Varieties
Before you move on to creating any product, you need to decide on its type, decide what it will be. It is worth considering that making a bed is not as easy as it seems.
Making a bed frame with your own hands is much easier than it seems.
You need to think through everything down to the smallest detail. There are two types of frame: wooden and metal.
Wooden frame
Wood is an environmentally friendly material. It has strength, durability, practicality, and beautiful appearance. In addition, it is easy to process.
Having made a bed frame with your own hands, you will receive an original product in a single copy.
For a beginner, this is the best option.
Metal carcass
The second type is metal, more labor-intensive, requiring basic knowledge of working with this material. You can ask a blacksmith and a welder for a few metalworking lessons. This will be required if you want to create not only a metal frame, but also diversify it with forged elements.
The metal frame is the most durable, although it does not always fit into the aesthetics of a child's room.
The iron base will last a long time if, after completion of the work, it is treated with anti-corrosion agents and painted. But it is worth considering that desire alone is not enough. You need to stock up on the necessary tools and equipment.
Advantages of laser cutting
Manufacturing furniture using a high-power laser allows you to obtain high-quality products that will last for many years. The technology has a number of advantages compared to conventional methods of manufacturing forged products:
- No deformation. This processing method does not involve mechanical contact between the product and the device. Thanks to this, it is possible to avoid the destruction of fragile and easily deformable parts.
- Performance. Material cutting lines do not require additional processing, so production time is reduced. Focused beam reduces waste. The dimensions of the parts are accurate.
- Reasonable price. Reducing the amount of waste and accuracy reduces the cost of manufacturing structures, which, in turn, is reflected in the price of the product.
In addition, do not forget about the advantages of forged beds. The material has mechanical strength, so it is not subject to deformation after processing and during use. The products are easy to care for. To remove dirt, a damp cloth is sufficient. A variety of designs allows you to get a product that will harmoniously combine with other interior items. Non-standard sizes will not be an insurmountable obstacle, since manufacturing is precise.
Assembly and installation of the bed frame
The process for a metal bed includes preparing blanks from pipes according to the diagram. They should be laid out on a flat surface. After this, fasten these parts by welding. It is important to correctly monitor the angle of the connection and maintain the desired degree. This will help give the structure evenness.
Using a grinder, you can make not only straight cuts, but also curly ones.
Next, the grinder is used. We need to make brackets. You can mount frames in them: two central and four side. The slope should be maintained at 5°. Using fasteners, connect the back and base using a welding machine.
The frame is assembled in the following way: make blanks. To do this, channels are cut and connected with an angle. Joints - weld. For the frame you need to set the back vertically. Make grooves in the bottom. To do this, use a drill of about 9 mm. When the holes are made, they need to be adjusted to fit the tenon with a file. There is a connection with the headboard.
Check all joints and corners for looseness before finally securing the structure.
Next, you need to weld the grid on which the mattress will be installed. It is welded onto the frame. The legs or base are welded. All protruding parts are cut off with a grinder and sanded. Paint is being applied.
Thanks to the roller, painting furniture will happen faster.
The wooden version begins with the fact that you need to retreat 1-1.1 meters from the wall. This will ensure the mattress is positioned correctly. Mark the sides of the end boards. When crossing lines, you need to attach supporting beams. Having created the frame, attach the headboard to it from the end side. To do this you need to use slats. Clean everything with a plane and remove dust.
Furniture must be varnished according to certain rules.
Cover all frame elements with stain. Then apply two coats of varnish. After this, you can attach slats or cross beams. It is better to use self-tapping screws. Attach the legs. These can be beams or boards for a solid base. Paint the product.
Choose quality materials for your bed.

- Production
The plant for the production of light metal structures (ZLMK) was founded in 2002. The plant began to produce commercial equipment, fences, and cages for various purposes from profile pipes and wire. In 2008, it was decided to launch the production of new products - metal beds. By this time, the company had assembled a team of competent professionals who already had sufficient experience in metalworking. We were faced with the task of organizing the production of single-tier beds and the production of bunk beds in such a way as to produce the maximum number of metal beds per shift in order to accurately meet the delivery time of goods to the buyer. In order for our metal beds to meet all the requirements for price, quality, convenience, speed of production, our engineers designed the beds in such a way that they are convenient for the consumer, have a margin of safety, are light enough for transportation, and are simple and reliable during assembly and disassembly . Good production speed can only be achieved by equipping production with high-performance equipment. Our machine park consists of modern machines of both domestic and foreign production (Italy, Japan, China, etc.). The machines were selected in such a way that they could easily cope with their task, even around the clock. For example, resistance welding machines for welded wire mesh can weld even 14mm diameter reinforcement, not to mention the 4mm rods that are used to make the decking of a metal bed. The pipe bender is capable of bending a pipe with a diameter of 60 mm and a wall thickness of 5 mm, so with its help it is very easy to bend a pipe for the sides of beds. Welding machines can weld thick channels and I-beams with a thickness of 20 mm. The polymer-powder complex can be quickly adjusted to coat metal in any color according to the RAL catalogue. The large reserve of technical capabilities of the machines is also due to the fact that, thanks to their reliability, they will not fail or break at the most inopportune moment, and the client will always receive their goods on time. But the main difference between our production is non-standard equipment for the production of metal beds, which has no analogues, as it was designed to a special order by the design engineers of our plant. With the help of this special equipment (templates), beds are manufactured quickly (50 bunk beds per shift), accurately and efficiently and can be adjusted to any models and sizes of beds. Beds from the manufacturer will always be cheaper in cost, in addition, communication with the supplier directly helps to resolve any difficult situations in the shortest possible time for mutual benefit. Bed decor
The metal version can be decorated with a beautiful headboard. To do this you need to use forged elements. If you have knowledge of blacksmithing, you can make elegant curls yourself. If you don’t have such knowledge, then you can order a ready-made version.
For decoration, use bed lighting.
To sketch the finished version, you need to use your imagination or choose a ready-made diagram from the Internet. For a wooden product, you can use a carved headboard. Carpentry talent can become an assistant in this matter. Painting in decoupage style will add personality to the bed.
You can create a floating bed.
To do this, you should use acrylic paints of different colors and napkins specially used for this procedure. Also, to give an attractive appearance, it is worth applying stain and varnish. This will make the wood a brighter color.
Get creative when decorating your bed.
If you choose a matte varnish, then it will ideally hide scratches. A glossy varnish will hide unevenness and add brightness to the product. It is also worth painting the product. This could be paint to match the natural color of the wood, or you should choose your own option to match the existing design of the room.
Decoupage is carried out on white surfaces, so we use white acrylic paint.
You can use fabric upholstery. To do this, choose a dense material with a pattern or one color. You can nail foam rubber under the fabric base. To attach, you need to use a furniture stapler or glue.
A furniture stapler is the same construction tool that is most suitable for use on furniture.
Features of the frame for a children's bed
A sleeping place for a child must meet the following indicators:
- Environmentally friendly. To create a frame, you need to use only natural material that does not contain toxins or harmful impurities.
- Structural strength. Don't forget that children are very active. They can jump on the bed. Therefore, it must meet these conditions and not bend under additional loads placed on it.
- Additional elements. For small children, you can attach side walls to the bed. This will prevent them from falling while sleeping.
- Comfort. The dimensions should be such that the child does not fall or knock on the walls during active sleep. When choosing dimensions, you need to take into account that children grow quickly. Therefore, an extra 30 cm in length will never hurt.
A wooden bed is environmentally friendly.
When choosing a base, it is worth taking into account the development of the child’s spinal region. You need to choose it in accordance with standards and orthopedic recommendations. How to choose elements for the frame:
- It should not creak;
- When choosing lamellas, you need to pay attention to their quality;
- The metal frame must be reliable, without rust or chips;
- When making wooden products, they should be thoroughly cleaned, varnished, and the structure made reliable.
Well, you are almost finished making your own bed frame.
You should take care of the quality of the fittings. If the bed is a linen drawer, then the lifting mechanism must be reliable and fixed to avoid injury.
Manufacturing
When everything is ready, the drawings have been completed, and the necessary calculations of materials have been made, you can begin the process of assembling the bed frame with your own hands. Everything is done according to plan.
- Transfer the future outlines of the frame onto paper. It is not difficult to make drawings of a bed frame with your own hands. But you can use ready-made ones. They are useful in that they help guide you at any time about the need to cut a particular block of the required size. It is strictly not recommended to do everything by eye, otherwise the result may be unpredictable.
- Next, you need to make markings on wooden blocks, boards, and slats using a pencil. Do not use a marker, otherwise it may remain visible after assembly.
- It is important to cut all the elements at once, and not cut off boards and bars as needed during assembly.
- After cutting the elements, be sure to treat the cut area with sandpaper to get rid of irregularities and burrs. We don't need them in bed.
- Mark the end walls, determine the location for mounting the support beams and longitudinal elements.
- Inside the side walls, mark the wooden slats that will serve as support for the frame. You can connect them with corners and self-tapping screws, or fasten a metal or wooden strip along the entire side wall, which will take the load.
- Be sure to provide longitudinal and transverse bars for the frame, which can strengthen the structure.
- Install a board with three slats to the front wall, which will serve as a headboard. The top part of the board can be left rectangular, or you can cut something more original and attractive out of it using a jigsaw.
- Having made and adjusted all the elements of the frame for the future bed, check whether all dimensions were correctly maintained according to the dimensions of the mattress. Do not forget that it is recommended to recess the bed by about 50 millimeters.
- Next, you need to perform an operation that will extend the life of the frame and ensure the preservation of its attractive appearance. To do this, all wooden elements are covered with stain and then varnish. Preferably in two layers.
- When the varnish is dry, begin assembling the components. Gradually you will be able to get a solid, complete structure.
- The pitch of laying the mattress support slats is usually 2-5 centimeters. Here it is important to determine what load will affect the bed in order to select slats of the right size and install them with the required pitch. The greater the load, the denser their arrangement and the greater the thickness.
What remains to be done? That's right, determine the ideal place for the bed, insert your orthopedic mattress inside the frame and enjoy the result of the work done.
Such an operation cannot be called complex. If you follow the instructions and rely on a competent drawing, even a beginner will be able to build a magnificent frame for his own bed. How proud will you be?! After all, everything is made by your own hands.

Pros and cons of making a bed yourself
Making your own bed is not as difficult as it seems. But it is worth considering that this product will be made to suit individual needs - this is its main advantage. But is it worth trying without experience? You need to consider the advantages and disadvantages.
There are many benefits to making a bed frame.
Pros:
- Saving money. Everyone has encountered the fact that a finished product sold in a store or salon costs much more than something made by hand. This is due to the markup for work, rental of premises for sale, and salaries for sellers. When the bed is produced on its own, then the cost is taken into account. You just need to spend money on the material.
- Originality and uniqueness of the product. Each result obtained will be unique. You can take a ready-made version as a basis and add to it several elements that your own imagination suggests. Then such a bed will ultimately be a unique product.
- Pride in handmade furniture. It is very important when you approach the manufacturing process correctly, preparing drawings, producing the bed itself, and finally you can see what has happened, then you can be proud that everything was done yourself. This is an opportunity to show your talents.
Be careful when assembling the bed!
Disadvantages: you need to be patient, have basic knowledge of wood or metal processing.
