Light works wonders, and this is an indisputable fact! Designers are also aware of this: lighting receives a lot of attention when creating design projects. In order for the chandelier not only to fulfill its main function, but also to become one of the central elements of the interior, it is important to choose it taking into account the overall style of the room.
If you just want to update your chandelier and your living room is decorated in a modern interior, you are in the right place. ReRooms designers have just prepared a selection with unusual options.

Types of lamps
1. Chandeliers and ceiling pendant lights . The higher the ceiling and wider the space, the larger the chandelier can be. Today there is no need to install them in every room.
Mount chandeliers and ceiling pendant lamps in:
- living room; - corridor; - children's; - dining room; - kitchen.
Advantages: the ability to adjust the height of the lamp as comfortable as possible. Above a dining table, for example, you can lower them so low that the light outlines a separate area. The working half is somewhere there, but here it’s cozy.
Disadvantages: not suitable for low ceilings.
a) Crystal chandelier.
A chandelier has always been and will always be appropriate in the living room, regardless of fashion. If the interior is designed in a style close to classical, a crystal chandelier will become a symbol of the hearth. Light, repeatedly refracted in glass crystals, is multiplied and scattered, becoming similar to sunlight. You don't want to leave such a room. For more modern interior designs, remote control chandeliers work well. In addition to their undeniable beauty, they also allow you to adjust the light intensity without leaving your seat.
Advantages: increase in light, cozy atmosphere, solemnity.
Disadvantages: a crystal chandelier must always be clean. Or simply not be.
b) LED chandelier.
This type of chandelier will not only decorate your ceiling, but will also give your living room an atmosphere of unique comfort and charm. For more details about LED lamps, see the article Choosing an LED lamp for your home.
There are also chandeliers forged, wooden, with porcelain elements... But modern design is increasingly moving away from forms that steal light. Modern lamps can transmit, reflect and multiply more and more light. And that is great.
c) Spotlights.
Along with drywall, built-in spotlights came into our lives. They are suitable for both simple and multi-stage ceilings. There are incandescent and halogen lamps (they are smaller in diameter). If at first you could only choose between a golden and silver rim, today there are a lot of options, they come as decorations in themselves. In addition, there are special sealed structures for wet rooms.
Examples of spotlights:
d) Halogen lamps.
Under halogen lamps, the ceiling needs to be lowered much less than under conventional lamps. But do you know how to change a halogen light bulb correctly? Under no circumstances should the cone itself be touched with your hands. Because even the cleanest skin contains oil. And the flask is made of fused quartz. And even if you touch the fat, it will collapse and the light bulb will burn out. Although it won’t give you an electric shock, it’s better to change it with gloves on or by wrapping the lamp in a napkin. But if the lamps are German or American, they need to be changed every 400(!) hours.
The advantages of such lamps are innumerable:
— the ability to illuminate the desired area evenly;
— focus the beam over the desired object (the scattering angle can be selected from 8 to 60);
— divide one room into several zones.
Rasters can be placed in the ceiling, in the wall, in furniture, in the floor, and in the steps of the stairs. There are no wires sticking out. You can adjust the direction of the beam by rotating the movable element in the “socket” of the lampshade. Ideal for even the lowest ceilings, they combine perfectly with any others due to their unobtrusiveness. Rasters arranged in a row increase the space. If around the entire perimeter of the room, then when the light is on, the room visually increases in size by one and a half times.
The disadvantage is that you need a place to hide the wiring and transformer for 12 V light bulbs.
So we smoothly moved from general lighting to local lighting. Although designers argue which type is better, it’s up to you to decide. And I believe that there should be harmony in everything.

Types of wall lamps: variety of assortment
Manufacturers pay close attention to the appearance of lamps, because they are used as decorative elements. Craftsmen experiment with materials, shape and design of products. It is not surprising that store catalogs are constantly updated with interesting, non-trivial models. Despite the variety of design options, the devices have one thing in common - the method of mounting. In terms of design, the available range is divided into several categories:
- A sconce lamp with a lampshade pressed tightly against the wall.
Such products look laconic and discreet. The winning side of the devices is practicality, they are easy to care for. The shape of the lampshade depends solely on the designer’s imagination - it can be round, oval, square or rectangular. Designers use similar sconces in interiors of different styles - the photo shows classic and modern apartments.
- Lamps with lampshade on a bracket. This category is represented by a variety of products: from traditional options, such as Arte Lamp Aurora A1150AP-1CC, to original stylized items, like Arte Lamp Palermo A2053AP-1BR. Often sconces are made in the form of a pair of lamps united by a common base.
- Sconce with hanging lampshade. Similar options are used to decorate a work area, mirrors or a place for reading books. The downward facing lampshade creates bright, directional lighting - providing excellent visibility even in a dark room. A bright representative of the category is Arte Lamp American Diner A9366AP-1AB.
Beautiful sconces from this series are shown in the photo.
- Wall models of directional light. The design of the products has a movable holder, which allows you to adjust the flow of light in the desired direction. Models are indispensable assistants near the dressing table, near mirrors in the bathroom.
When choosing stylish sconces for the wall, carefully study the shape of the diffuser. Closed lampshades create soft lighting, while open lampshades emit a powerful stream of rays directed downwards or upwards.
Wall lamps change the atmosphere in the room - make it romantic and cozy, or, on the contrary, bold and extravagant.

Minimalistic forms
Interior fashion 2020 is flexible, following the main trend - individualization of space. And where there is individualization, there is a free choice of shapes, sizes, shades and materials. Choose what you like: a vintage chandelier with crystal pendants, a wicker lampshade, strict classics, futuristic design, minimalism.
The only things that have finally gone out of fashion are the pointedly industrial lamps in the form of water pipes and lanterns, and the “spider” chandeliers, which could be found in every third design project in 2017.
5 mistakes in apartment lighting
Lighting in the interior can be called “the weather in the house”: well-chosen light will make the apartment a cozy oasis in a big city, and lighting errors can ruin even the most successful interior.
No matter how freely fashion behaves, if you follow the fashionable collections of lamps for 2020, you will notice that trends are shifting towards clean, laconic forms. Simple geometric shapes, a minimum of decorative details, matte, glass and metal surfaces are in fashion.
Minimalistic low-hanging lamps, cluster lamps and traditional shapes that come from classic interior styles, for example: the laconic geometry of Art Deco, which is again in trend in 2020, look trendy.

Profile lamps
Profile luminaires are used to organize local lighting in residential and commercial premises. LED lamps are used as a light source, which are “packed” into a profile of various types of installation: built-in, surface-mounted, suspended, etc.. Often, built-in light profiles are combined with suspended ceiling systems.
This type of lighting fixtures is characterized by the following advantages:
- serial production of finished structures;
- the LEDs are mounted on an aluminum circuit board, and not on plastic LED strips (as in other types);
- the presence of a full-fledged diffuser, which is aimed at supplying light flux at a certain angle.
There is only one possible drawback - adding a cheap and low-quality diffuser to the lamp. It prevents the full output of the light flux, up to 25% is lost. You can often find specimens on sale that hide up to 40%.
Modern profile, tracking and line lamps are used not only in the interior, but also in industry, street lighting, and architectural structures.

Where are the lamps installed:
In the living room - in the reading corner, next to the armchair (an alternative is a floor lamp), and also on both sides above the fireplace mantel. In the bedroom - on both sides of the head of the double bed and next to the dressing table. In the nursery - next to the bed and desk. In the bathroom you need to illuminate the washing area, and in the kitchen - the cooking area and dining area. In the corridor, you can fix a row of lamps at a height slightly higher than human height, and opposite the mirrors to visually expand the space.

Bronze, crystal, Murano glass
Types of lighting fixtures that can be introduced into a modern interior:
- Electric lamps. They appeared relatively recently; previously gas, kerosene, and oil were used. Expensive antique table lamps https://shebbyantik.ru/catalog/interer/osveshchenie/nastolnye_lampy/ and chandeliers, classified as luxury goods, were made of bronze, wood, Murano glass and richly decorated.
- Antique chandelier. Creates the main overhead light and sets the tone of the entire room. It can be a little pompous with crystal pendants for a classic room or simple, with lace shades, modernized from a gas lamp.
- Wall lights. They complement the main light and create a cozy atmosphere of a candlelit evening. An interesting solution is an antique two-armed shape with light bulbs imitating real candles. Later versions are miniature glass lampshades that are attached directly to the light bulb.
- Antique floor lamps. They are installed near an armchair or sofa and create a pinpoint island of light for reading. A laconic wooden leg and a fabric lampshade with fringe or a metal dragon and a Chinese pattern of a floor lamp will highlight the originality of your home.
- Table lamps. Intended for desktop lighting. Brass antique kerosene lamps with green shades will remind you of Soviet libraries, and an elegant Tiffany-style fantasy lamp will be passed down from generation to generation.
