Construction of Roman blinds: what types of curtain rods and mechanisms there are. Visual photos and diagrams

Peculiarities

The variety of roller blinds allows you to use them everywhere, fitting harmoniously into the interior. The comfort created with their help is incomparable to that which ordinary tulle can provide. But for most consumers, roller blinds are still little known, and this gap must be filled.

When choosing the best option in the store, you need to think not only about how it will look on the window and how well it will protect from blinding rays, but also about its mounting.

You will almost always have to hang a curtain on plastic windows, and this can be done in several basic ways.

How to assemble correctly?

Are all the components in place? You can start installation.

  1. Attach the box to the place where you plan to hang the curtains (doors, wall, ceiling) using clips. If it is a ceiling, be sure to use brackets, the size of which should be 4x5 centimeters. Secure the bracket using a screw and nuts.
  2. Check the availability of the roller blind components included in the kit.
  3. Assemble the structure according to the instructions.
  4. Decide where to install the curtains.
  5. Stretch the rolled sheet to the required height.
  6. Put on the control chain (raising and lowering the blade) so that the chain lock is “stuck” in the turning mechanism. This action will limit the unwinding of the rolled web.
  7. Install the curtain on brackets or holders.

Selecting a control method

The decision on the method of fastening is made taking into account the size of the window opening itself. Ignoring this point can ruin even the most excellent design. Roller blinds are relatively small and easy to use because they use carefully designed mechanisms.

They are divided into the following types:

A mini-cassette made of aluminum is inserted inside the guide - there are no special differences from the design of blinds. Roller blinds with a spring mechanism should not be confused with automatic ones: after all, they retract or unwind only due to the fact that they are mounted on inclined surfaces.

No electric drives are needed; the mini-cassette can be secured with a special adhesive tape that does not leave marks. Installs very quickly and there is no need to drill anything.

A full-length cassette differs from a miniature one in that the rolled curtain goes completely inside, and when unfolded it covers the opening, not just the glass. A suspended plastic chain provides relatively precise control of the blade.

The automated device is equipped with an electric motor, automatic control and remote controls.

Advantages and disadvantages

Spring mechanics, for all its external effectiveness, are not reliable enough. It is not for nothing that manufacturers provide a guarantee only for a certain amount of time. Springs wear out and fail especially quickly in a house where children can reach them. To bring the curtain to the required position, it is moved while holding the bottom edge.

In different models, this function can be implemented in one of three ways:

The handle, mounted in the bar, at the moment of rotation sets the stops of the guides in motion, and the canvas is wound onto the shafts;

There is a braking ball inside the shaft (to start unwinding, the curtain is slowly pulled down half a turn, and to secure it, pushed up until a click is heard);

There are catchy hooks along the curtain - this option is easy to implement and very reliable.

Roller blinds with spring control can even be installed on a ceiling, tilt-and-turn or attic window. The angle of its location relative to the floor does not matter.

An important nuance: the presence of a ball in the drum requires you to pull out and lift the blade very carefully. Excessive force can damage the sensitive device ahead of time.

Roller blinds with a chain mechanism are more practical than others. The fabric is wound onto a bobbin connected to a drum; a plastic chain and a retainer pass through its grooves. One has only to move the chains in the desired direction, and the rotation of the drum lowers the matter or raises it. It's simple, and anyone can use this device.

The negative side of this option is the low reliability of plastic parts: the latch breaks quite quickly, the material dries out, especially if it is heated by the sun. Sooner or later there comes a time when the chain breaks. But buying spare parts is not difficult. The length of the chain cannot be less than 2/3 of the entire length of the curtains.

In terms of the ratio of reliability and simplicity, the cassette type of mechanism has no analogues. It is possible to cover the entire opening, and it does not matter whether plastic, wooden or aluminum windows are installed in the house, since the device is fixed above them. It is possible to place the cassette on the frame itself, completely closing it off from prying eyes.

The advantage is that it is compatible with conventional curtains.

Reasons for installing roller blinds

By purchasing electric roller blinds, you can:

  • Control the roller shutter by pressing a button located on the wall unit or on the remote control.
  • When installing several roller blind systems in one room, arrange synchronization and centralized control process.
  • Use a timer. In this case, roller blinds can be configured to protect the room from overheating when exposed to sunlight.

Setting a timer for roller blinds

  • Regulate lighting and save energy in bright street lighting.

A motorized roller blind is not fundamentally different in design from a regular roller blind. The electric drive does not interfere with the appearance of the product or its design.

Features of automatic curtains and their types

Curtain control

Roller blinds are installed in small rooms and in spacious rooms of private houses, which is especially convenient when there is no need to waste time manually adjusting multiple systems. After programming, the device can be controlled as a whole by all windows or each separately.

Such electric drive designs have several more advantages:

  • The impact on the blade, when controlled with the same force, reduces wear on the material and fasteners.
  • The cost of installing the system is not too high, especially if you do it yourself.
  • Often this option is the only option for controlling sun filters mounted in hard-to-reach places: ceiling or roof windows.
  • The mass of roller blinds covering large windows is quite large. Manual adjustment quickly gets tiring; it is better to initially purchase a design with an electric drive.
  • A mini-cassette system has been specially developed for tilt-and-turn plastic windows.
  • The frame and guide structures are painted or made of laminated aluminum.
  • There are no control circuits or other unnecessary parts.
  • Easy installation, without drilling the frame.
  • The built-in electric motor operates on 12V voltage. This is a reliable mechanism with a lithium battery.
  • In 5-6 hours the battery is fully charged from a 220V AC network.
  • Modern multi-channel control panel.

Tip: The procedure for adjusting roller blinds using the control panel should be thought out in advance. It is easier to immediately install a centralized system than to add the necessary functions later, which can lead to an increased risk of technical failures of the system.

Diagram of the installation of roller blinds with electric drive

Automatic roller blinds can be controlled in two ways. Their features are presented in the table:

Control typePeculiarities

Remote

The curtains are controlled via a specially programmed remote control. You can place a timer on it, giving the remote control commands at a specific time. The system works on the same principle as an alarm clock.

Stationary

To close/open the curtains, just press the button installed next to the window, as in the photo.

Very expensive models of roller blinds with photocells are also manufactured, which react very sensitively to artificial or natural lighting, lowering or rising at the right moment.

Operating principle and methods of controlling electric roller blinds

All declared functions of automatic curtains are performed by a special motor. It sets in motion a pipe, which is used to wind curtains onto it.

Electric drive for roller blinds 220V

Tip: Before installing the structure, you need to carefully evaluate the weight of the panel used. If the fabric is too heavy and wound around a small pipe diameter, its walls may be deformed, which will lead to disruption of the entire installation.

Models are available where the motor is installed from the roll on the right or left, this eliminates some of the technical risks.

Motor installation

When you press a stationary button or on the control panel, the motor starts. This provokes the curtain to wrap around the pipe, or the panel to lower.

Curtain control from a stationary remote control

Tip: If automatic curtains make a lot of noise during operation, this only indicates poor quality of installation. Proper assembly of the structure works quietly without disturbing its owner.

The most popular control panels for electric roller blinds are presented in the table:

It can transmit a signal through walls and works within a radius of 35 meters.

Has a touch screen.

On blinds, the signal is transmitted via radio channels, which can be from 1 to 15, depending on the model of the radio remote control.
Radio switch for blindsRoller blinds are activated when you press this switch.
In this case, no wiring is required - the automatic blinds are activated from a distance.
Wired toggle switchThis is a classic option for operating blinds.

Fixation

Any type of such mechanisms winds or unwinds the canvas, fixing it in a given position. The rotation axes are attached both above and below the window, sometimes even moving simultaneously with the roll, the outer edge of which is fixed.

The fabric can be wound onto the shaft either directly (the roll cannot be seen) or in the reverse way (in which the roller blinds go tightly to the glass).

When smooth movement and reliable fit to a roof window (or when ventilating a regular window) are required, guides are used. Flat guides prevent the bottom bar from deviating from the desired path.

The disadvantage of this solution is the ability to use them only on flat areas. Where the surface is not ideal, U-shaped guides with a profile of increased rigidity are installed.

Thanks to them, the ends of the material will close hermetically and let in a minimum of light.

Magnetic fixation of the lower slats when fully opened is a characteristic feature of innovative roller blinds. When they are partially unrolled, the fabric is held in place by vertical lines (open or located behind the fabric).

An electric motor is needed only in special conditions - in large halls, with a very high ceiling, on a stained glass window. Then mechanized rope drives, controlled remotely, can reveal all their “talents”. In ordinary homes, using them is a waste of money.

The design of the mechanism, as we have already seen, can be very different. And its operating principle slightly affects the dimensions; the size of the suspended roll is much more important.

Since the winding shaft is just a hollow aluminum tube, it is not allowed to bend under the weight of the fabric. A cassette placed below will help to pull the canvas onto the glass from bottom to top.

Using roller blinds divided into two rolls, you can leave a gap between them if necessary. Closed control systems (with a box that hides the control elements) are more expensive, but also more reliable.

The base material does not deform, reducing the risk of sagging. We emphasize that no matter what mechanism for lifting the roller blinds you choose, it should work without a single sound.

Having discovered the slightest noise, you need to prepare to repair it.

The roller blind fits perfectly into the modern trends of minimalism and simplicity; it will appeal to everyone who loves convenient and comfortable interior details.

Knowing how the mechanisms that control its operation are structured, you will not make mistakes when choosing them in a store or in a catalog and you will know exactly what is right for you and what types of roller blinds are compatible with a particular window.

You can learn how to install roller blinds yourself from the video below.

Features and types of automatic roller blinds

Installation of roller blinds can be carried out in small rooms and in spacious rooms, when installing several systems in them, without wasting time on manually adjusting each one separately. By programming the device, you can control all the curtains on the windows at once or each one separately.

In addition, the advantages of electric drive models can be:

  • Controlling the blade with constant force reduces wear on the entire structure;
  • Budget price for installing the system, especially when it is done independently;
  • Sometimes this is the only possible option, in which the sun filters can be controlled by installing them in hard-to-reach places: on the ceiling or on roof windows;
  • Frequent manual control of systems quickly tires a person, due to the large mass of roller blinds installed on large windows. It is better to immediately purchase a design with an electric drive;
  • A system with small cassettes has been specially developed for plastic tilt-and-turn windows;
  • The guide elements and the frame of the structure have a protective paint coating or are made of laminated aluminum;
  • There are no control circuits or other unnecessary parts;
  • Easy installation, no need to drill holes in frames;
  • The built-in electric motor is powered by a 12V lithium battery;
  • To fully charge the battery from a 220V network, 5-6 hours are enough;
  • Using a modern multi-channel control panel.

Tip: How to adjust roller blinds using the control panel must be thought out in advance. It is easier to install a centralized system right away than to add the necessary functions later. This may increase the risk of technical system failures.

Roller blind mechanisms

When choosing the best roller blinds for your bedroom, you need to consider not only how they will look on the window and protect from the sun’s rays, but also how they are attached.

The method of fastening is determined taking into account the size of the window opening. Automatic or manual roller blinds are relatively small in size and easy to use; they use carefully thought-out mechanisms.

How to open and close roller blinds (description of design control methods) is shown in the table:

Control methodPeculiarities

Mini cassette

An aluminum mini-cassette is inserted inside the guide. The device has a spring mechanism for roller blinds. It retracts or unwinds the canvas, and is mounted on an inclined surface. The mini-cassette can be attached with a special adhesive tape that does not leave marks.

Roller blinds with spring mechanism

Although externally impressive, spring mechanics are not very reliable, and the guarantee for it is given only for a certain time. The springs of the structure, which can be reached by children, fail especially quickly. In order for the curtain to obtain the required position, it moves when the canvas is held by the lower edge. Installation of roller blinds with spring control can be carried out on the ceiling, tilt-and-turn or attic window. In this case, the angle at which it is located relative to the floor surface does not play any role.

Important! Due to the presence of a ball device in the drum, it is necessary to pull out and lift the panel very carefully. A very large force can prematurely damage a sensitive device.

Classic cassette

A full-length classic cassette differs from a mini one in that when rolled up, the curtain goes completely inside, and when unrolled, it covers the entire window opening, not just the glass. The plastic chain allows for more precise blade control. This is a fairly reliable and simple design for controlling curtains on any window.

Chain

The chain mechanism is much more practical than others. In this case, the fabric is wound onto a bobbin, which is connected to a drum. A plastic chain and a retainer pass through its grooves. When the chain moves to the side, the rotation of the drum lowers the fabric or raises it. This is an easy to use device. The disadvantage of this option is the low reliability of the plastic elements: the latch breaks quite quickly, and when heated in the sun, the material dries out, which can lead to a broken chain. But it’s not particularly difficult to purchase new spare parts for roller blinds.
Automated
StationaryIn this case, the button for controlling the canvas is installed next to the window, as can be seen in the photo.
RemoteTo control the curtains, a specially programmed remote control is used. In this case, the device can be equipped with a timer, which will allow you to control the roller shutters at a specific time, like an alarm clock.

Accessories for roller blinds

Fixation

Each type of mechanism is designed to wind or unwind the fabric and fix it in the desired position. In this case, the rotation axes can be attached to the top, bottom of the window, or move simultaneously with the roll, the outer edge of which is fixed.

If you want to ensure smooth movement and good fit to the window when ventilating the room, guides or magnets for roller blinds are used. Flat guides can prevent the bottom bar from deviating from the desired path.

The disadvantage of this solution is that they can only be used on flat areas. If the surface is not too smooth, U-shaped guides with increased profile rigidity are installed. In this case, the ends of the fabric will be closed hermetically, letting in a minimum of light.

Fixation of the lower slats with magnets in the open state is a modern design of roller blinds. When they are partially deployed, the fabric is held by fishing lines located vertically behind the fabric. If the roller blinds are divided into two rolls, a gap between them can be left if necessary.

Operating principle of electric roller blinds

Automatic roller blinds

In automatic blinds, all functions are performed by a specially mounted motor. With its help, the pipe is rotated onto which the product web is wound.

Tip: Before installing the structure, you should carefully determine the weight of the fabric used. If the fabric is heavy enough and is wound around a small pipe diameter, deformation of its walls may occur. In this case, disruptions to the operation of the entire system will occur.

Models of roller blinds come with the motor installed on the right or left of the roll, this will eliminate some technical risks. When you press the control button, the motor turns on. This provokes the curtain to wrap around the pipe, or the curtain to lower.

Automation connection diagram

Tip: If there is a lot of noise during operation, this indicates poor quality installation. In this case, the structure should be dismantled and reassembled correctly. After this, the system will work quietly and will not disturb the owner of the premises.

Automatic roller blind device

Advantages of a spring mechanism or preference for complex solutions

The tight fit of the curtain to the glass and the presence of fabric guides in the design make these mechanisms similar. But spring roller blinds are placed at the top, bottom, on the side of the window frame, whereas cassette samples are only in the first position.

In addition, for the latter, the presence of a chain with the help of which the rise occurs is considered a characteristic feature. The absence of this element in spring roller blinds is a useful design feature, which is explained by the following:

  • curtains have variable placement methods on the window;
  • the aesthetic perception of products is enhanced;
  • the risk of mechanism breakdown is minimized, for example, when curtains are often opened by children;
  • Alternatives are emerging for installing dual systems - day and night, for example.

At first glance, it seems that it is preferable to buy roller blinds with a spring mechanism than with a cassette mechanism. However, the development of designs makes it possible to say that options with a chain are sometimes quite convenient.

Thanks to the new latches, such alternatives remain in demand in the security complex for a window divided into several structural parts. Roller blinds with a spring mechanism are used as a basis.

Thanks to the variability of the systems, they bypass the fittings installed on the double-glazed window frame.

Spring roller blinds - fabrics and design features

For spring roller blinds, dense natural or artificial fabrics are used. Edge processing has alternative solutions.

Usually this is a hem of fabric with a metal strip inserted inside. The handle is attached on top of the fabric or made using a special eyelet.

This detail is considered mandatory in the design, since curtains with a spring mechanism are protected from spontaneous movement. Only applying force to the handle on the machined edge activates the mechanism.

It is also profitable to buy roller blinds with a spring mechanism in situations where you want to regulate the lighting from the standpoint of day and night. For this purpose, it is necessary to secure two products at opposite ends of the window.

The canvases are taken in the same way or differently, muffling sunlight and street light. Using both at the same time will enhance the darkness.

This option is called “night”.

Application options

A spring roller blind costs 2-2.5 times more than a regular one (in case of a shortage of finances, we recommend paying attention to our other offers - MINI, UNI 1, UNI 2), so it still cannot be called mass-produced. But, as we have already said, in some cases such a system can be confidently called the most optimal option.

When we recommend spring roller blinds:

Velux attic systems.

All other mounting options require major design compromises.

You need increased reliability of the lifting mechanism, which is not possible to provide with a traditional plastic chain.

Rigid fixation of the woven fabric is required at a given height and with minimal tolerances.

The design solutions used indoors are incompatible with traditional light-protection structures.

How they are attached: options by type of system

How roller blinds are attached depends entirely on their system.

  • Classic ones are mounted using universal metal or plastic brackets in the window opening, on the wall or ceiling. They are intended rather for installation on door and large window openings.
  • Free-hanging Mini is a practical and reliable system that allows for various mounting options:
  • on springy plastic or metal brackets without fastening to frames;
  • on double-sided tape;
  • fastening to the frame using self-tapping screws.

Uni cassette roller blinds can be mounted with double-sided tape and self-tapping screws or, depending on the design, with springy metal brackets. The modular design of Uni allows them to be mounted on plastic windows without drilling.

Advantages

Cassette roller blinds have a number of positive properties.

  1. The canvas is well fixed.
  2. Reliable protection from the sun and prying eyes.
  3. Compact size.
  4. Simple design, easy installation.
  5. Can be used on different types of plastic windows.
  6. Large selection of materials, varied designs.
  7. The price is comparable to a set of curtains, tulle and cornice.
  8. It does not require special care.
  9. Do not block the window sill. It can be safely used for various purposes.

Cassette roller blinds are securely attached to the window. When the shutters are in ventilation mode, they do not deviate from the glass or sway. Thanks to the tight fit to the window, the sun's rays do not pass through and do not allow anyone to look inside from the street.

The curtain has small dimensions, comparable to the size of the window sashes. The control mechanism is simple and clear, even a child can handle it. Installation does not require much effort and does not take much time. Attach the curtains using self-tapping screws or double-sided tape. First, attach the box, then the guides.

Mini-cassette roller blinds are suitable for PVC windows of various sizes. They are used on windows with a tilt-and-turn mechanism. The window sash can be opened freely in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

You can choose different colors of fabric, plain curtains or with a pattern. The cassette and guides are available in white, painted to match different types of wood, and colored. Curtain materials have varying degrees of light protection. There are options with complete blackout (blackout), which completely protect the windows from light penetration. There are samples that transmit light to a certain extent. You can choose a model for almost any interior.

How to attach it step by step?

Before deciding how to fix it, you need to determine where they will be placed: on the sashes, inside the window, on the wall, etc.

p, blockquote 7,0,0,0,0 –>

The installation can be broken down into the following steps:

  • Measure the window opening

p, blockquote 8,0,0,0,0 –>

Read more: How to measure correctly

p, blockquote 9,0,0,0,0 –>

Depending on the type and location (on the sash, “in the trim” or in the opening, with a classic or spring control mechanism), the methods of fastening also differ.

  • Installation inside the opening

p, blockquote 10,0,0,0,0 –>

Measure the width and height of the window opening. The width of the curtain should be 4 cm less than the width of the opening (i.e. 2 cm on each side). It is necessary to leave a gap between the upper edge of the window and the system so that when it is raised it can open freely, so the height must be at least equal to the height of the opening minus 2 cm.

  • Installation outside the opening

h3 1,0,0,0,0 –>

The window is located in the recess of the wall

This arrangement allows you to cover a fairly large area and, if desired, darken the room. The width of the curtain should be equal in this case to the width of the window opening, increased by 8-10 cm (i.e.

4-5 cm on the sides). The height, in turn, should be at least equal to the height of the opening plus 8-10 cm.

It is imperative to check whether the window will open when the curtain is raised.

The window is in the same plane as the wall (on the wall)

With this arrangement of the handle, it will naturally protrude into the room. Therefore, choose a fastener for roller blinds that allows you to install them at a short distance from the wall. The width of the system is taken to be the width of the window increased by 20 cm (i.e. 10 cm on each side). The height of the curtain is the same as in the previous version.

Installation on casement windows

With this installation option, the window opens along with the curtain. Its width is equal to the width of the transparent part increased by 3 cm (i.e. 1.5 cm on the sides). It should be positioned so that the window handle can be easily turned.

p, blockquote 14,0,0,0,0 –>

Let's consider the standard mounting option using self-tapping screws.

  • Make markings and install the bracket.

p, blockquote 15,0,0,0,0 –>

Measure the required distance (equal) from each edge of the window and mark the position of the first fastening with a pencil. Then a hole is drilled in the designated place into which the dowel is inserted. It must match the material from which the wall is made, say plaster, concrete, etc. Carefully screw the fastener.

  • On the opposite side, markings are made strictly according to the level and a second bracket is installed.

p, blockquote 16,0,0,0,0 –>

It is also recommended to install additional fasteners. It is better to place it about 10 cm from the regulating chain, because it is in this place that the main mechanism experiences maximum load.

  • The curtain is mounted in brackets on the control side.

p, blockquote 17,0,0,0,0 –>

The latches with gears are inserted into the fabric tube and its bracket is placed. If performed correctly, a characteristic click will be heard.

  • Install chain correctors (with curtains open and closed).
  • Check the operation of the system and adjust if the web is wound skewed.
  • Finally, the bracket covers are mounted. They often serve as decorative elements of the entire structure.

h3 4,0,0,0,0 –>

Installation on plastic (metal) hanging brackets

This installation option is only possible on opening window sashes.

  • Hanging structures are placed in standard brackets. (In the case of metal ones, their petals are first bent.)
  • Remove the protective layer from the tape.
  • Attach the brackets to the top of the open sash.
  • Subsequent installation is carried out according to the standard scheme.

h3 5,0,0,0,0 –>

p, blockquote 19,0,0,0,0 –>

Snap on the attachments, which are designed to be glued to the brackets. Degrease the surface of the window profile on which the product will be glued.

  • Heat the tape with a hairdryer.
  • Remove the protective film and glue it to the surface.
  • Installation continues according to the standard scheme.

p, blockquote 21,0,1,0,0 –>

Whatever installation option is chosen, the brackets must be positioned strictly horizontally to avoid distortion of the fabric during operation, and the uncovered section of the chain mechanism must be directed downward.

Roller blinds for plastic windows

Roller blinds for plastic windows are the most popular.

Among all roller blinds, the most compact and inexpensive is the Mini system. It is suitable for mounting on window sashes and for small window openings.

For folding shutters, side fixation or a magnet at the bottom of the curtain are used. The cornice is drilled to the frame without violating its tightness, or it is put on the opening sash using special adapters.

p, blockquote 26,0,0,0,0 –>

However, a more stylish and popular mounting system for plastic windows are mini-cassettes for roller blinds. They come in plastic and aluminum, in various colors. Here, the roll with the curtain is located in a cassette, and the canvas moves along the guides, forming a tight fit of the fabric to the glass, which prevents it from sagging during micro-ventilation.

Dear clients! There are no standard windows! Therefore, cassette roller blinds for plastic windows can only be bought in curtain stores, and not in Leroy! They are made strictly individually according to the size of each window.

If you want to order roller blinds in St. Petersburg, we recommend paying attention to the “Rama Plus” system. The main advantage of this system is that its installation does not require drilling the window frame.

The fabric moves using a spring mechanism, in a special frame, with a side width of 2.7 cm. And if you need to order roller blinds for attic windows, this is exactly the system you need.

Types of roller blinds

Based on the design of the lifting mechanism, the following types of roller blinds for windows should be distinguished: • open • closed. The design of open-type roller blinds consists of a small-diameter shaft (25-35 mm) with curtain fabric.

Under the influence of the lower tensioner beam, you can raise and lower the roller blind to the required height. Adjustment of the set height is carried out using a simple chain mechanism.

Closed-type systems or roller cassette curtains are distinguished by the presence of a decorative box (cassette) covering the upper shaft. The edges of the glazing bead of a closed type system are equipped with

U-shaped guides that prevent sagging of the roller blind fabric.

Design features of closed-type systems: • the versatility of fastening the plastic side brackets allows it to be installed on a slope, sash or window opening • the ability to wind the curtain fabric in the forward and reverse directions • noiseless and soft winding progress. Due to the simplicity of the design and the ability to choose the material for roller blinds, they can be safely introduced into the interior of any room.
