Today, interior projects include the use of many different decorative elements. In particular, to decorate modern kitchens, namely countertops, elements such as baseboards are often used to give the item a more complete shape. In addition, the kitchen plinth also performs a purely utilitarian function, closing the gap between the countertop and the wall (wall panel).

As a rule, kitchen baseboards are made from safe, chemically neutral materials, and their aesthetic appearance helps the countertop to be visually seamless with the wall or other surface. In addition, the use of baseboards also has practical significance: thanks to the installation of such products, food particles will not fall into places that are difficult to reach. In addition, protection against moisture ingress is provided.

Execution materials

Skirting boards for furniture and countertops can be made from various materials. When choosing this element, it is recommended to take into account the design characteristics of the countertop. If the structures are made of natural wood, it is better to select edging made from natural raw materials, the color of which matches the shade of the main coating. But wooden elements absorb moisture and moisture-based contaminants and are susceptible to mechanical damage. To increase durability, products made from natural raw materials are treated with varnish coatings.

No less popular are wall rims made of natural or artificial stone. Granite, marble and acrylic look great in various interior solutions. Countertops and baseboards made of natural or artificial stone are characterized by resistance to damage, moisture or high temperatures. They are durable, environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

For a stainless steel surface, it is necessary to select a edging that will be resistant to various influences. An excellent solution would be an aluminum baseboard. Such structures can be mounted next to the stove, as they are resistant to high temperatures. Aluminum plinth does not require labor-intensive maintenance and is easy to clean from dirt.

One of the most popular options is plastic framing. This type of plinth is available in various colors. Using a rich palette, you can imitate any surface: stone, metal, wood.

An excellent solution would be the PERFETTO-LINE plastic wall trim, which can be harmoniously combined with various design designs. Such products are characterized by resistance to moisture, temperature fluctuations, mechanical damage, and do not require labor-intensive installation.

Types of kitchen skirting boards

By visiting the virtual showcases of the Amix online store, everyone has the opportunity to buy skirting boards for tabletops, choosing the product according to the profile shape, type and size. Kitchen baseboards can be made from:

  • plastic;
  • aluminum;
  • wood;
  • artificial stone;
  • ceramic granite, etc.

Plastic skirting boards are the most popular because they are characterized by high performance, environmental friendliness and aesthetics at a fairly affordable price.

According to their shape, the profiles of kitchen plinths can be flat and rectangular, triangular, curly, rounded and the like. The choice of product length, of course, depends on where it is intended to be installed. The average height ranges from 2 to 20 cm.

In our online store you can order different types of skirting boards for countertops, which you can select on the pages of the electronic catalog.

Purpose and types of plinths

As already mentioned, a kitchen plinth is needed to close the joint between the wall and the countertop, which appears after installing the kitchen unit.

This kitchen element is necessary because... it protects furniture from moisture and subsequent swelling, accumulation of pieces of food and other small particles behind the tabletop, which are very difficult to remove.

Since the kitchen has its own microclimate, debris and crumbs that fall behind the set very quickly begin to decompose and rot, which leads to an unpleasant odor, the appearance of mold and fungi, and possibly big troubles - for example, the appearance of cockroaches.

The baseboard, in turn, will provide the kitchen with sterility, cleanliness and freshness, which is what this room should have. Photo:

In addition, a kitchen plinth will help you hide defects in the built-in kitchen and make its position visually more even, which is not always the case, because the walls in apartments are often uneven, or the design of the room makes it impossible to install the kitchen evenly and cracks appear - they can be closed with the help of a kitchen plinth. baseboards.

This device will allow you to tightly seal the joints of the countertop with the apron and tightly connect the surface so that the furniture organically fits the kitchen design and complements the interior.

If you bought a set to order, then the kit includes a kitchen plinth, as well as the necessary fittings for its installation: plugs, parts for joining.

These skirting boards are made to match the color of the kitchen unit and, as a rule, from the same material. If you buy furniture yourself, then you will have to choose the baseboard.

It is better that the device you buy matches the color and material of the entire kitchen.

That is, if your countertop is made of a material that imitates stone, then the fittings should be selected from a similar material.

For wooden coverings, the material is chosen in accordance with the type of wood from which the countertop is made.

The third option is to choose fittings that match the texture of the furniture - for example, a metallic color that matches the handles on the kitchen drawers.

In this case, you can choose a ready-made aluminum plinth, or a plastic analogue that has the desired color.

Aluminum and plastic are the most popular materials for making kitchen baseboards.

They are used if for some reason it is impossible to select fittings from a similar material.

Plastic skirting boards are made from polyvinyl chloride using the co-extrusion method.

First, the plastic is melted and then mixed with the desired pigment to obtain the desired color, or the surface is laminated using special films that imitate the texture of the materials under which the baseboard is made.

The most common types of textures that imitate plastic fittings are stone, wood or metal.

The coatings also vary in texture and can be matte, glossy, shagreen or smooth.

Plastic material is resistant to moisture, inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

Such structures come in many colors and sizes, and it is very easy to install them yourself, since the plastic is easy to cut and bend.

It is recommended to choose this option in cases where the wall is uneven, or you need to apply it to complex shapes.

Aluminum plinth is more durable because... protected by an oxide film located on top.

Thanks to it, it is resistant to various types of loads and the application of harmful aggressive cleaning agents.

An aluminum baseboard will serve as long as a kitchen set, because... It has no service life at all. The most important advantage of aluminum fittings is heat resistance.

These skirting boards are chosen when you need to insulate a countertop near a stove or oven. The price of aluminum materials is more expensive, but overall it is still very affordable.

Installation of skirting boards

  • Preliminary measurements and purchase of necessary materials. It is necessary to determine the exact dimensions of the plinth, how many plugs and corners will be required.
  • The base must be grease-free, clean and dry. The preparatory work includes removing the layer of glue, grease and dirt if there was already a plinth in this place.

If the countertop is made of natural stone, the holes for the dowels must be drilled in advance. Use a drill for concrete, the same self-tapping screws are used - 16 mm.

    Cut the decorative trim panel using a paint knife or hacksaw.

Why do you need skirting boards for countertops?

Main functions

A skirting board skillfully attached to the tabletop is an obstacle to the penetration of small debris and food waste into the cracks. This helps avoid the appearance of unpleasant odors. You are completely protected from the invasion of cockroaches, who are in search of something to eat, often in crevice spaces. The kitchen is not afraid of mold either.

A nice addition is the fact that the cavity of the plinth can be used as a plane where electrical wiring is laid. This way you will be able to hide everything unsightly from strangers, while ensuring easy access to sockets.

How not to make a mistake in choosing?

Even in the last century, no one had ever heard of such a product as a plinth for a kitchen table. Of course, in wealthy families such devices were installed even then, but now purchasing a skirting board is not difficult at all - you go to a hardware store and make the necessary purchase.

Due to widespread distribution, manufacturers are forced to compete with each other and fight for consumers, taking into account important quality criteria. Today, the cost of a product depends on the level of functionality, the appearance of the baseboard, the material from which the device is made, and also takes into account the preferences and tastes of customers.

Deciding on the form

When deciding on the size and shape of your future purchase, focus on the size of the gap formed between the table and the wall, as well as the material from which the tabletop is made.

Pay attention to the thickness of the table, which can vary from 28 to 38 mm. Of course, the last sample refers to more durable furniture.

How to attach a baseboard to a kitchen countertop: let's start with self-tapping screws

If you have a postforming tabletop (chipboard in plastic) or a working surface made of natural wood, a plinth made of PVC or aluminum is suitable for it. In this case, fastening will be carried out using self-tapping screws.

IMPORTANT . Never use nails when working on wood or other types of countertops. They will not provide adequate adhesion, and over time you will end up with a swollen work surface.

PVC and aluminum moldings consist of two parts. The frame is attached to the working surface, and a decorative element is installed on it.

When installing a plinth on a tabletop with your own hands, follow these recommendations:

  • You need to use galvanized or brass screws. Oxidized, phosphated (they are black) are not suitable, because... they rust.
  • The pitch between screws should be no more than 30 cm.
  • If the molding needs to be trimmed, this must be done before screwing the base.

Advice. To minimize the likelihood of moisture getting into the joints, it is recommended to use a sealant during installation. An ordinary sanitary one will do - transparent or any suitable color.

And yet, there is no need to fasten the plinth to the wall with self-tapping screws. The maximum is to coat this space with sealant.
