It protects from light and from extraneous sounds, and simply makes the space feel more intimate, and therefore more comfortable for sleeping. The canopy in the bedroom was used even before our era: not only in rich, but also in poor houses. The poor covered the baby's cradle with linen, and the rich decorated their sleeping place with expensive materials. Nowadays, such a canopy can be made for both adult beds and children's beds. This article explains how to make a canopy with your own hands, what types, fabrics and frames of canopies exist.

Such curtains in the bedroom above the bed protect against insects, bright light and noise. The canopy also retains heat: if you live in an unheated house, this can be a lifesaver on cold autumn nights. In addition to the practical function, the canopy also has an aesthetic one: a canopy made of beautiful fabric over the bed looks very elegant.

Interesting: the word “canopy” itself means “expensive silk fabric from Baghdad” (“Baghdad” is translated into Roman languages as Baldacco). In Russian, the word appeared in the time of Peter I and did not mean a canopy, but rather expensive oriental fabrics imported from the countries of the Middle East and Central Asia.

What types of canopies are there?

Before installing a canopy, it is worth finding out what types of such canopies exist. It is very important to choose exactly the variety that is suitable for your bedroom.

If the bedroom is small, then it is better to choose an arched canopy. This is a semicircle of pipes, the ends of which rest against the wall. The fabric is hung on the pipes in the same way as curtains are usually hung on a cornice.

If there is a lot of space in the room for sleeping, then you can install a canopy around the perimeter of the bed. In this case, vertical posts are placed in each corner of the bed, and a horizontal structure is attached above the bed itself, on which the fabric is already hung. You can use ordinary window cornices rather than pipes as fasteners.

A “crown” canopy will also be conveniently located in a spacious bedroom. This is a round pipe fixed to the ceiling through which the fabric is pulled.

For a small room, a single pipe mount is suitable: it is fixed in the middle of the bedroom and the canopy fabric is thrown over it.

Interesting: originally a canopy was a canopy made of fabric on a wooden frame and poles. Such canopies appeared in the ancient East - they protected from the sun. They can be seen on ancient Persian reliefs: there they are always canopies over the throne or bed of the ruler. In ancient Rus', a canopy was called a canopy, and it was usually erected in churches. The inside of the entryway was painted with gold stars on a blue background and the symbol of the Holy Spirit, a white dove, was placed in the middle.

How to choose fabric for a canopy

The fabric for the canopy is, in fact, what the canopy itself is made for over the bed. You will look at it every day before going to bed, so it is very important that you are completely satisfied with the choice.

Tip: a bedroom with a canopy will look especially harmonious if the fabric chosen for the canopy is repeated on other textiles, for example, on window curtains, pillows or bedspreads.

Lightweight fabrics are well ventilated and easy to wash. These include chintz, linen and even cotton. They will flutter beautifully in the wind and lull you to sleep with their shimmer before bed.

Heavy fabrics protect from bright light and noise, and they also retain heat (imagine autumn in an unheated country house). These are tapestry, jacquard and velvet, and washing these fabrics is usually a lot of hassle. Depending on the style of the bedroom, the material is decorated with tassels, flounces and fringe.

Interesting: In Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, canopies on four supports were made mainly for protection from the cold: heavy fabrics retained heat well, because bedrooms were not heated at that time.
A little later, in the era of Louis XIV and Louis XV, fabrics for canopies were made of brocade and decorated with gold embroidery and lambrequins. At that time, canopies were also made from velvet, satin and damask. From the East Indies to Europe came the fashion for printed cotton canopies and slightly cheaper French toiles. Nowadays such canopies can be seen in the Chateau of Versailles.

Design

As mentioned earlier, the holder is assembled from a tripod, a ring and fasteners. Canopies can be installed in different ways depending on the structure of the loop. If it is solid and does not separate, then the woven material of the canopy is tied using special ribbons or Velcro. If the specified parts are not initially included with the product, then it is quite possible to sew them on yourself. The loop of the holder itself is often complemented with spectacular lambrequins or bows.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with: Modes and functions in the washing machine

If the composition of the product provides for the possibility of removing the loop from the tripod, as well as separating its ends, then the upper part of the textile, which should have special pockets, is pulled over the loop tendrils. The formed structure is attached with screws to the side of the arena, and then the fastening points are masked using plugs.

Choosing a frame for a canopy over a bed

The canopy frame can be of three types:

  • fabrics on supports;
  • design with suspended consoles;
  • arbitrary textile compositions.

The most popular design is the canopy on a frame. The frame is a wooden or metal structure, and it is usually not only a support for the canopy, but also a decorative element that emphasizes the height of the ceilings. The frame also emphasizes the bed itself: its size and finish. Lovers of luxury often decorate the frame with forged elements or carvings.

An arc-shaped frame is an option for those who avoid excesses. The arched frame with its shape provides the drapery with softness and smooth lines, and also simplifies installation: fastening does not require additional supports.

A canopy can also be made using two crossbars : one secured at the head of the bed, and the second parallel to the first on the other side of the bed. These two crossbars perpendicular to the sleeping place form support points through which a piece of fabric is thrown.

Advantages and disadvantages

What is the advantage of such a “curtain” and what should you pay attention to in advance? How to attach a canopy to a baby crib? Difficult or simple? To start:

  • You can choose any canopy. At the moment there are many designer and simpler options.
  • The bed model can be any. Rectangular, round or unusual shape.

Non-standard option for a boy.

  • The design is quite simple to assemble. The tripod is lightweight and safe.
  • The tripod is usually very stable and does not require screws to be attached to the floor.
  • Various mounting options: wall, ceiling, bed.

These are the main advantages of a canopy. What are the disadvantages of a canopy bracket for a crib or fasteners?

  • Possibility of scratches. If you have changed the location of the tripod or hook several times, it is quite possible that scratches will remain on the wall or ceiling. They need to be hidden or decorated with something.
  • Lightweight design. If a child pulls the tripod or shakes the crib, he may topple the entire structure on himself, since it is not particularly stable. This is more of a minor nuisance than a serious minus.

How to hang a canopy over a bed: options for attaching to the frame

There are several fastening techniques:

  • loops (wide strips with Velcro);
  • eyelets (metal rings on fabric with a uniform indent from the edge);
  • corrugated tape (ribbon with loops sewn to the edge of the fabric).

Loops can be used on any fabric. Don't forget to sew on Velcro, as this will make the fabric easy to remove for washing and ironing. Hinges are used on tubular and narrow beam structures.

Eyelets are usually used for thick fabric. They are suitable for narrow pipes on which rings are strung.

Corrugated braid also includes hooks onto which the braid loops are placed. This option is suitable for those who like to live and make everything themselves: you can easily create such a canopy with your own hands.

There are several options for how to put a canopy on a holder:

  • Cornice. Not the most durable, but a convenient and simple option.

You can also purchase them separately. In this case, they are attached to the arena on a bracket with a ring on top. Unlike canopies for adult beds, the crown canopy is fixed not on the ceiling, but on the crib (or playpen) itself. Baby canopies are usually made from voile or fine mesh and can be attached to both girls' and boys' beds. A closed canopy gives the baby a sign that it is time to sleep, and thus he gets used to the correct daily routine.

Advice: if your child has allergies, then it is better not to buy a canopy for him, as it accumulates dust.

When the child grows up a little, you can make a cozy house out of a canopy. It is very important when a person has his own space, and children often create a small world for themselves in their corner.

A beautiful canopy will also suit the interior of a teenage girl’s room: on a bed under a canopy you can hide from the adult world and keep secrets with your girlfriend. Such a canopy will add comfort, but will not contribute to the feeling of an enclosed space. It is better to choose dim colors so as not to cause anxiety in the child. Pastel shades will give the interior a fairytale-like quality that a child will most likely like.

How to hang a canopy on a crib

A canopy makes any baby crib more luxurious, comfortable and beautiful, and therefore, almost every mother tries to decorate it for her baby with a pastel-colored canopy. In most cases, the crib is sold separately from the canopy mount, which means parents have some questions. How to hang a canopy on a crib? In which direction should the fastening be made - on the side or on the back?

How to hang a canopy on a crib
You will need

  • Canopy, canopy mount, tools (drill, screwdriver)

Instructions

1. It all depends on how the baby’s crib will be located. If it stands against the wall along its length, then it is better to place the fastenings for the canopy on the same back side. But if the crib is located close to the wall, then, of course, the more preferable option would be one in which the canopy bracket is attached specifically to the backrest. Both design methods look great and make the baby’s “nest” very comfortable. Typically, canopies in pink tones are traditionally chosen for girls, and blue shades, respectively, for boys. True, clear beige, yellow, pale orange and light green colors look no less luxurious. 2. The canopy mount is a metal hollow tube (stand) and a metal rod, bent into an oval and having curved “whiskers” that are inserted into the hole in the stand. The stand is screwed to the top crossbar of the crib supported by screws. However, practice shows that it is still better to use a drill to make holes through which to tightly attach the base for the canopy. Otherwise, the ever-present growing baby, pulling the edge of the canopy, risks being injured by broken metal rods. 3. There are different methods for hanging a canopy on a crib. It itself can be sewn in such a way that it provides various devices for hanging it. These can be special rope ties with which the canopy is tied to a metal oval. It is also possible that the canopy is simply thrown over a metal oval. Particularly optimal, aesthetically consistent and correct is hanging the canopy using another method. To do this, pull out a metal oval from the stand and string a canopy onto it through the mustache, gathering it into lush folds. After this, the “whiskers” are inserted into place. The canopy for the crib is ready.

If you are planning to hang a canopy on a crib, this is a positive decision. A canopy is not only beautiful, but also practical. Under a light cover, the baby will feel more comfortable and comfortable; this tea curtain creates his own personal world for the child. The canopy will protect the child from mosquitoes and flies in the summer. If your baby's crib is in your bedroom, then a canopy will help him not to pay attention to the light from the lamp. In addition, dust will not settle on the child. Making a canopy for a baby crib with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first.

How to make a canopy for a crib
You will need

  • Pre-selected fabric (organza, curtain or velvet fabric would be amazing); various decorations for the canopy, if required (for girls, you can take ruffles or lace); a frame, one that you can either order in a workshop or make with your own hands; sewing accessories for fabric processing.

Instructions

1. When we hear the word “canopy,” images of oriental beauties constantly begin to appear in our brains, reclining on luxurious beds and covered from prying eyes with luxurious canopies made of expensive fabrics. Make such a marvel yourself, bringing a little oriental touch to the atmosphere of your favorite bedroom or daughter’s room magic is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Let's remember labor lessons at school. 2. The first thing we need is to choose the fabric for the canopy. The fabric must be either dense and heavy, or very light, approximately airy. Materials such as tapestry, velvet, and organza are perfect for an adult bedroom. It’s cooler to transform a child’s bedroom with the support of natural fibers. Calico or silk fabrics will be very appropriate here. For a canopy, a 1.5-meter width of fabric will be enough. The length of the material should cover the bottom of the crib. As usual, canopies that cover three quarters of each height of a children's bed are very popular. Some people make the canopy all the way to the floor. You can also see short canopies on sale or on the Internet, but they are only decorative, and they have no functional benefit. Hem the fabric over each area so that the edges do not fray, we process it and decorate it, if desired and possible. We sew special fastenings onto the approximately finished canopy, so that rings can be attached to these fastenings, as a result of which our canopy will move in and out. 3. You can use lace or fringe to decorate the canopy. You can sew on appliqués or ribbons. You can easily trim the bottom of the canopy with braid or flounce of a small width. Ready-made accessories in the form of flowers, stars or butterflies will be a godsend for those who have just begun to “make friends” with a needle and thread. You can buy them at virtually any sewing store, and they will look stunning. You can decorate the canopy with colored garlands, but this is more suitable for larger children. Babies can become overstimulated by excess light and have difficulty falling asleep. But such a canopy in the room will invariably give the feeling that the child has found himself in a fairy tale. If you purchase fabric with a printed pattern, then most likely no additional manipulations in the design will be required. Such a canopy itself will look luxurious and expensive.

How to make a canopy for a crib4. The frame is the hardest part. Ordering from a workshop that does forging is an ideal option. But you are also allowed to make this design yourself. The frame for the canopy is made in the same way as the frame for curtains in the bathroom. But in our case, it is necessary to bend the metal rod in a semicircle or in the shape of the letter “P”, string rings on it, and then attach it to the wall or to vertical supports. 5. But it will be easier to make a canopy from wood. A thick beam is attached to the wall, and along its edges there are slats that are perpendicular to the wall. For wooden frames it is better to use lightweight fabric. 6. There are several options for attaching a canopy over a baby's bed. You can cover the entire crib, protecting your child from mosquitoes, dust and prying eyes. It is allowed to close the crib only at the baby's head. You can make a royal canopy, the fastening of which will be located around the perimeter of each bed. It all depends on your dreams and probabilities. 7. In order to get the 1st option, the frame is attached either at the head of the crib, or in its central part, or the frame is attached to the ceiling or chandelier. If you are interested in mounting it to the ceiling, then you will definitely need to purchase a special hook, and the frame itself should have a round or oval shape. The hook should be perfectly screwed into the ceiling. Otherwise, each structure can fall and injure an infant. Instead of fasteners, you can use a small gymnastic hoop.

8. In order to cover only the headboard with a canopy, the frame must be securely secured above the baby’s head. The frame should be quite high, otherwise the structure will not look aesthetically pleasing. This canopy is often used for older children. It allows the child to sleep comfortably one-on-one with his dreams and at the same time will not limit him in space during the waking period.

9. If you want to make a canopy over a royal-type bed, you will need to attach the frame directly to the ceiling. For older children, you can purchase a bed with more built-in supports. Unfortunately, they cost quite a lot of money. These beds are considered by many to be “antique” styling. Attaching a canopy frame to such beds will not cause any problems. There are also ceiling structures where the fabric is attached to slats and strings. And finishing is done with plasterboard or wood.

How to make a canopy for a crib
10. Creating a canopy for a crib with your own hands is also significant because you don’t need to strictly follow the rules, but can turn on your imagination. You can make a shaped frame for your baby, one that will not only protect the baby from external influences, but also create for him a fairyland in which he can fantasize. It is permissible to make the frame in the form of a cloud, but it is permissible to make the frame an arc and prefer a multi-colored material, the one that will eventually become a rainbow over the child’s crib.

How to make a canopy for a crib11. The main thing to remember when constructing a canopy is safety precautions. It is necessary to ensure that the fastening of the frame of your canopy is strong and strong. Then the interior of the bedroom will be beautiful, and your sleep will be peaceful and glorious. And what form it will be depends only on your taste and wishes. Note! When attaching a frame made by yourself, you should remember the safety rules. In order for the sleep to be healthy and sound, and the interior to be delightfully suitable for the baby, the fastening of the frame must be correct and not pose a danger to the child’s health. Helpful advice: You need to choose a shade of fabric that matches the atmosphere of the children's room. If you are making a canopy to protect your baby from mosquitoes, carefully check to see if there are any gaps along the edges of the crib.

When a small person appears in the family, along with great happiness and joy, turmoil and care come into the house. All the parents’ efforts go into creating comfortable conditions for the newborn; the more comfortable he is, the greater the peace and joy in the home. After birth, the baby spends most of his time sleeping, which is why you need to positively choose a crib for your baby , having studied all the options of the product.

How to choose a crib for your baby

Instructions

1. It is desirable that the crib be made of natural wood, smooth and coated with non-toxic varnish or paint. It is also possible to ask the sales representative to show a hygiene certificate for the product. Its presence indicates that the product corresponds to the quality presented. 2. After a few months, the grown baby will try to stand up, firmly rocking the baby bed. The crib should not lose its original solidity. The safety of the child depends on its stability. 3. You should check in advance that the crib does not have sharp corners or other strongly protruding elements. The shape of the structure should be streamlined so that the baby does not accidentally get injured. 4. The product must strictly be made like a rocking chair (have runners or a pendulum mechanism that provides rocking). This difference from ordinary beds allows you to rock a baby without special efforts. 5. It would be better to abandon the model with a solid bottom and opt for the option with a slatted bottom. A mattress that is closed at the bottom will inevitably rot because a small child will wet it more than once or twice. In the case when the bottom is made of slats (with small intervals between each other), free air ventilation is ensured, as a result of which unpleasant odors and excess moisture do not accumulate. 6. All the side partitions of the crib, as usual, are made of rods. It is very important that the intervals between them comply with safety standards (5-6 cm), and exclude the slightest possibility that a little person’s hand or head might get stuck there. If you follow these simple tips, you can easily choose a crib for your baby - harmless and strong , which will serve regularly for many years and delight the baby with its convenience. Many parents will ask, why is this necessary? What is the use of decorating the bed if the child is already not deprived of toys. There is a point. Decorating a baby crib has not only aesthetic, but also corrective functions. Your baby spends most of the time in bed, and decorations will help develop his attention and memory.

How to decorate a crib

Instructions

1. While the child is small, buy a four-poster bed. A graceful canopy will serve to protect the baby from insects, light and permissible drafts. But as soon as the baby has grown, ruthlessly get rid of the canopy. The child does not comprehend the threat and can, clinging tightly to the fabric with his hands, bring this entire colossal structure down on himself. In addition, a fabric curtain serves as a good “dust collector,” and dust is known to cause allergies. Therefore, if you bought canopy crib 2. Decorate the headboard, if it is solid, with appliqué or, if you have the time and ability, paint it with comical animals. Just use water-based paints for this. They are non-toxic, odorless and therefore are best suited for use in a children's room. When the baby begins to relate more rationally to the world around him, he will like to look at brilliant pictures. Use these decorations for your baby's development in the future. Come up with fairy tales about the drawn characters and tell them to your baby at night. It is permissible that when a child grows up, he himself begins to invent stories about the heroes he loves. 3. Buy a mobile and hang it above the crib. Shiny, spinning toys will attract your baby's attention. Children really like rattles. You will also purchase special plastic toys strung with a strong elastic band. And hang it, attaching it to the sides of the bed. 4. How to decorate a crib ? The easiest method is to buy beautiful bed linen. You can, as desired, fantasize at length on the topic of decoration, but without excellent linen, the appearance of the crib will still not be very aesthetic. Do not purchase duvets and pillows for a small child. Fluff can cause allergies. Your own imagination will tell you how to decorate a crib . Show off your crafting skills and your little one will fall asleep in the most authentic bed ever made.

A canopy over the bed gives the sleeping area a luxurious look and at the same time makes it comfortable and protected. Your children will probably like this, as they will feel like they are in a fairy-tale oriental palace under the canopy. Parents can easily build it over the crib.

How to assemble a canopy for a crib

Instructions

1. Choose fabric for the canopy. For a child's bedroom, light, natural materials in peaceful colors are ideal. The width of the fabric should be about 1.2-1.5 meters. To determine the length of the cut, measure the perimeter of the bed. The length of the fabric for the canopy should be one and a half to two times longer. 2. Fold the bottom edge of the fabric one and a half centimeters and sew. Provide the top edge with eyelets. To do this, purchase ready-made rings (at the rate of 1 ring per 15 cm of fabric). Fold the upper edge of the canopy so that the width of the strip exceeds the diameter of the grommet by 2 cm. Place grommet tape between the layers of the folded strip and secure it with an iron. Mark identical 15 cm sections with a pencil or felt-tip pen: the rings will be located at this distance from each other. Cut circles from the fabric for the eyelets (the hole should be a couple of millimeters wider than the eyelet) and insert the fasteners, pressing them until they click, which indicates that the halves of the eyelet are secured. 3. It is also possible to use another fastening method - to make a drawstring at the top of the canopy, the width of which will slightly exceed the width of the rod at the base of each structure. 4. Make the frame of the canopy from a metal rod bent into a circle of a suitable diameter. It is also possible to use a U-shaped frame made of metal or wood, attached to the wall at the head of the crib. Attach the canopy structure using metal furniture fasteners to the ceiling or wall. 5. If you have chosen a frame mounted on the wall and equal to the perimeter of the bed, a fabric one and a half meters wide will suit you, which will reach the tier of the mattress. If you choose a suspended ceiling canopy in the form of a circle, make sure that the length of the flowing drapery is enough to stretch it to the corners of the bed and secure it by tying it to the legs with ribbons. Table of advantages and disadvantages of canopy

FlawsAdvantages
Another dust collector, and dust contains a lot of bacteria and even mites, which can cause allergic reactionsFor summer time it is perfect as protection against mosquitoes (as well as flies, and indeed any insects).
The canopy fabric must be removed, washed and ironed at least once every two weeks. And the fastenings should be wiped once a week. Such cleaning of the structure takes a lot of time and effort. The dense fabric of the canopy protects from the sun, noise and cold. If you sleep in an unheated room, then a canopy will save you on cool nights.
A canopy should not be constructed in small rooms, as it will visually reduce the space and clutter it up.A convenient design solution for zoning space: for example, if the bed is in a room that is used as a living room during the day.

Choosing fabric for a children's canopy

Dense fabrics better protect the child, including from noise and cold. This is a good choice if the crib is in the parent's bedroom: you can go about your business and not disturb the baby. Lightweight fabrics are more airy, not as bulky, and do not attract dust as much.

Chintz

Chintz is the simplest and most budget-friendly option, but at the same time comfortable for small children. It is from this that I most often sew light clothes for newborns, because it is completely hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. This is an absolutely safe fabric that does not cause irritation, breathes and has good hygroscopicity. The colors of chintz can be absolutely any, with all kinds of patterns and prints.

The disadvantage of chintz is its fragility, which is important for a canopy that needs to be washed regularly. From time to time it will have to be replaced with a new one, but this is unlikely to be expensive due to the low cost of the canvas.

Fine linen

For centuries, linen fabric has been endowed with sacred and healing properties, used for the treatment of illnesses and protection. And now it is one of the most environmentally friendly, safe and natural fabrics. It perfectly allows air to pass through, keeps you cool even on a hot day, easily removes moisture and dries quickly.

Linen is more expensive than chintz, but it is much more wear-resistant due to the natural structure of the fiber. Even in ancient times, without the delicate modes of washing machines, it was possible to preserve its structure and properties for a long time. But for a canopy you need to choose the right fabric so that it is thin and light enough.

Despite all the apparent lightness of silk, such a canopy is quite dense, so it protects the child well from cold and drafts. And in summer, cool, smooth fabric saves you from heat and stuffiness. But the silk canopy will cost accordingly - this is one of the most expensive options.

Silk requires delicate handling, but it is much stronger than cotton. Natural thread is not afraid of fungus and mold, and in itself is considered the most durable and second only to nylon. The smooth silk canopy allows air to pass through perfectly, so even in a completely closed crib there will be a comfortable microclimate.

Organza

Organza is best suited for light and airy summer canopies. Initially it was made from the finest silk threads, but now viscose and polyester are used for this. Depending on the structure, organza can be matte or shiny, chameleon, reaper, jacquard or sprayed.

Such a canopy is inexpensive, but looks impressive, does not wrinkle and is quite unpretentious. Keep in mind that organza is translucent, so it is not suitable for a dense closed canopy. This is more of a decorative solution for decorating a children's corner, and at the same time protection from dust and insects near an open window.

Flannel

Warm and cozy flannel is not the most obvious material for making canopies. But it is durable, soft, delicate, breathable and protects from the cold, so it is perfect for the winter. Depending on the main fiber, flannel can be wool, wool blend or cotton.

It is from flannel that diapers, baby vests, rompers and caps for newborns are often sewn. This means that it is completely environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and safe for the baby from the first days of life. At the same time, it is quite durable and resistant to wear, so it can easily withstand regular washing.
