DIY NEW YEAR'S WREATH FROM PAPER

Today, many families have adopted the Western tradition of decorating their apartments for the New Year holiday with Christmas wreaths. This decor always looks great and lifts your spirits. There are many options for creating wreaths. A similar decoration can be made from living branches: juniper, ordinary twigs, pine, cypress, oak, spruce. But sometimes it is created from quite unexpected materials. Of course, such decor can be easily purchased in a store. But it’s much more interesting to create a wreath of branches with your own hands. In this case, you can create truly unique and festive decor.

History of tradition

Before we consider how to make a wreath of branches with our own hands, let's find out who came up with the idea of creating such a decor.

Hamburg resident Johann Hinrich Wichern was the first to decorate his home with such an element. He took in children from impoverished families. During Lent, the children constantly pestered their mentor with the question: when will the long-awaited Christmas come?

To make it easier for children to count down the days until the holiday, Johann made a wreath. This item was made from a wooden wheel. It was decorated with 19 small red candles and 4 large white ones. Every day one candle was lit on the wreath: if it was weekdays, then a red one, and if it was a Sunday, then a large white one.

The locals really liked this wreath, and they quickly adopted the tradition. This is how this amazing Christmas attribute has survived to this day.

New Year's wreath: idea made from birch branches

How to make a New Year's wreath with your own hands is a question many people ask and think that it is very expensive and requires a lot of effort and time. But in reality this is not so, for example, you can make a really magnificent wreath from simple branches. Birch branches are best suited for this, because they bend well and keep their shape perfectly, and this decor looks very expensive and presentable.

What do you need:

  • Birch or other thin branches
  • Dark wire, approximately 0.60 mm
  • Pliers

How to do:

Remember that it is best to choose thin branches, they will bend better and it will be much easier for you to work with them. First we need to give the shape of the ring, now is also the time to decide on the size of your decor. Choose what diameter the wreath will be. If you want to hang such a wreath on a wall or on a door, then the ideal size would be 25-30 cm, and if just for decoration, then opt for 15 cm. To fix the branches and give them shape, use a thin wire, cutting it with small pliers. Remember that at this stage it is important to fix everything well, because this is the frame and foundation of the future decoration.

If you are thinking about how to make wreaths for Halloween with your own hands, then also pay attention to this option, because it is really universal, you can make several small ones and decorate them with cobwebs, small bats made of cardboard or small plastic pumpkins. It will look interesting and very unusual.

Don't forget to prepare all the branches in advance so as not to be distracted by cutting them while assembling the wreath itself. Continue assembling the wreath, simply laying branches in a circle and periodically securing them with wire. After you have completely assembled the entire wreath, give it a more accurate shape; to do this, simply secure all the branches that stick out in different directions with wire, but do not cut them off, otherwise you risk ruining the product. You also don’t have to do this and leave everything as it is, let some naturalness and naturalness of this wreath remain.

And if you also say a few compliments and words of praise, and then hang a wreath on the door together, his joy will know no bounds.

We invite you to watch a video with a small master class on creating a New Year's wreath with the hands of a child:

What is used for decoration?

When planning to make your own twig wreath, consider what decorations you will use.

Most often used for Christmas attribute:

  1. Cones (pine, spruce). Natural decor looks impressive. Sometimes the cones are sprayed with a golden or silver spray.
  2. Berries. The most popular are viburnum, rowan, and rose hips. The wreath can be decorated with fresh or dry twigs with berries.
  3. Nuts, fruits. Dried pieces of lemons, oranges, and tangerines look original. Any variety of nuts can be used for the wreath. Twisted (dry) orange peel can be a wonderful decoration.
  4. Spices. Dried cloves and cinnamon sticks will provide an incredible aroma on New Year's Day.
  5. Sweets. You can even decorate the wreath with cookies and candies.
  6. Bows, ribbons. Traditionally, Christmas attributes were decorated with plain red bows. Today, striped and checkered ribbons are used for decoration.
  7. Small Christmas tree toys. Small bells, birds, stars, snowmen, angels, and balls will add a special charm to your wreath. In addition, decorate it with Christmas tree tinsel and beads.
  8. Candles. This decor is suitable only for those wreaths that are placed on a horizontal hard surface.

Christmas wreaths in the interior

December has come again, and everyone’s favorite New Year, holidays, gifts, festive feasts and just a wonderful time of year are just around the corner. One of the ways to prepare for the holiday is decorating your home. As a popular attribute, I will mention a wreath, which can, of course, be either autumn or Easter, but now the one we most need is Christmas. I will not delve into the history of this symbol now. It seems that it was invented by a Protestant pastor (or, alternatively, a Catholic priest), so it is believed that the fashion for this decoration came to us from the West. There is another point of view that from ancient times our Slavic ancestors wove wreaths from branches and herbs, brought them home, the wreaths dried and became a talisman for their home and family. I think that the popularity of New Year's wreaths is played not so much by the religious or traditional component, but by the fact that it is simply beautiful! What are these charming wreaths made from? From pine branches and garlands, from fresh and artificial flowers, Christmas tree decorations and tinsel, sweets and gingerbread, soft toys and balls of thread - from everything that the master’s imagination suggests. However, today I want to talk about those wreaths that I like the most - modest, discreet, made from natural materials, still retaining the smell of a forest or garden, and also admire photographs of interiors where such wreaths are used. The most traditional wreaths are, of course, made from pine branches, cones and dried berries and fruits. They usually decorate the living room and harmonize in style with the decorated Christmas tree.

You can weave a wreath from evergreen branches and hang it on the chandelier above the dining area

Wreaths look wonderful on a fireplace or mantelpiece along with other New Year's items.

In addition to the living room, with the help of wreaths you can give a New Year's look to the bedroom,

kitchen,

hallway and stairs.

And even a stern, brutal man can choose a completely ascetic decoration for his office.

And here the wreath looks funny in a composition with retro skates. (I have these too! They bought them for me in the 80s. Here’s an idea for use, well, except for their intended purpose).

The lucky owners of their own estate can traditionally hang wreaths (one or a pair of the same) on the front door

Or decorate the entrance area.

You can also not hang the wreath on the wall, but put it on the table and put candles (but do not leave it unattended, such compositions are a very fire hazard).

In short, Christmas wreaths are a cute and stylish holiday decoration! I congratulate all the masters and guests of the Masters Fair on the upcoming New Year and Merry Christmas!

Frame making

Having prepared all the necessary elements, we will begin to create a wreath of branches with our own hands. The master class will help with this.

The New Year's wreath must be very durable. That is why you should carefully approach the manufacture of the frame.

Such an element can be created in several ways:

  • twist the vine and secure it carefully;
  • crumple newspapers, give them the shape of a ring, and tie them on top with threads;
  • use an old watering hose;
  • tie twigs of willow, bird cherry, buckthorn;
  • cut a circle out of cardboard (make a smaller hole inside);
  • use a hose from under an old vacuum cleaner;
  • use a disposable plate and cut a round hole in the middle of it;
  • purchase a ready-made foam ring;
  • Apply dry grass, shape it into a ring and tie it tightly with thread.
  • make a circle out of wire (you can use an old wire hanger).

DIY fabric Christmas wreath

The New Year's rush has already begun!:) I suggest you urgently start decorating your home. In this master class I want to show how you can easily and simply make a very cute textile Christmas wreath.

So, materials: 1. Fabric 2-3 types. Cotton is better. The consumption is small, the strips are about a meter long and of different widths. 2. Felt in several colors. I used the soft one for the “fir branches” and the hard one for the decoration in the middle of the wreath. 3. Synthetic winterizer or synthetic padding, holofiber. You can just tear out a cheap pillow, there will most likely be holofiber there. If you suspect that the pillow is feather, then you should not open it 4. Ribbons, ribbons, laces, beads, bead needle, sequins, etc. Many people have them at home, and you can buy them at any handicraft store. 5. Threads, needles, scissors, Chinese stick, ruler, etc. That's all you need! Add a selection of New Year's songs, a bag of tangerines, and before you know it, you'll create a small New Year's miracle with your own hands. Go! That's all you need for the wreath base.

We cut out strips 8, 6 and 5 cm wide and 80 to 90 cm long (the wide strip is the shortest). Then, when assembling the wreath, the length of the strips can be adjusted. The finished wreath, by the way, is approximately 25 cm in diameter. Fold the strips in half lengthwise with the right side inward, iron them (optional, but it’s easier to stitch), pin them and sew with a 5 mm allowance. Sew along the long side and one of the short sides.

We turn the resulting parts inside out and stuff them with holofiber/synthetic fluff. Not too tightly, because you will need to give these “sausages” the shape of rings.

In the photo above you can see that we overlap the thickest and shortest sausage to make a ring. We try to bend the cuts. Stuff the remaining 2 sausages and carefully sew up the open edges.

We cut 2 sheets of soft felt into a “snake”, and then cut the pine needles in the photo, I think it’s clear what I mean.

Now we wrap strips of “pine needles” around the sausages, distribute the turns along the length so that it looks beautiful, and secure them at the beginning and end with two or three stitches.

We wrap the first sausage around the base ring, make sure it is beautiful and symmetrical, and sew the ends of the sausage to the base ring. Now our wreath has a front side and a back side (where it is sewn on at the back).

Similarly with the second sausage, only we don’t just wrap it around the base ring, but weave it between the sausages. Sew the ends to the back of the wreath. We see that everything is symmetrical and beautiful.

Now let's take on the central decoration. Here's what it needs:

I cut out a circle with a diameter of 8 cm (there is a bulge on top for fastening), and adjusted the star to the size of the circle. We sew the star onto the circle (aka ball) using an overlock stitch, or a needle stitch, or a chain stitch - whichever you prefer! Types of seams can be viewed on the Internet. Sew bindweed along the edge of the ball with small stitches. We decorate the center of the star with sequins and beads, and the rays with just beads. It is clear that you can decorate as your heart desires, I am only offering an option.

We take a beautiful ribbon, wrap it around the wreath (preferably in the place where the seams were), make a loop and sew it on. Then we make a hanger for the ball from the lace, hook it to the ribbon that is wound around the wreath, tie a knot, and hide the knot under the ribbon. All! The wreath is ready! I hope my explanations were clear. I think kids could be involved in making this simple wreath. Well, below is a photo of the predecessor of the wreath with a ball - a wreath with a bell. Also a very New Year's theme :)

Decorating the frame

We continue to consider how to make a wreath from branches with your own hands.

So, you have a finished frame. The next stage is decorating it with branches. You can use live pine needles. Pine branches are perfect; spruce branches look more elegant.

If you want your creation to last a long time, then make an artificial wreath from branches with your own hands. You can use this decor next year, slightly diluting the composition with new elements. You can find an old artificial Christmas tree in almost every home. Don't rush to throw it away. After all, you can make an excellent New Year's wreath with your own hands from fir branches. It is in no way inferior in beauty to its counterpart created from living elements.

To decorate the frame, you need to cut the branches. It is very convenient to perform this action using pruning shears.

The branches are attached with an overlap. The lush part should cover the wood of the previous one. Also, arrange the branches so that the frame is not visible. Strong threads can be used for fastening. An excellent solution is to use wire. This will allow all elements to be firmly secured.

As you can see, making a New Year's wreath with your own hands from fir branches (both live and artificial) is a simple task.

  4. You can wrap the wreath with ribbons and tie them into bows. If it is necessary to secure the strip firmly, then it is glued to the base wreath.

Form the wreath so that the side parts are not overly saturated with ingredients. Don't weigh it down. All massive elements must be placed either at the top or bottom.

We offer an option for decorating a New Year's wreath with flowers:

New Year's wreaths made from newspaper tubes, paper and napkins

Do you read a lot of periodicals? Do you have a lot of waste paper at home? Then don't waste your time. Take everything you have, use your imagination and start making a Christmas wreath. Add napkins and colorful paper to sheets of newspapers and magazines . By skillfully combining all these elements, you can get a very beautiful, and most importantly, unique New Year's wreath.

In this option, it wouldn’t hurt to add a few family photos to the wreath. And if they are also black and white, that’s absolutely perfect.

What do you think of this newspaper tube wreath?

Sock wreath

It's hard to believe, but things like socks can be good material for an Advent wreath. You don't need to spend too much time to get excellent results.

For example, cut off the toes of your socks and randomly string them onto a frame, which you will connect at the end. This frame should be made quite thick so that the socks do not hang down too much. Then it’s easier to put a stocking on it, the ends of which you tie to give the wreath the shape of a circle .

By the way, socks can be replaced with stockings. The main thing is that both are colorful.

We offer a wreath option using knitted socks, which are wrapped in the form of “roses”.

Attaching decor to the door

So you have made a wonderful DIY Christmas wreath from branches! But now a new question has arisen: how to attach this masterpiece to the door?

There are several ways:

  1. Make two wreaths of exactly the same weight. Take a long ribbon. Tie one end to the wrong side of the first wreath, and attach the other to another Christmas attribute. Throw the ribbon over the door. The first wreath will be on the outside of the door, and the other will be on the inside. Secure the tape at the top with masking tape. Nobody will see him anyway.
  2. If your door has a peephole, you can secure your masterpiece as follows. Take a strong fishing line and tie or glue it to the wrong side of the wreath. Throw this structure over the door, approximately as described above. But the second end of the fishing line should be secured around the door peephole.
  3. A fairly simple method of fastening is to use suction cup hangers. They can be purchased at a hardware store. With these hangers you can easily attach the wreath to the door. If your decor is light, then you can get by with two pieces. It is recommended to hang the wreath by the top and bottom.
  4. You can use double-sided tape. This is the easiest and best option. One side of the tape is glued to the back of the wreath. Then you need to remove the protective film and secure the product to the door.

Master class from the designer

Designer Igor Linnik invites us to make a small New Year's wreath with our own hands.

For the base, a ring cut out of thick cardboard is used.

It needs to be wrapped in wrapping paper, crumpled into a rope.

Secure the paper with threads.

After this, you can begin to carefully wrap the branches using the same threads to the base.

When the entire wreath is filled with branches, it can be decorated and hung on the door, where it will delight the eyes of all passersby.
