What should a student's desk look like?

Even though today we no longer write letters or spend hours working on papers, the desk will never cease to be relevant.

A desk is more than just a piece of furniture. This is the place where children do their homework and adults work with important documents. The main requirement for a desk is that it should be comfortable enough for work.

Why should you buy a desk?

A desk for a schoolchild is a very necessary thing. The table should be large enough to comfortably place books, an atlas, laptop or computer on it and so that nothing distracts from your studies.

Also, the height of the table should not be too high or, on the contrary, low. Regardless of age, the table should be comfortable and the chair should be correctly selected for it.

To make sure that a desk is a necessary thing, just look at a photo of a desk on the Internet. It fits well into the overall design of the room. You definitely shouldn’t give up this piece of furniture.

Tip 4: Practicality of the table

The practicality of a desk is determined mainly by its functionality and the material from which it is made:

  • A table made of MDF or PVC will last longer, especially if your child wants to draw on it, which cannot be said about a varnished surface;
  • It is not recommended to choose a desk made of plastic for a schoolchild, as it is considered toxic;
  • A glossy tabletop can create glare from the sun or a table lamp. This is unpleasant for the eyes, so it is better to opt for a matte surface;
  • It is better to choose legs without wheels so that they are stable, otherwise it will be difficult for the student to concentrate if the table moves;
  • It is better not to purchase a table with sharp corners that can cause injury. If your table is equipped with such corners, you can put special anti-traumatic rubber attachments on them;
  • A computer is important for a student, as it may contain a weather diary for schoolchildren, a schedule, or important scanned notes.
  • When choosing a desk, consider the space for the monitor, which should be at least 60–7 centimeters from the child’s eyes, which is especially good in corner models.

What types of desks are there?

The desk can be of different shapes:

  1. Desk with drawers.
  2. Corner desk.
  3. Desk with shelves.
  4. Table transformer.
  5. Computer desk.

In exceptional cases, a computer desk and a desk can be one table. But you shouldn’t do this if your child spends a lot of time studying. Harmful computer study can cause enormous harm to a child's health.

An ideal desk for working at a computer. Work on mistakes

Dear Habr audience, Not long ago an article was published on Habr about a computer desk with adjustable height, “The ideal desk for working at a computer.” In the comments to the article, Khabrovsk residents expressed many comments and advice, most of them practical.

Taking into account the general interest, activity and “advancement” of Habr’s visitors in this matter, the developer had the idea to provide everyone with an analytical mind and creative potential the opportunity to take part in the criticism of the second modification of the table, so to speak, v2.0, at its stage design. And then the final product will be presented to everyone, taking into account constructive criticism and suggestions. Any constructive criticism is welcome, but, first of all, there will be an attempt to take into account and implement those ideas that can technically be implemented by means available to mere mortals, i.e. Chubais’s nanotechnologies are not yet available to the manufacturer, electric Whack-Whack-Transformations in the style of “Autobots Forward!” - a rather expensive and difficult pleasure to install, and adjusting the heating of the feet via iPhone is not yet in the plans, although the possibility of attaching a heated footrest can be discussed if there is a need for it.

So, based on the main comments to the previous article, and comments received from the few but already owners of the table, the following changes are provided:

1. The table in the first modification had a narrow tabletop and a pull-out shelf: Table top with dimensions of 130 cm (length) by 60 cm (width) Pull-out shelf - length 70 cm, width - 30 cm. Many people spoke out in the comments against the pull-out shelf.

Design changes: - the pull-out shelf for the keyboard has been eliminated, - the width of the tabletop has been increased by 10 cm to 70 cm (width). — the height of the box under the table, where the shelf went, was reduced (the box cannot be removed completely - it gives rigidity and strength to the structure, and it is also possible to hide wires from equipment on the tabletop in the box).

2. Fixed monitor stand – constant height 40 cm (from the table top to the center of the monitor). Convenient for standing work, unusual for sitting work.

2.V. Design change: Stand with adjustable monitor position (height only), i.e. the monitor moves up and down in the range of 10-15 cm. There are, of course, developments like Ergotron, which can do all kinds of different things, but they also cost accordingly, so the emphasis will be on “budget”, but at the same time simple and reliable solutions.

So:

(Second modification)

Also below is a photo of the first version of the table, what it looks like in “real life” (the photo with the girls remains in the previous post;)

Further wishes: height, shape of the tabletop, location of holes in the tabletop, and even color - everything is brought up for discussion in an open dialogue in the comments.

You can even suggest what price ceiling you think is reasonable. I hope teenage users will refrain from infantile comments in the “give 2 for free” style.

All comments from this site will be monitored by the developer and promptly, whenever possible, commented on.

PS

We sketched out the first version with modifications in Sketchup. — Tabletop 700*1350 — The counter with gas lift is moved back — 15 cm to the rear edge of the tabletop and 50 cm to the front edge of the tabletop (the figure below shows the distance along the leg — 45 cm, but at the top the tabletop protrudes another 5 cm further than the edge of the leg, in total from the edge of the tabletop to the counter - 50 cm). — The corners at the front of the table are rounded, at the back they are left at an angle of 90 degrees. In general, taking into account the comments, it looks something like this. As soon as the details of the monitor holder are drawn, it will be added to the sketch.

Desk with drawers

An ordinary table is not a very comfortable thing, even if it is made very well. In order to have all the necessary things at hand, it is better to buy a desk with drawers.

The boxes should be positioned so as not to get in the way. Typically, drawers are placed under the table on the side or directly above where the chair sits. The drawers can also be arranged as a small cabinet on top.

Cabinets are usually not made too large, the main thing is that they fit stationery, paper and other things.

Children's table location

More recently, caring parents, trying to provide their child with maximum natural light, placed a table near the window in the children's room.

However, this table arrangement also has some disadvantages. In particular, low-quality window frames can lead to drafts; central heating radiators will be blocked by furniture and will not allow heat to pass through.

And the top shelves and add-ons on the table will still hinder the natural lighting of the work area.

Therefore, when choosing the optimal position for a child’s desk, you don’t have to rely on the location of the window in the room. The table can easily be equipped with a high-quality table lamp.

Corner desk

A corner desk is a great option for small rooms. In such rooms, furniture is placed so that it does not interfere with movement.

But a corner table for studying is not the best option, even though it looks very beautiful and even too interesting. A children's desk is a serious thing, so choosing a table must be approached very responsibly.

Color scheme for children's tables

The color palette used to decorate modern children's tables is very diverse. The choice of color depends on the baby's personal preferences.

It is important to take care of this, because the child will not only have to play happily behind it, but also do boring schoolwork.

Of course, ideally, the product in the children's room should be in harmony with other pieces of furniture.

Why shouldn't you buy a corner desk?

Has a negative impact on the student’s posture. During classes, it interferes with normal lighting. A corner table can have either drawers or shelves.

You can buy a corner desk if both parts are large enough so that one part has enough space for studying, and the other part can accommodate a computer or a shelf.

Despite some disadvantages, a corner table is quite inexpensive compared to other options.

Workplace in the bedroom: how to choose a table and chair?

Large computer desks, especially asymmetrical ones containing many shelves, drawers and add-ons, are called “interior killers.” Such furniture is good only for offices and, possibly, for children's rooms.

For the bedroom you should choose something more traditional and elegant. For example, a console table, a classic desk, a bureau, a secretary, a hanging structure, etc.

If you need additional storage space, you can complement your desk with a chest of drawers, shelving, cabinet or wall cabinet.

The table is selected to match the color of the bed, cabinets, and wardrobe. Or, conversely, they make him stand out from the general background. Tables painted with colored paint look interesting. A bright and cheerful work area creates positivity. But if it's difficult to concentrate on work, prefer something neutral.

A banal office chair on wheels will not be appropriate in every bedroom. There is no point in limiting yourself to niche (office) furniture, especially since the choice of chairs today is very diverse. It is important that the seat and back are ergonomic and comfortable. The chair itself can be wooden, metal, plastic, with or without leather or fabric upholstery. The main thing is that it matches the interior in style and mood.

Desk with shelves

A desk with shelves is a convenient option for studying and working. The shelves should be fairly small, but spacious.

  • Shelves for the bedroom - modern ideas for use and current combinations with interior design (125 photos and videos)

You can put not only books and notebooks on the shelves, but also flowers and other decorative elements. Shelves allow you to avoid cluttering the space on the table and make it easy to get all your things.

The ideal option is a combined option with shelves and drawers. Things that you don’t want to show to everyone can be hidden in drawers, and decorative elements, on the contrary, can be put on display.

Also, such desks with shelves look very good and allow you to create beautiful accents on designs.

How to properly organize a workplace for a schoolchild

A properly organized student’s workplace not only creates a comfortable atmosphere for doing homework, but also affects the child’s general condition. That’s why it’s so important to take care of creating a comfortable school corner in your home.

To do this, several factors are taken into account, the observance of which is extremely important for the child’s health:

Workplace lightingIt is known that the place where a student does his homework should be well lit.
Let's consider how the illumination of the space in the student's work area should be ensured:
  1. Daylight. A parent's mistake is to place the desk directly in front of the window. In cloudy weather there will still not be enough light, and on clear days the sun's rays will only interfere. It is better to position the table perpendicular to the window opening so that the light falls on the left if the child is right-handed and on the right if the student writes with his left hand.
  2. Desk lamp. As soon as the illumination of the workplace decreases and the child has to strain his eyesight, turn on the table lamp, which is installed in accordance with the lighting rules indicated above. At the same time, the lighting intensity should be comfortable for children's eyes. It is not recommended to use lamps that are too bright, since the light source is located close to the child and can only harm vision. A table lamp or wall lamp should be able to adjust the flow of light in height.
  3. Overhead lighting. In the evening, when the curtains are drawn, one table lamp is not enough, so you need to turn on the main light source in the room.
Correspondence of the student’s corner to his physiological parametersTo maintain good vision and correct posture, adjust the height of the desk and chair to match your child's height. In this case, the shape of the back of the chair should follow the contours of the student’s natural posture. Since children grow very quickly, the height of the chair must be adjusted. When sitting at a desk, the child's legs should be supported on a hard surface and bent at a right angle.
It is very easy to check whether the height of the table corresponds to the height of the child. Sitting on a chair and placing his elbows on the table, the child should reach his temples with his fingers.

The width of the table should allow the textbook to be placed on a stand at least 30 cm from the child’s eyes. In addition, when you need to install a computer on a table, the distance from the monitor to the eyes should be at least 60 cm .

Optimization of the surrounding spaceSince schoolchildren often forget where and what they have, everything they need for daily work should be located in a visible and accessible place. A well-thought-out arrangement of school writing supplies makes the task easier and saves the student’s physical and spiritual strength. When arranging a school corner, listen to his opinion and let him arrange everything necessary for classes in a way that is convenient for the child. You can make and hang signs describing the contents on closed shelves and drawers.
Psychological componentWhen equipping a workspace for a schoolchild, ergonomic components are put in first place. However, you also need to think about the psychological comfort of the future student. To prevent the child from being distracted from doing homework, you need to allocate his work corner into a separate space, separating it with a light screen or a small translucent partition from the sleeping and playing area. In addition, the child should not sit with his back to the door, as this creates psychological discomfort.

Height of the table and chair according to the height of the child:

Child's height, seeTabletop height from floor level, cm.Chair seat height, cm.
100 — 1154626
115-1305230
130-1455834
145-1606438

When planning to set up a workspace for a schoolchild, invite your son or daughter to participate in the process . The child will be more willing to study in a corner that he has landscaped for himself.
