One of the most difficult tasks is to make a soft headboard in the Chester style with your own hands. It differs in that the special texture is achieved using the so-called carriage screed.
It is not easy to do Chester style upholstery with your own hands, but it is quite possible if you work carefully and accurately. Here it is important not to make large errors, as this will ruin the entire back design. A Chester bed with a carriage frame is distinguished by smooth and soft, but at the same time clear geometric shapes.
To make a Chester headboard with your own hands, you will need all the same materials, adding buttons or other fastening accessories. A do-it-yourself carriage screed is made using a certain technology:
- It is necessary to make holes in the plywood or cardboard blank for attaching the fabric. They need to be placed at an equal distance from each other, following a certain sequence. The pattern and number of fasteners can be chosen to your taste; these can be small or large diamonds, squares or rectangles;
- Foam rubber or other soft material is adjusted to the size of the plywood sheet and secured using a construction stapler or special glue;
- The fabric is stretched very tightly over the entire structure and secured on the reverse side with staples. For better fixation, you can use glue;
- The upholstery fabric is stretched and secured to the back. If it is of a simple shape, it is better to start stretching the fabric from the center, moving towards the edges. You need to do the chester trim with your own hands very carefully so as not to damage the fabric or disrupt the chosen pattern;
- Buttons or other accessories (crystals, beads) are secured in previously prepared holes using strong threads and sewn to the headboard. You can secure the threads on the reverse side with glue and trim off the excess.

Preparing the base of the headboard

The basis for such a backrest will be a rectangular sheet of plywood (it is advisable to choose the one that is thicker), suitable in size. You will also need any thick fabric, beautiful fabric for covering, as well as soft filling.
How to make a headboard:
- Two layers of foam rubber are placed on top of each other on a plywood sheet;
- A simple thick fabric is placed on top. It should extend beyond the edges of the foam rubber and plywood by about 20 centimeters and be attached to the back side of the structure using a staple gun.
- In the same way, the main fabric that you have chosen for covering the headboard is stretched and secured on top.
- As a result, you will have a soft rectangular structure that will serve as a headboard. It is done quite quickly, the whole process can be completed in just a few hours.
Decorating the headboard
