- Based on valuable tree species. The most commonly used are hornbeam and oak. The panel is fastened using tongue-and-groove technology. The strength of this design is quite high.
- Combined types. For their production, fiberboard, chipboard or plywood are used. In the upper part, the material is laminated, and the veneered structures reach the consumer using different types of wood. The space in the frame can remain empty or be filled with honeycomb. Their cost is small.
Most often, combined varieties are equipped with glass. They can have different configurations and types. Glass is often made to order with an individual design.
Modern paneled models can have different designs, sizes, and shapes. Many of their variants are made in relief, carved style or painting. Glass can be stained glass or convex.
Some glasses have a matte finish. The panel is the main decoration of such structures. These elements are distinguished by their beauty and aesthetics.
Existing types of panels
Modern paneled doors involve the installation of various types of panels, which are usually classified:
- Flat panel - made of absolutely smooth sheet material. The design does not imply the presence of protrusions, overlays, or cutters.
- Volumetric panel - characterized by the presence of volumetric elements, figured or carved overlays. The most common option for panel doors.
- Stacked panel - individual lamellas are joined with a groove-tenon connection.
- Figure panel - is a part of a thick insert with a thinning edge, which is attached to the grooves with additional fixation with an adhesive compound, usually wood glue.
- Floating panel - secured using glazing beads with required gaps. This design is indispensable in rooms with changing humidity; the insert can change in size due to exposure to ambient air, while the geometric dimensions of the door do not change, and distortions, cracks and warping do not occur.
Flat panel
What is a panel?
The new term owed its appearance to craftsmen - carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, and stone processing specialists. In each of these directions it has one, unique meaning, which sometimes does not fit in with the word “fill”.
So, the panel is:
- In woodworking - plywood, thin board, panel, inserted into the frame of a door or shutter
- In finishing work - a narrow strip on the wall, delimiting areas with different decor
- In construction, a field on a wall, framed or located in a recess
- In architecture - a carved or relief decoration of a rectangular shape made of natural stone
Paneling in wood products
Paneling has become widespread as part of a wooden product. It is actively used in the production of furniture facades and interior doors.
A paneled door is considered a complex structure consisting of a frame, the gap of which is filled with panels. The material for their manufacture is wood or MDF. The rigidity of the panels contributes to the good strength characteristics of the door.
The panels present on wood products play not only a constructive role, but are often also an amazing decorative element. They are decorated with paintings and carvings, sometimes frosted glass and stained glass act as panels. Decorative and relief panels are a sure sign of high quality products, and a paneled door is considered a prestigious product.
Panel finishing
During construction and renovation work, there is often a need to distinguish between different types of decorative wall decoration or to create a harmonious transition between them. And it is the panel that can cope with this role. With its help, the boundaries of the frieze and panels are created, and all decorative elements are combined into one.
The panel is applied with paint to a painted surface or glued to wallpaper in the form of a paper strip.
Panel pulling is the term for applying a narrow strip of color using a brush and paints. The line is drawn at the junction of two areas painted in different colors. The panel may consist of several parallel strips. The paint for its application must be identical in composition to the paint with which the wall is painted. It is more liquid in consistency than the base paint, but it should contain more binder. Under the panel all the irregularities in the joints of the decorated areas are hidden; its presence gives the walls a harmonious, finished look.
And again the panel
The use of decorative panels in the manufacture of metal products has contributed to the popularity of products such as gates (sectional, sliding, swing, industrial), fences, gates and doors. Fulfilling its constructive responsibilities, the metal panel plays the role of a bright decorative element.

Modern explanatory dictionary of the Russian language by Efremova
Almost everyone has most likely heard the term paneled doors, but not everyone can explain what they are. Moreover, this type of door leaf is one of the most common.
The paneled door got its name from one of its main elements - the panel, which is a thin decorative insert in the door leaf. Its thickness is usually less than the thickness of the frame. It looks like a sheet of any material inserted inside the door leaf.
The use of panels makes it possible to avoid monotony and boredom in the design of door panels, to make them original, giving the products an unusual shape. Doors are decorated with panels, focusing the attention of others on them. Thanks to the use of interior panel doors, wider possibilities for the stylistic design of interiors open up through the harmonious combination of their various elements. The canvas may contain three-dimensional details and patterns of complex texture.
Currently, on the construction market you can see interior paintings that look like paneled ones, but have nothing in common with them.
Sellers may even call products panel doors for the sake of expression. However, often this is just an imitation of the shape of a product that has gained popularity, molding with a honeycomb filling. In this way, buyers are often misled into buying lower quality products.
Selecting a panel door
When choosing one or another option for panel doors, you should give preference to the classic options that will suit rooms of any complexity and design. Of course, the choice of the final option depends on the personal taste of the purchaser, but a proven and serious manufacturing company supplies higher quality material.
Advice! A visual inspection is required when purchasing a door! Check the geometric shape, the rigidity of the canvas, the absence of stains, burrs, chips, cracks, and glue sagging on the surface. Contact professionals to ensure your door lasts for many years.
Advantages and disadvantages
We can conclude that panel doors are a product that has the following advantages:
- aesthetic and decorative appearance;
- reducing the weight of the canvas due to the use of a thin insert instead of heavy wood;
- possibility of replacement and restoration of structural elements;
- durability, since a solid massif of soft rocks can dry out within a few years, and an insert made of another material negates this disadvantage;
- reducing the cost by reducing the amount of material used in production and replacing expensive parts with less expensive analogues.
Among the disadvantages are the use of low-quality raw materials and non-compliance with technology, but this disadvantage depends on the responsibility of the manufacturer. In general, panel doors are an ideal solution for installation in any home.
Externally, paneled doors resemble a chocolate bar with slices of various shapes and sizes, but they look solid and aesthetically pleasing. Panels are separate elements that are inserted into the frame of the door leaf. Once upon a time, paneled doors were made exclusively from solid wood, and they were installed not only in wall openings, but also as doors on furniture cabinets. Today there are a large number of combined models on the market, the inserts of which are made from a variety of modern materials.
Caring for a panel door: doing it right
In order for the door to enjoy its impeccable appearance for many years, it is necessary to ensure proper care.
Do not use aggressive household chemicals to clean wooden doors
- The surface should not be washed with detergents containing aggressive and abrasive substances, and washing doors with hard sponges should also be avoided.
- Heavy stains can be removed with an alcohol solution diluted 1:10.
- Wipes for washing should be soft and absorbent. Excess moisture during washing can cause a change in the appearance of the surface of the door leaf.
- Lacquered surfaces fade over time. To maintain perfect condition, varnished panel doors should be periodically cleaned using polishing agents or wax.
- Glass inserts are carefully cleaned with special products.
Types of interior doors by manufacturing method
Panel doors
Panel doors have a strong frame made of wooden blocks around the perimeter, the interior of the door is filled with honeycomb filling, and the top of the door is covered with MDF, laminate, or veneer of a certain color. Compared to paneled doors, such doors are not as strong and not voluminous, due to which much of the decorative effect is lost.
Paneled doors
Paneled doors, like a constructor, are assembled from parts: a frame and panel inserts. Below we will talk about them.
Tsar doors
Tsar doors differ from paneled ones only in the large number of transverse parts - tsar.
Molded doors
Molded doors are in fashion now. These are doors made entirely of glass, with only two vertical slats made of wood. Such doors are heavy because they have strong, thick glass.
