Sliding interior doors - a practical solution in a modern interior

Depending on the chosen interior style, transitions between adjacent rooms can be designed differently. In small apartments, sliding interior doors are often used to help save space. The use of such models is especially important if the owners are not used to keeping rooms closed. Sliding interior doors can be very stylish; there are many varieties that differ in mechanism, material, color, and design. The choice is very large, and you can easily choose the appropriate option for a specific interior.

Sliding interior doors - pros and cons

Sliding interior doors differ from ordinary ones in that they open not in or out of the room, but along the wall. This solution was originally very common in Japan, where saving space is very important. Gradually, such a mechanism spread throughout the world, attracting attention with its originality.

There are a number of advantages that distinguish sliding interior doors.

  1. This mechanism significantly saves square meters. If a swing door “eats up” some part of the area, then a sliding door does not have such a disadvantage. It provides maximum comfort even in small apartments where space is very important.
  2. An interior sliding door can consist of either one leaf or several at the same time. This is not only very original and unusual, but also functional, and allows you to adjust the width of the doorway depending on your needs. Swing models cannot boast of such capabilities.
  3. Interior sliding doors can also act as an adjustable, convenient partition between rooms, and can also be used for zoning rooms. This is certainly very convenient for owners of studio apartments, in which it is necessary to fence off certain areas of the living space, even if only temporarily.

But we should not forget that there are certain disadvantages. These include a number of features of sliding doors in the interior.

  1. They significantly save space in front of the doorway, but due to their unusual configuration, they require space on the side of it, where the leaf will move. This is called a parking spot. If it is not there, then it will be impossible to install a sliding model. The clearest example of this situation is the doorway at the end of the corridor. Even if the design assumes that the canvas will be hidden inside the wall, it is not worth using inter-apartment or load-bearing ones for this.
  2. These models are not the best option for a child’s room or bedroom, as they make a characteristic sound when opening and closing. It is due to the presence of rails and rollers that run on them, and noise cannot be avoided.
  3. Sliding interior doors are much more expensive than swing doors, especially in cases where high-quality mechanisms were used in their manufacture.

Compartment doors (8 photos)

Interior compartment doors can be single-leaf, double-leaf, or cascade (in the latter case, the doors move not along the walls, but along permanently fixed panels). Guides (rails) can be located at the top or bottom of the opening. Combination options are also possible.

DIY sliding interior doors

Interior compartment doors (as in the photo) can be suspended, cassette, or hinged. Cassette units are retracted into a special wall niche. From the point of view of saving space, this is the best option: you can put furniture against such a wall, while in other designs you can’t put anything against the wall along which the canvas moves.

It is possible to install compartment doors yourself, but if you are not a master, it is better to entrust this to professionals: poor installation will lead to door jamming, excessive noise when opening, and premature wear of the roller mechanism.

Types of designs of sliding interior doors

There are four main types of sliding doors: standard, radius, accordion and compartment. They all differ from each other in their opening mechanism.

Standard sliding interior doors are the most common. They are installed directly in the doorway, and when opened, the leaf is moved to the side along the wall. Traditionally, they come in two types: single-leaf and double-leaf sliding interior doors.

Double sliding interior doors

Double sliding interior doors

The first option is perfect for small rooms where every square centimeter of space is important. Most often they are installed either between two small rooms, or between a room and a narrow corridor.

Single-leaf sliding interior doors

Single-leaf sliding interior doors

Double-leaf sliding interior doors are classically installed in more spacious rooms with wide doorways; the following photos show how the interior is transformed when the door mechanism is replaced.

Radius designs differ in that the canvas moves in an arc rather than in a straight line. This sliding door can be installed in a room with curved walls. Often, such models are used as space zoning elements; they look especially good in high-tech and fusion style interiors.

Folding interior doors , or “accordions,” differ from standard ones not only in their design features, but also in their appearance. They consist of narrow panels fastened together, which fold neatly when opened. Such sliding interior doors are very easy to use and fit perfectly into the decor, as demonstrated in the following photos.

The design feature of sliding interior compartment doors is that they are made not to the height of the doorway, but flush with the ceiling. These models are very convenient to use for zoning large rooms and studio apartments. Very often they are used to separate the kitchen from the living space.

Panoramic accordion door – transformable wall

A special system in panoramic doors. It combines options for moving the sashes, as in sliding systems, and the ability to open the door, as in swing systems. Such doors can be called parallel-folding. For the way the doors move, similar to the movements of bellows in an accordion, they are called accordion doors.

The maximum door height can reach 2.8 m, the width can be 6 m, the weight of each leaf can reach up to 100 kg. The number of leaves varies from 2 to 8. One door leaf is working, and the rest are folding. The working sash can act as a gate, and the folding elements can be moved to the other side. Also, the working sash can be folding and move along with the folding sashes.

Advantages of accordion doors:

  • Possibility of opening 100% of the door opening. All door elements are opening (leaf). They can move in one direction or in 2 opposite directions;

    Photo: example of an accordion folding door Roto Patio Fold, panoramic doors
    Photo: example of a folding accordion door Roto Patio Fold

  • Many different opening options allow the home owner to choose the most suitable one for himself.
    At the same time, you can partially open the opening from either side or src=»https://www.oknamedia.ru/uploads/ckeditor/pictures/15343/content_Panoramnye-dveri_-razdvizhnye-ili-_garmoshka__—10.jpg» class=» aligncenter" width="800″ height="587″[/img] Photo: version of the accordion door when the doors fold in two directions
  • A transforming wall unites and divides space. An accordion door is often used as a partition between two rooms. When closed, it looks like a glass wall. If it is necessary to combine 2 adjacent rooms, for example, for a public event, the doors can be completely moved. Two small rooms are transformed into one large one. After the event, you can return everything “to its place” again. It is very comfortable.

Cons of accordion doors:

  • Open doors on the sides (on one or both sides) occupy part of the living space;
  • Less light when the doors are closed . The maximum leaf width is smaller than that of tilt-and-slide and lift-and-slide doors. Therefore, for the same width of a structure with parallel-sliding portals, the “accordion” will have more vertical partitions, which reduces the flow of light and “breaks” the panoramic view. The number of sashes can be adjusted by their width. The wider the accordion sash, the more it will protrude beyond the plane of the frame in the open position, occupying the space of a room or street.

The main purpose of the folding system is to maximize the opening of the opening. A folding door is convenient for combining rooms if you use the “accordion” as an internal door. It is also convenient when the door is part of the facade. For example, home owners like to host a large number of guests who will move between indoor and outdoor areas. “Accordions” have become widespread in shops, cafes and restaurants, so that in the summer they can combine indoor and outdoor spaces for the convenience of visitors and staff.

Material for sliding interior doors

Most often for the manufacture of sliding interior doors they use:

  • tree;
  • glass;
  • MDF or fiberboard.

Wood is a classic option, but it is not necessary to make the entire canvas from this material. You can complement it with elements made of glass, fabric, plastic, and mirror inserts. The classic texture of wood is very beneficial, as it successfully emphasizes almost any interior style. Depending on the chosen design direction, it is enough to add forged parts, rice paper, inlay to the interior sliding doors, or leave the boards unplaned to get a model that fits perfectly into the environment; in a series of photos you can see various options for decorating the door leaf.

When the financial situation does not allow using natural wood for decoration, it can be replaced with other materials that are more affordable - fiberboard or MDF. Outwardly, they are almost no different from wood.

If a style such as minimalism, hi-tech or futurism is chosen for the interior, then a sliding interior door made of glass would be an ideal option. Such an advantageous element does not limit access to sunlight, making the room more spacious and bright.

I. Description

It is no secret that entrance groups with sliding doors, for all their rationality and simplicity, have one very significant drawback - even when one person passes, both vestibule doors open and a powerful flow of cold air is created into the room (and even with a small flow of people, these doors do not close at all ). Revolving (revolving) doors are designed to solve this problem - the problem of heat conservation and creating comfortable conditions near the entrance .
Automatic revolving doors are revolving 2 , 3 or 4 blades with an automatic drive . Thanks to their design, such doors, while remaining impenetrable to the cold air flow from outside, provide the necessary entry capacity, creating virtually no obstacles to the passage of visitors.

Our company sells, installs and services automatic revolving doors KVV AUTOMATED ENTRANCES INC company and is its official distributor in Russia .

KBB company is the world's largest manufacturer of automatic doors , founded in 1992. At the initial stage of its activity, KVV was a dealer of BESAM and was engaged in the sale of revolving doors in China. Having gained invaluable experience in the installation and maintenance of BESAM automatic doors, KVV began to develop its own models, using electronics and automation from world manufacturers (SIMENS, Panasonic, BEA, OPTEX, etc.).

Today, KBB AUTOMATED ENTRANCES INC is a large, dynamically developing corporation. Its production base is located on the territory of 3 large factories in Beijing, Shenyang and Ningbo and occupies a total area of about 150,000 sq.m. In the domestic market, the share of its products is more than 60% of the total volume of automatic doors produced in China. The quality and fundamental nature of its developments is evidenced by the fact that KBB is a supplier of automatic doors for the Beijing metro. The high quality of KBB products is recognized throughout the world and is confirmed by relevant certificates (European CE Certificate of Conformity, American UL Certificate and full certification according to the international quality system ISO9001:2000, ISO4001, ISO 9001), as well as

II. Model selection.

When choosing a model of an automatic revolving door, it is necessary to take into account the flow of pedestrians and the nature of the objects carried/transported through the door:

type of drive Diameter Bandwidth Application
Manual or automatic 1.8-2.2 m 30-60 people/min Pedestrians
Manual or pneumatic 2.4-3.0 m 60-90 people/min Pedestrians with luggage
Auto 3.2-4.8 m 90-120 people/min Pedestrians with supermarket cart

Security Features

Infrared detection sensor: 4 pieces of infrared detection sensors are placed above the revolving door on the canopy, when a visitor approaches, the radars are triggered and the door begins to rotate. • Anti Compression. 2 infrared anti-compression sensors are placed vertically above the entrance. The Revolving Door stops immediately when the anti-compression sensor is activated. • Anti Shock (Slowdown and Braking and Stop). The shockproof sensor consists of 6 pairs of photocells, which are located at the bottom of the movable doors or under the display case. A special shockproof non-contact sensor immediately stops the revolving door if the infrared beam encounters a stationary or moving object or a visitor in the fan-shaped sector. The first pair of infrared photocells slows down the rotation of the door when an obstacle or pedestrian enters their zone of action. If an obstacle or visitors are interrupted by the beam of the second pair of photocells, the brakes are activated on the door. When an obstacle or pedestrian enters the coverage area of the third pair of photocells, the revolving door stops immediately. • Contact vertical rubber buffers. When pinched between the vertical frames of the outer fixed arc-shaped part and the front vertical part of the rotary wing, the door immediately stops and reverse is activated to release it from the jam. • 2 pcs. infrared foot sensor Placed under the vertical rubber sensor to protect visitors' feet. • 2 pcs. Shockproof deceleration sensor Placed above the rotary wings to ensure the safety of visitors. • Safety relay. To monitor the vertical rubber buffer if this sensor exhibits problems. then the door will no longer work. to avoid squeezing visitors. • Instant reaction. If the rotation force of the revolving door leaf increases more than the programming parameters (adjustable) the revolving door stops immediately. • Non-contact instant response . When the rotary wing is up to a place less than 900mm with the vertical frame of the starting arc, then the control system controls the output driving force at one safe scale. This force conforms to the European safe standard, in order to have better anti-shock function and anti-compression for visitors. • Fire alarm. When a fire signal is received, the revolving door itself is set in a panic position for quick evacuation of people. • Emergency exit . When an emergency signal arrives at the control panel or you press the emergency “stop” button, the revolving door is automatically transferred to the evacuation position, then the internal sliding door automatically opens for free passage. In the case of KA022 Series 2 or 2w, when the revolving door is automatically moved to the escape position, the balanced leaves open. • Function of a disabled person . The door rotates at low speed to facilitate passage for a disabled person. • LED display - Self-diagnosis. Detects an anomaly code while driving and shows what operating mode the door is in. • UPS backup power supply . The backup power system ensures reliable operation of automatic doors for 30 minutes in the event of a power failure.

Operating modes

1. Lock: The door is locked. The revolving door is stationary and does not respond to radar signals. 2. Start from the "open" position : The rotary wings stop in the open position - when a command is received from the detection radar, they begin to rotate at normal speed. 3. Start from closed position: The rotary wings stop in the closed position - when a command is received from the detection radar, they begin to rotate at normal speed. 4. Continuous rotation. When there are no visitors, the revolving door rotates at a slow speed - when a command is received from the detection radar, the rotation speed increases to normal. 5. Step by step rotation in forward direction . Used for cleaning and service procedures. 6. Step by step rotation in reverse direction. Used for cleaning and service procedures. 7. Sliding interior doors partitions

In addition to their direct purpose, sliding interior doors often act as zoning elements when it is necessary to separate part of the room not only visually, but also actually. There may be several such cases.

  1. A children's room in which children of different sexes or with a large age difference live. Using sliding interior partition doors, you can easily turn one room into two smaller ones.
  2. Often the bedroom area allows for a dressing room to be placed in it, but there is no desire to build a partition. In this case, sliding structures will also help.
  3. In cases where the layout involves a very spacious kitchen, part of it can be separated for use as a dining room. Real separation is convenient because fewer odors generated during the cooking process will enter the dining area.
  4. In addition to country houses and city apartments, sliding partitions are used in offices, to separate a management office or a conference room.

Sliding interior doors are very convenient, have a lot of positive qualities and will fit perfectly into almost any interior, this explains their popularity.

What material is lightweight?

The range of factories in Italy and Russia also includes solutions that create minimal load on the fittings and are easy to use, no matter what their size. They are based on an MDF board combined with light coniferous wood. The advantages of lightweight sliding doors of this kind include low price with decent practicality.

In addition, they have wide decorative potential:

  • covered with veneer or plastic film, painted in RAL colors;
  • decorated with glass and metal inserts, moldings;
  • allow you to apply various effects - gloss, artificial aging, brushing, etc.

Designs of both varieties are included in the range of the Academy brand. The company provides professional services for their assembly and installation.

Mechanism

Sliding doors are a great opportunity to free up space and make a room more practical. The main component of this system is a roller mechanism, which is often installed at both the top and bottom ends.

This design consists of the following main components:

  • Guides. Made from aluminum or its derivatives. The shape of the product depends on the type of door leaf and the supporting systems used. These parts are attached both below and above the door leaf.
  • Roller system. It consists of several pairs of rollers, which are attached directly to the door itself. They are also located below and above the canvas. The shape and size of these devices can vary depending on the standard used by each manufacturer.
  • Please note that the lower rollers take the main load and also prevent the door from swinging in different directions.

    To reduce noise levels, many manufacturers make the working surface of the wheel from special types of rubber. Technically, sliding doors can be made independently from old canvas. To do this, you need to select the necessary components, and then attach the rollers to the frame. When everything is ready, measure the wall and fix the guides, inside of which the door leaf is placed.

    The installation process of such doors is clearly shown in the video below.
