Blinds have been popular for a long time. In recent years, changes have occurred in the production world of lamellas, which have led to the emergence of design solutions for arranging windows of apartments and cottages. This is a universal product for window decoration that does not lose its relevance over time. Many people use it, but few know for sure how to correctly measure for installation.
Designs differ in production materials, shapes, operating mechanisms, external data, and functional qualities. The direct function of the lamellas is to adjust the light flux. They let in and create a barrier to too bright light. A characteristic advantage of blinds is that they do not interfere with frequent ventilation. Do not deform under the influence of fresh air flow. They are easy to care for and do not require additional cleaning products.
Important information about correct measuring procedure
To obtain the most accurate results, use an iron tape measure. Don't try to round numbers. Consider everything down to the millimeter. To correctly determine the size, first measure the width and then the length of the window.
If you are taking measurements on old Soviet windows, you should measure each window sash separately.
Measure all parameters in different places. There may be chips on the windows, which should also be taken into account. As a rule, the assortment of construction markets offers three main types of blinds: horizontal, vertical and woven roller blinds.
How to measure a window to install horizontal blinds
Horizontal blinds are popular among the population. This is due to the fact that they take up less space than vertical ones, so they are suitable for a balcony or loggia. The structure is not massive, it is mounted by drilling. They are made from thin logs of wood: cherry, beech, oak, yew. Regardless of the type of wood, such blinds look elegant, especially if the double-glazed window of the loggia is wooden. Additionally, the models are painted with a layer of paint, thanks to which they shine characteristically in the sun.
To take measurements for a horizontal structure, first decide on the installation method. In order to install the structure, it is necessary to measure the length and width of the glass unit. When purchasing a model, add + 1 cm to the length and + 5 to the width.
Installing horizontal blinds on a sash involves:
- We measure the width of the window opening in several places.
- We make a mark at the widest point.
- Add one centimeter to the width.
- We measure the height.
- Add four centimeters to the height.
You can clearly see the measurements in the photo below:
Measurement for a standard window
How to measure horizontal blinds
1. When installed on the sash and/or window frame: w = width of the glass unit with glazing beads. h = height of the glass unit with glazing beads plus 50 mm (this distance is necessary for installing the cornice).
Blinds installed in this way do not create obstacles to opening the window.
Installing horizontal blinds on a sash or window frame
2. When installed in an opening: w = opening width minus 10 mm h = opening height minus 10 mm
This installation option involves taking measurements of the width and height of the opening in several places (preferably: at the top, middle and bottom). After measuring, select the smallest size and subtract 10mm from it. Indeed, if the slopes are even slightly uneven, the blinds may not fit into the opening.

3. When installed on an opening: w = opening width plus a minimum of 20 mm (these 2 cm are necessary to bridge the gaps) h = opening height plus a minimum of 50 mm (this distance is necessary for installing the cornice)
When installing blinds on an opening, pay special attention to the projection of the window sill. If the window sill does not protrude from the wall, then it will not interfere with the smooth lowering of the blinds. If it protrudes, it is advisable to install blinds up to the window sill.

How to measure for vertical blinds
Vertical blinds are made from fabric, polyester and plastic. The materials are pre-treated with special dust-repellent and antistatic agents. They are easy to care for and clean from dust. In addition, the market offers models made of aluminum. Such structures are heavier than woven or bamboo, but are wear-resistant. The only drawback of the designs is their size. On a small balcony, vertical slats look out of place.
Measuring vertical blinds
Vertical structures are attached to the opening and into the opening. To evenly cover the entire window area with slats, the area on the sides must exceed eight centimeters. Thus, the double-glazed window looks harmonious. When installing on an opening or to the ceiling, we add to the height the area from the ceiling to the window or from the opening to the window. A more detailed measurement mechanism is shown in the photo:
Measuring vertical slats
Roller blinds are a practical option in terms of installation and measurement. They are installed on the wall and to the glass unit. The most popular woven pattern is the zebra system. When measuring, add 1 cm to the total height of the window. The curtain is one solid sheet with a box at the top. When open, the fabric hides in it. Using mounting tape, the box can be easily attached to the double-glazed window. To do this, glue double-sided tape to the structure, which you then press against the window. Before attaching the curtain rod with tape, be sure to degrease the surface of the window. Make sure that the curtain is attached evenly and perform installation strictly according to the markings. The rest of the fabric roller shutters are installed in the same way.

Window blinds are an excellent option for arranging the interior of a home, especially in “technical” rooms: kitchens, bathrooms, verandas, balconies. The selection of texture, width, color and control method allows you to achieve not only purely utilitarian goals - changing the flow of light entering the room from the street, but also achieve a certain decorative effect that meets the design concept.

There is nothing complicated in the installation itself, and even the most ardent opponent of any construction and repair work can cope with it.
The technology of work is as follows:
- put the brackets on the top of the blinds and mark with a pencil the place where the screws are screwed in (it’s good if you can attach the brackets with just one screw, then you won’t have to make many holes in the window);
- remove the brackets;
- take one of them and screw in a self-tapping screw, placing the bracket on the intended area;
- do the same with the second bracket;
- place the blinds on the brackets;
- secure them with side and bottom clamps;

Types of blinds
The installation and, accordingly, the dimensions of the blinds depend on the direction in which the slats are oriented - strips of fabric or strips of metal or plastic.
There are few options: horizontal and vertical.
Horizontal blinds are the most popular in residential areas, as they have a number of advantages, the main one of which is their compactness.
Due to the small width of the lamellas - 5-15 mm, they can be installed in the following positions:
- close to the window glass - flush with the window plastic profile (isolight);
- on top of the plastic window profile - separately on each of the window sashes;
- in the window opening flush with the plane of the wall;
- in the form of curtains covering the window opening from the ceiling to the windowsill.
Depending on this, the dimensions of the blinds can be measured in different ways.
The only tool needed to take measurements is a construction tape.
How to measure other types of blinds
Roller blinds, as another type of blinds, are placed on a wall or in a window opening. If the latter type of installation is used, it is necessary to calculate the width of the opening and subtract 3 cm from this value. For the first option, measure the length of the window structure to the window sill and add 4 cm to this value.
Pleated curtains come in various types, so only a professional should take measurements of the product. The cassette version is placed on the frame. By measuring the distance between the beads and adding 2 cm to it, you will find out the width of the product.
Measurements for horizontal blinds
For blinds that completely cover the window opening, you should measure the height of the window opening from the window sill to the ceiling. The thickness of the window sill +20-40 mm is added to the obtained value.
For blinds located in the window opening flush with the wall, measure the height of the opening minus 10 mm. The width of the opening is minus 20 mm.
For those located on plastic windows – the height of the window profile is minus 20 mm, the width of the window profile is minus 20 mm.
To install Isolite blinds, only plastic windows with a glazing bead design that secures the double-glazed window in a rectangular PVC profile are suitable. Plastic windows with beveled glazing beads are not suitable for installation.
Measure the height of the window glass - from the upper inner edge of the bead to the lower inner edge +50 mm. - this is the length of the canvas. The width of the canvas is determined by the distance from the inner sides of the bead minus 10 mm.
Isolite blinds are equipped with side “U”-shaped guides in which the edges of the slats slide. The guides prevent the canvas from sagging when the plastic window sash is tilted to the “micro-ventilation” position. Therefore, the width of the lamellas is determined by the height of the profile, multiplied by x2 minus 10 mm - 5 mm on each side for free movement along the guides.
Before deciding on the width of the blinds, you need to measure the height of the “U”-shaped profile for the specific model of blinds you have chosen.
How to measure blinds for plastic windows?
Before you begin any action regarding how to install blinds on plastic windows, you need to take measurements. And be extremely careful at this stage so that due to several inaccuracies in the future you do not lose the entire aesthetics of the window as a whole.
There are two options for mounting blinds:
- Fastening with glazing beads - here, take seriously the choice of screws and their length, so that incorrectly selected screws do not lead to depressurization of the double-glazed window, damaging the glass;
- Fastening to a profile - this option is, of course, simpler, but not more practical, because by making a hole in the bead, if necessary, the latter can always be easily replaced, which cannot be said about the profile.
Therefore, in this article we will give preference to the first option.
So, first, measure the width from the left bead, its left edge, to the right bead, its right edge. Next, proceed to measuring the height: from the upper bead, its upper part, to the lower bead, its lower part.
I would like to draw your attention to some nuances:
- when you decide to mount both blinds and lower clamps on glazing beads, check that the length of the blinds is equal to the length of the distance from the base of the glazing beads;
- It is better not to neglect the lower clamps, even if the window does not open, since with them the blinds will be able to maintain their aesthetic appearance much longer, which in this case cannot be spoiled by either carelessly drawn curtains or gusts of wind.
Having made all the measurements and already purchased ready-made blinds, proceed to install them.
Dimensions of vertical blinds
Vertical blinds are a less common option in residential areas. It is more often used in offices or public buildings.
But with a successful selection of fabric colors and textures, vertical blinds can successfully replace curtains.
There can be several options for their location:
- in a window opening;
- over the window opening to the window sill;
- over the window opening to the floor.
In the first case, you should measure the height of the window opening from the window sill to the upper window slope. Subtract 20-30 mm from the resulting value. – sagging of the chains connecting the lower edges of the vertical slats.
The width should be measured along the inner edges of the slopes. Two features of vertical blinds should be taken into account - the width of the lamellas - their number should completely cover the window opening and be located freely in it so as not to overlap each other and not interfere with the rotation of the lamellas around their axis. The second feature is the way the slats are moved: to one side, or from the center to the edges of the window opening.
When selecting the dimensions of the lamellas, the total width of the canvas when fully closed should be 20 mm narrower than the width of the window opening.
When installing blinds on a cornice like curtains, the main dimension is the distance of the cornice from the wall. This distance should be equal to half the width of the lamellas + 20 mm. If the blinds are installed up to the window sill, their length should be 20-30 mm. shorter than the distance from the bottom edge of the cornice + suspension + fastening chains below.
If the blinds are installed below the edge of the window sill, you should measure the distance of the cornice from the most protruding point - the edge of the window sill or heating radiators (grates) + half the width of the slats + 20 mm for free rotation around the axis.
The length of the lamellas “to the floor” is the distance from the floor to the ceiling - minus the thickness of the cornice, minus the height of the suspension, minus 20-30 mm - the sagging of the chains fastening the lamellas.
Terms
Runners are an integral part of vertical blinds for moving and turning the slats.
Valance is a decorative trim that gives the blinds a finished and perfect look.
Lamella - strips of material (fabric, plastic, metal, wood) - the main element of blinds.
Inclined (inter-frame) slats are slats that are installed in the inter-frame space and are fixed directly to the inner frame. When installing blinds in the inter-frame space, they are not exposed to any impact, and therefore their service life is significantly increased, and additional convenience also arises - the window sill is freed up, visually enlarging the room.
Mounts:
A universal mount is a set of devices for installing blinds on all types of windows.
PVC fastening is a set of devices for installing blinds on plastic windows that does not require drilling. Fastening is preferable also for windows that are under warranty.
A roof mount is a set of devices for installing blinds on roof windows that require drilling in the frames.
To the wall: 7.5 cm (length) - this is a mount designed for mounting blinds to the wall, the size of the mount on its larger side is 75 mm.
To the wall: 10.5 cm (length) - this is a mount designed for mounting blinds to the wall, the size of the mount on its larger side is 105 mm.
To the wall: 17.5 cm (extension) - this is a fastening element designed to extend the fastening part of the blinds to the installation site.
To the ceiling is a mount designed for mounting blinds to the ceiling.
To a suspended ceiling (Armstrong) is a mount designed for mounting blinds to the ceiling of the Armstrong system.
Choosing an option for attaching blinds to a window opening
- over the window opening (the cornice is attached to the wall above the window);
- inside the window opening;
- installation inside - on the doors. Which of the three methods is better is up to you to decide, focusing on the design of the window and the type of blinds you choose. Vertical blinds are mounted on the wall over the opening, or less often - directly into the window opening. Rolls, or rolls, are attached in any way. On Russian plastic windows, it is advisable to install blinds on each sash, because thanks to this method, maximum maneuverability will remain in the window area, while the blinds fixed in the window opening will need to be opened and closed every time in order to open the window slightly for ventilation.
If you are the happy owner of a wide European-style window with beautiful overhead slats in the sashes, the method of attaching blinds to the window opening, or over the opening, will suit you. Blinds, mounted exactly end-to-end in the opening, can stand out beautifully against contrasting walls with an open edging of plastic or wood.
You can talk about the beauty of this or that method for a long time, but it is better to make a visual comparison. The illustration below shows what the window looks like when installed outside, inside the opening, or on the sash.
If the clear perimeter of the window frame harmoniously complements the interior, then it is better to install blinds inside the sash. How the size of the window visually changes with different installation methods. The placement of the blinds mounting block above the plastic window also visually lengthens the window.
So, the list of necessary window measurements will depend on the chosen installation method.
How to measure a window to install blinds on the sash
This method is characterized by layering the curtain fabric onto the plastic surfaces of the frame on both sides; it is this margin that will ensure a tight fit of the fabric and eliminate gaps and gaps that would look unsightly from the street at night, and would even partially violate the confidentiality of private life.
- The width of roller blinds and blinds is determined by the distance between the slopes. 100 mm or more is added to this indicator (if there are pipes or any elements on the side of the window that you want to close, then the canvas is increased to the required area);
The length should be measured from the upper slope to the window sill or below (how far below the window sill the canvas will be is determined individually). Further, depending on the type of curtain-blinds, additional centimeters are added to the height under the “package” (the height of the assembled blinds). The “package” must be taken into account when installing blinds above the opening, and always into the opening. You need to make sure that the assembled blinds will not interfere with the opening of the window. For roller blinds, you need to add 5 cm under the package, for aluminum horizontal ones - depending on the height of the blinds - see the table:
When choosing the length of the roller blind, you should take into account the size of the window sill. With a wide window sill, the slats lower to its surface, with a narrow one - to an arbitrary level. Tip: To ensure that the canvas does not lie on the window sill, but only reaches it beautifully, measure the distance from the upper slope to the window sill, and subtract 20 mm - this length will look most impressive .
Please note that for aluminum blinds there are restrictions for large windows: height - no more than 3.4 m, width - no more than 2.85 m, total maximum area - no more than 6 m.
If the blinds need to hide the window sill, you need to take into account the amount of projection of the cornice along with the blinds. If the length is not enough, use special lining rings that come with the blinds, or available materials.
Don’t forget to determine the height at which the control cord plumb line will be located - 15 cm above the bottom edge of the blinds.
Measuring the window when installing it in the opening
In this case, it is advisable to reduce the dimensions of the opening by 1 cm, for a more organic installation: from the width minus 1 cm, from the height minus 1 cm.
Measuring a window for vertical blinds
The first step is to determine the installation method. In all cases, it is recommended to install it on the wall above the window, at a distance of at least 10 cm from the top edge of the opening (to avoid chipping the wall). Installation in an opening is also practiced, but only if the curtain rod does not interfere with the opening of the window sashes.
When installing vertical blinds in a window opening, you need to measure all sides of the opening - left and right (height), top and bottom (width), from the obtained values we take the smaller ones, if there is any discrepancy in the wall panels. Next, subtract 1 cm from the height and width.
To install over the opening, you need to add 8-10 cm in width on both sides to properly close the gaps.
Blinds for plastic windows: measurement and installation
After the plastic windows are installed, you should take care of further interior design. To protect from bright sunlight, blinds are installed. They come in three types:
- horizontal;
- vertical;
- roll
Various materials are used for their manufacture: plastic, fabric, metal, wood, bamboo... In order to correctly carry out the measurements necessary for the manufacture of blinds, certain rules should be taken into account. The main ones are the following.
- During measurements, use only a metal tape measure.
- The obtained measurement results are not subject to rounding.
- In the parameters of the blinds, the first number should correspond to the width, and the second to the height.
- It is necessary to take into account the deviations of the slope planes from the vertical and horizontal.
Measurement for installing horizontal blinds
These blinds are installed in two ways: “on the opening” and “in the opening”. In the latter case, the size of the blinds should not be larger than the size of the window and window opening. Fastening is carried out to the top of the sash and window frame. Installation “on the opening” involves attaching the blinds to the ceiling or wall.
In the event that the blinds will be attached to the shutters, measurements are carried out as follows.
- For each shutter, the dimensions of the blinds are determined separately.
- A blind sash is measured in height - from the window sill to the horizontal (upper) slope and in width - from the right (left) slope to the opening sash. Subtract 1 cm (respectively) from the results obtained and obtain the size of the blinds for the blind sash.
- The tilt and turn sash is measured in height - from the top to the bottom edge and in width - from the vertical edge to the control handle. 1 cm is also subtracted from the results obtained.
Measuring horizontal blinds for installation “on the opening” is carried out in two ways:
- for wall mounting;
- for fastening to a horizontal upper slope.
In the first case, the width and length of the blinds can be chosen freely: this method can hide the imperfections in the finishing of the slopes. Attachment to the upper slope requires accurate measurement of the distance between the vertical slopes, taking into account unevenness. To determine the width, subtract 10-15 mm from the result obtained. The length is limited by the distance between the ceiling and the window sill.
Measurements for installation of vertical blinds
Blinds of this type are installed “in the opening” or “on the opening”: the choice depends on the design of the room and personal preferences. The latter method is preferable: in this way you can hide the curvature of the slopes and heating system pipes. You should pay attention to the protruding window sill: in this case, the cornice is mounted on elongated brackets.
It is important to consider: the width of blinds that roll up on both sides must be a multiple of 16 cm, and if the roll-up is carried out on one side, the width is chosen as a multiple of 8 cm.
The measurement for installation “on the opening” is performed as follows.
- The width and height of the window are determined.
- The width of the blinds should be 20 cm greater than the width of the window.
- To install on the ceiling, you need to add the distance between the ceiling and the window frame to the height of the window.
- Attaching blinds to the wall: the length should be 10 cm greater than the height of the window.
For installation “in the opening”, the dimensions of the blinds are determined:
- 1 cm is subtracted from the width of the opening;
- 2-3 cm is subtracted from the height of the opening.
Measurements for roller blinds
Rolled ones (they are also called Roman) can be installed “in the window opening” or “overlapping”. Any of the methods requires taking into account the size of the cornice - 0.5 cm.
- Installation “overlapping”: we determine the dimensions of the window and increase the width by 10 cm, the height by 20 cm. As a result, we obtain the dimensions of the blinds.
- Installation “in the window opening”: the height of the blinds is equal to the height of the window, and the width is measured taking into account the position of the control handle (for the sash) or is equal to the width of the window.
Using these recommendations, you can independently determine the dimensions of any type of blinds for their production.
Ready-made blinds: dimensions
Parameters of finished horizontal blinds: - height 150 cm - width 30-70 cm - lamella width 16-25 mm.
Dimensions of plastic horizontal blinds: height -160 cm, width - from 40 cm and above, in increments of 10 cm. There are many manufacturers of roller blinds on the domestic market, the largest players are Inspire, Lotari, Eskar, Uyut, New Leader, and others .
All of them offer blinds of any size both through stores and on the Internet; you can always easily find their catalogs and choose the product of the right size.
Roller blinds are a modern and quite attractive way to decorate a window. The products combine the simplicity and convenience of blinds, as well as the aesthetics of conventional curtains and curtains. The variety of materials produced in Holland, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Turkey makes it possible to satisfy any design whim regarding the texture, color and density of the material. However, not everyone knows how to correctly measure roller blinds for plastic windows.

How to measure roller blinds and windows to avoid any flaws: tips and videos
How to measure roller blinds correctly so that the product looks good aesthetically and is also practical. To do this, you need to look at some of the features of the procedure for measuring indicators for each type of curtain separately. After all, they can be made in several versions.
Classic
How to measure roller blinds for plastic windows in the classic version. To begin with, they determine the method of installation work for the future structure. You should find out whether the installation will be carried out in openings or on them.
The values will be as follows:
- Width (hereinafter referred to as “b”) min – 50 cm, max – 300 cm;
- Height (hereinafter referred to as “h”) min – 50 cm, max – 300 cm;
- The length (hereinafter referred to as “l”) of the control is min – 27 cm, there is no maximum.
The maximum permissible dimensions are determined for each type of material individually. DU should not be less than 2/3 of the finished curtain.
Measuring Basic Values
Outside installation:
- Measure b.
- h of the blinds depends on the edges of the window sill - if they protrude, they are measured according to its values, if internal, the dimensions are arbitrary.
- b fabrics = b curtains minus 4 cm.
- The distance between the border and the ceiling is at least 7 cm when installed against the wall.
For installation work from the inside of the opening, the following indicators are needed:
- Width "b".
- Height "h".
- The b of the canvas is calculated by the difference between the “b” of the opening and twice the gap between the bracket and the slope on the side. The minimum value is 5 mm.
Measurements for cassette curtain
Cassette roller blinds are:
Main types
The products do not require special care, but it is advisable to treat them with care. By appearance, curtains are divided into open and closed types.
Open type products
They consist of fabric and a shaft. The open shaft is usually attached to the top of the window (sash) using brackets. The types of fastening depend on the size and area of the window; brackets of larger and smaller sizes are used.
Small brackets (mini system) are usually installed on the window sash, large ones - on the frame or window opening. The fabric is wound onto the shaft. Open type roller blinds are controlled using a chain mechanism. A decorative strip is installed at the bottom of the fabric, thanks to which the fabric does not sag and is evenly wound.
To fix the product (especially when opening a window), magnetic fixation can be used.
With magnetic fixation, an open-type product is fixed using magnets and metal plates (in several places). Fixation on a fishing line occurs along the entire height of the curtain, so it is more practical and effective than magnetic fixation.
Closed type products
Closed roller blinds consist of fabric and a shaft, but the shaft is placed in a plastic or aluminum box, and guide strips are placed along the edges of the fabric, which perform the function of fixing the fabric. Closed-type products are very suitable when you do not plan to use tulle and curtains - for example, when decorating a balcony or loggia. Thanks to the refinement of the aluminum frame, the effect of completing the window design is achieved.
Guides for closed-type products eliminate the possibility of light penetration between glass and fabric,
thanks to which you can achieve complete darkness of the room. Closed-type products can have flat and U-shaped guides.
To add even more sophistication, closed-type products can be equipped with decorative chains of different colors.

Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 1
It is recommended to install on windows with a rectangular glazing bead at least 16 mm deep.
- Height - along the edges of the bead +20 mm.
- Width - along the edges of the glazing bead.
Attention!
In UNI 1 systems, the fabric moves vertically between the guides and the glass. The friction of the bottom bar of the curtain against the glass leads to unclear opening and closing of the blinds. With a bead with a depth of more than 20 mm, the fabric dangles between the guide and the glass, which is also not always comfortable.
The low cost of Uni 1 determines the low consumer quality.
The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).
ATTENTION !
In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Measurements must be taken both in width and height in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.
Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 2
It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.
- Width according to the external dimensions of the guides.
- Height according to the external dimensions of the product (take into account the height of the box 70 mm). We recommend taking the height of the product with a margin of 10–20 mm, since if you make a mistake with the dimensions, you can remove the plugs from the guides and cut them to height.
In UNI 2 systems, the fabric moves vertically along U-shaped guides. They can be installed both on the glazing bead (if it is not semicircular) and on the frame (if the installation will not be interfered with by the window opening handle).
Installation on the frame is recommended when blackout fabric is used. In this case, maximum overlap in width is achieved and gaps (gaps) at the edges of the fabric are reduced.
ATTENTION! In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Width measurements must be taken in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.
The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds). The tape on the box is about 30mm wide at the top. When measuring, it is necessary to take into account that at least 40 mm must be left at the top to secure the box on a flat surface so that the tape adheres correctly. Often the bead is recessed, and if you try to attach the cassette with tape to a recessed bead, the product will soon fall off.
Rules for measuring Uni 2 cassette roller blinds with springs
It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.
- Height - along the outer edges of the glazing bead (junction line with the frame) (+) 20 mm.
- Width - at the junction of the glazing bead with the frame (according to the external dimensions) or along the edges (indicate in the form which measurement option). For details, see the section “Measuring Uni 2”;
- The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).
Measuring free-hanging roller blinds
- Width – indicate the dimensions of the PRODUCT (if necessary, install in the opening). This is the maximum width at the top of the roller blinds, fastening the fabric winding mechanism. For fabric, the parameter will be 2.5–4 cm smaller (depending on the dimensions of the product).
- Width – indicate the dimensions ACCORDING to the FABRIC (if necessary, install on the opening, window sash). Take into account the dimensions of the free opening so that the window handle or hinge does not interfere.
- The height indicated in the form is the actual height of the product (i.e., the dimensions of the finished product along with the height of the shaft).
- The length of the control cannot be less than 2/3 of the height of the finished product.
- Large product sizes (more than 1.5 m in height or width) may be limited by a specific fabric (each roll has its own dimensions).
- The curtain winding mechanism (shaft) can be secured using tape (included with the blinds).
- The bottom bar of the curtain can be fixed in the lower position using magnets that are attached to the frame at the bottom of the window. If necessary, indicate in the order.
- It is necessary to mark on the form whether the roll is visible or not (see figure).
ATTENTION! This technique for measuring blinds is not standard. Due to the variety of window frame shapes, measurement rules may change.

Window measurement
In order for roller blinds to have an aesthetic appearance and high practicality, you need to understand how to measure correctly. Roller blinds are divided into several types, and each has its own characteristics of taking measurements.
Classic version
To correctly measure curtains that will subsequently be used for plastic windows, you first need to find out exactly where the roller blinds will be mounted. They can be attached to the window frame itself or on the window opening.
What measurements need to be taken:
- Curtain width – “B”. Minimum width – 50 cm, maximum – 300 cm.
- Height – “H”. The minimum curtain height is 50 cm, the maximum is 300 cm.
- The length of roller blinds is marked “L”. The minimum length is 27 cm and ad infinitum.
Each type of roller blind has its own acceptable dimensions. They directly depend on the type of material from which they are made. The control length cannot be less than 2/3 of the finished product.
Fastening directly to the window opening:
- “H” depends on the length of the protruding parts of the window sill. If the window sill is flush, then the dimensions are at your discretion.
- If installation is carried out on a wall, boundaries must be respected. The distance between the roller blind and the ceiling must be at least 7 cm; it must be carefully measured.
Cassette
Uni-1 cassette roller blinds are measured as follows:
- “B” is measured along the width of the glass unit, along the vertical of the window. The measurement is taken very accurately.
- “H” measurements are carried out in the same way as “B”, only horizontally. Which side the control will be located on is determined individually - at the request of the customer.
- Level “H” depends on calculations and is 2/3 of the length of the product.
Uni 2 must be measured very carefully. The location of the fittings on the plastic window is of great importance when taking measurements:
- “B” is equal to the width of the glass unit + 6.8 cm. We must not forget that the width of the product is 2 cm less, that is, a minimum of 25 cm and a maximum of 120 cm.
- “H” is equal to the distance between the top of the upper plug and the bottom of the lower plug of the guidance system. The minimum is 20 cm and the maximum is 150 cm.
Determining the size of roller blinds according to the Mini type:
- The mount is installed on the window frame. To do this, measurements are taken “B” (directly of the double-glazed window itself), then you need to add the width of the glazing bead, it is approximately 0.4 cm. The remaining dimensions are calculated in the same way. Then you should choose a convenient side to control the curtain mechanism. The approximate length of the lace is 2/3 of “H”.
- In the event that a metal-plastic window is opened for ventilation, fixing chips for curtains are attached to its lower part. The clamps are needed so that during ventilation the roller blinds or blinds do not sweep away everything on the windowsill.
The following locking options are available:
- magnetic latches;
- fishing line
There are several ways to attach a curtain rod:
- using screws;
- on special double-sided tape;
- suspended structure.
Roman
First, you need to decide where exactly this curtain will be located. Such a curtain can also be installed on a metal-plastic window or on the window opening itself. You need to be very careful when taking measurements during internal installation.
To determine the size of the Roman model, you need to take measurements “H” and “B”. Using the measurements taken, carry out the necessary calculations:
- add 15 cm to “B”;
- add 20 cm to “H”;
- at the end of installation, “B” and “H” are approximately 0.8 cm smaller.
"Day Night"
This type of curtains can also be installed on a metal-plastic frame or on a window opening. When it comes to Day-Night curtains, you need to calculate the following: add 1.5 cm to “B” and 15 cm to “H”.
If the curtain is attached directly to a metal-plastic frame, measurements are taken in three places “B” and three places “H”. We take the smallest values as the height of the opening. If there are corner slopes, measurements are taken from the place where the curtain will hang in the future. “B” is equal to “B” of the window opening minus 5 mm. “N” equals “N” of the window opening.
For frame allowances, measurements of the height of the glazing bead and the width of the window frame are used. The distance between the curtain and the handle on the window should be approximately 1 cm, you can mark it on the fabric. It’s worth trying on as carefully as possible.

How to correctly measure roller blinds for plastic windows
Roller blinds are a type of fabric window shading that replaces regular curtains or blinds. They are chosen by adherents of minimalism in the interior; they complement a variety of types of curtains, knowing how to measure roller blinds correctly for the desired effect. Roller blinds require a minimal amount of fabric and take up little space, in addition they require a minimum of maintenance.
The overall appearance of the window depends on the correct choice of curtains. How to choose the right size for this type of curtain? What do you need to consider to make the right choice? It would seem that these are small nuances, but they affect the appearance of the window as a whole and the functionality of all devices.
In order to select the required size of roller blinds, you will need to measure the dimensions of the window. When taking measurements, be sure to calculate the width of the roller blind. The length, in most cases, is made standard - approximately 2 meters. This size should be sufficient for most standard modern designs.
Window measurement
For accurate measurements, the following recommendations must be taken into account:
Using a tape measure, we measure the glass in width and length (along the sash). The data obtained will help determine the design that is suitable for the window. It is also necessary to measure the depth of the bead. With a depth of 1.5 centimeters, the “Uni” curtain is suitable. For sizes less than 1.5 centimeters (and inclusive), you should opt for the “Profil” or “Mini” system designs.
The overall width is the width of the curtain. Therefore, the size of the tube on which the rolled fabric is attached will be the necessary parameter in measuring the width of the curtains.
Measurements of different types of curtains
In order to correctly measure roller blinds for plastic windows, it is necessary to study the features of each type of design.
Classic
The first step is to decide on the type of installation work, or rather where the classic roller blinds will be located: on the outside of the opening or inside the opening. You should get the following measurement values:
- Width (hereinafter referred to as “b”) from 0.5 to 3 m;
- Height (hereinafter referred to as “h”) from 0.5 to 3 m;
- Length (hereinafter referred to as “l”) of control is from 0.27 m and above (the maximum value is not established). The size of the control length should not exceed 2/3 of the total length of the assembled curtain.
Outdoor installation
For outdoor installation, the following steps will be required:
- Measurement b.
- Depending on the edge of the window sill, h changes. For the internal location of the window sill, the numbers can be at your discretion.
- b curtains minus 4 centimeters = b linens.
- If installation takes place directly to the wall, then the border from the ceiling to the fastening should be 7 centimeters.
Indoor installation
For the internal type of fastening (in the opening), the following measurements are taken into account:
- "h"
- "b"
- To calculate b of the canvas, it is necessary to calculate the difference between twice the distance from the bracket and the side bevel to b of the opening. The value should not exceed 5 centimeters.
Cassette curtain
Among the cassette types of roller blinds, there are Uni-1, Uni-2, Mini.
Uni-1
- To calculate b, measure the distance in a vertical position between the ribs of the beads. The measurement accuracy is up to hundredths of a centimeter.
- H is the distance between the ribs in a horizontal position. The side for regulating the degree of opening of the product is selected arbitrarily. Level h is an individual value, constituting 2/3 of the total length of the curtain.
- After installation, Uni-1 should be installed between the ribs of the glazing beads.
Uni-2
When making dimensional measurements, the customer’s wishes and the features of the window frame are taken into account. The location of the fittings (handles or hinges) is also of no small importance.
- For the value of b, the distance between the ribs of the cap is taken into account. 6.8 centimeters are added to it.
- The distance between the outer parts of the structure should be a couple of centimeters less (from 0.25 to 1.2 m).
- H for this design is the distance between the lower and upper points of the system plug (from 0.2 m to 1.5 m).
Mini
In the Mini design, mini curtains are installed on each window sash separately. To do this, you need to know the b value of the light opening. It increases by 0.4 centimeters to take into account the glazing bead and fasteners. All other calculations are similar. The side for the location of the control device is chosen arbitrarily. The chain for winding the fabric onto the pipe is counted as 2/3 of h.
The lock for the lower cornice is installed when the window sash has a tilt-and-turn mechanism. Thanks to this, when ventilating, the flaps will not hang over the window sill.
The clamp for the lower cornice has two types of fastening:
- magnetic, in which magnets are installed on screws;
- brackets on fishing line.
Methods for attaching the upper cornice:
- screws;
- on double-sided tape;
- on hanging brackets - for the sash.
Measurements for Mini roller blinds. The first step is to measure the width and height of the glass (up to the sash). 3 centimeters are added to the numbers for width and 12 for height. Next, the location of the control mechanism is determined. It is better if it is near the loop. Next, select the mounting method (screws or double-sided tape).
Mini curtains are installed only on the doors.
UNI
There are two types of curtains of this type - UNI-1 and UNI-2.
UNI-1
The type is suitable for different windows, with different design features. Very popular in modern design. The color scheme of the box can be easily matched to the color of the frame, creating visual integrity. Standard size is 200×175.
To select this type, the following measurements are required:
- 2 centimeters are added to the height between the glazing bead ribs for reserve.
- Width is measured in the same way without any additions.
Curtains of this type have one drawback - the bottom bar rubs against the glass, which leads to the appearance of bevels and even cracks. This disadvantage is especially evident when the bead depth is 2 cm.
UNI-2
This type is the most acceptable and universal. Mounted on almost any surface with varying relief. If the bead depth is more than 2 cm, then this option will be the most acceptable. Uni-2 curtains have guides in the shape of the letter “P”, which ensures clear fixation and absence of friction. The likelihood of cracks and bevels appearing is extremely low.
Measuring roller blinds to select the size:
The width must be measured according to the external dimensions of the curtain guides. To calculate the required height, the value of the external dimensions is added to the height of the box (about 7 cm). The most recommended value by experts is from 1 to 2 centimeters, since if an error is made, the excess can be cut off by removing the plugs from the pipe.
Profile
Before purchasing a system, the profile should be measured:
- b between the corners of the sash.
- h, taking into account the size of the glass, the sash that must open.
In addition to plastic windows, the “Profil” system is installed on doors.
Day Night
Roller blinds can be installed in various ways. There are external and internal fastenings, and fastening to the frame.
Required measurements for each method:
- For outdoor installation, b is measured and 15 centimeters are added to it. In the h dimension, plus 15 centimeters is added to the opening dimensions.
- For internal fastening it is necessary to take measurements at three points h and b. For height, the smallest values are suitable. If the slopes are angular, then the mark is the place where the blade is attached. For b, 5 millimeters are subtracted from the measured value, and h remains unchanged.
- Fastening to the frame is carried out by measuring b along the bead and h of the frame. The minimum distance from the fabric and handle should not exceed a centimeter. Marks are made directly on the product.
Subtleties in calculations
The most practical way to position the control system is so that the cord does not collide with the window handle during operation. The length of the lace of the mechanism is set at the request of the customer.
It is very important to take correct window measurements when choosing roller blinds
, especially if they are fastened with self-tapping screws. The products are completed with a box for the upper part and guide elements - at the request of the buyer. If the curtain box is decorative, it is secured with special fasteners. Measuring roller blinds for plastic windows is not at all difficult. You need to follow the advice of experts, and you will do all the calculations as quickly as possible.
The main thing is maximum care; you need to measure very carefully. In this case, the result will not disappoint you - the curtains will fit the window opening just perfectly.
Increasingly, the interior of a modern apartment is decorated with stylish blinds. They are more practical and easy to use than the curtains we are all used to. When ordering this product, it is very important to know the exact dimensions of the window in order to make a structure of the appropriate size. Many companies provide measuring services for free if you place an order with them. But for those who want to buy a finished product or do not want to pay for the services of a professional to measure, you can complete this task yourself. So, how to measure blinds correctly?
To ensure that the readings taken are as accurate as possible, several specific rules have been identified that can help every novice master:
- It is recommended to measure blinds using a steel tape measure. It is she who will show the most accurate indicators;
- You cannot round the result. The resulting figure must be written down exactly to the millimeter.
- The result is written in a certain sequence: 1 - width, 2 - length. This order is important when ordering, and this is the most common mistake.
- In order for the blinds to fit perfectly, dimensions must be taken at different levels for each parameter. Very often windows are uneven, and without taking this feature into account, the finished product may rise and fall poorly.

Mounting methods
It is important to note that the measurement method will differ depending on some details. For starters, this is the type of blinds themselves, but the method of fastening the structure also plays an important role. The mounting method can be:
- On the wall - when they are attached to the ceiling or wall;
- In the opening - if the product’s dimensions are equal to the size of the opening;
- On the sash - the structure is installed directly on the frame.
It is important to remember that in the first two cases it does not matter where the control mechanism is located, on the right or on the left. If mounted on a sash, it must be placed so that the structure does not interfere with the opening of the sash.
Measurements of openings for horizontal blinds
Such blinds can be mounted on the sash, directly into the opening or on top of it, on the wall. In the first case, the master will measure the distance between two window glazing beads - the one on which the structure plans to be attached, and the bottom one. In this case, the height of the fastener itself must be taken into account - only a representative of the company manufacturing the product knows its dimensions exactly.
Decide whether there is a need to leave gaps along the edges of the product, and if not, the measurer will add 30 mm to the resulting width of the future blinds (it is also measured between the glazing beads). To determine the height of the canvas, he will simply measure the length of the sash.
Will the blinds be mounted inside the window opening? In this case, its height and width are measured, but always at several points, since the openings may not be strictly rectangular. Be sure to take into account the presence of rubber sealing elements and their dimensions, as well as the protrusion of the curtain rod - it should not rest against the details of the opening or window.
If the light protection is mounted on the wall over the opening, its width must be at least 10 cm larger than it. The height of the product is determined by the owner of the room or his interior designer: you can choose blinds slightly higher than the window sill or going down below it. In this case, the height of the cornice of the product must be taken into account.
Horizontal blinds
This type of design is the most common. They were the first to appear on the market, and are still successfully sold. Horizontal structures are practical to use, easy to care for, and they look very harmonious in the interior.
For installation "on the sash"
For this method, it is necessary to take measurements from bead to bead on both sides of the light opening. To avoid any gap left on the sides, it is necessary to add 30-40 mm to the result obtained. To find out the required height, you need to measure the height of the sash itself.
Measurement "in the opening"
Window openings are often uneven, so each indicator must be measured in several places (on the sides and in the center). Of the results obtained, the largest one is considered correct.
The width of the blinds is determined as follows: measure the width of the glass in the light opening and add the size of the seal to the resulting figure. The length is measured in a similar way: measure the length of the glass, add the size of the seal and another 1 spare cm.
In addition, it is worth noting that the cornice of the product is 72 mm larger, so it will protrude 36 mm on both sides. You need to calculate the size so that this cornice does not rest against the walls or hinges. It is also very important to take into account that the design should not interfere with the opening of the sash.
The chain of the lifting mechanism is located, as a rule, on the hinge side, and its size is 2/3 of the length of the window.
For fastening "on the opening"
If you decide to mount the product to the wall, then the dimensions of the blinds themselves should be larger than the dimensions of the window opening. The width of the opening is 10 cm smaller than the finished product, and the buyer chooses their height depending on his preferences. But it is important to note that the size must exceed the length of the opening by 5 cm.
MEASUREMENT OF BLINDS “ISOLITE” and “ISOTRA”
- Measure the light opening of the window without taking into account the sealing rubber bands of the glazing bead.
- Select the location of the control circuit. (recommended from the hinge side of the window)
- Specify the length of the control chain (at least 50 cm)
- Specify the depth of the glazing bead. (depth from the outer surface of the profile to the glass).
- Pay attention to whether the cornice will not rest against the hinges and slopes (it protrudes 36 mm on each side relative to the edge of the lamella).
Acceptable sizes of blinds of the “IsoliteM” and “Isotra” systems:
- Height – up to 2.2 m.
- Width – from 0.25 to 2.5 m.
- Maximum area: 2.5 sq.m.
Vertical blinds
This type of blinds is considered a more elegant and sophisticated option compared to horizontal ones. But they can be mounted only in two ways: “on the wall” or “on the opening”. When choosing an installation option, it is important to take into account the shape and size of the window, but the design preferences of the residents of the house are no less important.
Installation "on the opening"
Installing a vertical structure in this way will help hide many of the window's shortcomings: radiators, slanting frames, etc. In addition, this product can be an excellent addition to the interior. It is very important to take into account the protrusion of the window sill; if it is more than 6 cm, then it is worth lengthening the bracket a little.
Measuring “at the opening” involves mounting the structure on a wall or ceiling. In both cases, it is necessary to measure the width and height of the window. You need to add 20 cm to the resulting width result (the product will protrude 10 cm beyond the window on both sides). With the height of the product, everything is a little more complicated. For installation on a wall, you need to add at least 10 cm to this indicator. And if the product will be attached to the ceiling, you need to measure the distance from the window to the ceiling and add the result to the height.
For installation "in the opening"
This installation option allows you to save useful space in the room. In addition, measuring “in the opening” is relevant if there is any furniture near the window. But it is very important that the window is level and the distance between the frames is the same at all levels. Many people prefer this option also because it is cheaper.
It’s very easy to get the desired result; we measure the height and width of the window. Subtract 1 cm from the resulting width, and 2-3 from the height.
Types of blinds by design type
Such light-protective structures are distinguished by structural and design diversity. They can be assembled from different materials:
According to the shape and type of arrangement of the lamellas, they are divided into:
Due to the fact that measurements for each type of such light-protective structure are carried out according to a special scheme, the installation of blinds of different types is usually carried out by specialists. offers not only a large selection of different types of blinds and the production of a specific model for windows of a certain shape, but also high-quality installation.
Measurements of horizontal blinds
Designs with horizontally located lamellas are considered universal due to their convenience and ease of use. How to correctly measure horizontal blinds?
First of all, you should determine the installation method: in the opening or on the frame. In the first case, the structure can be attached to the ceiling or into the wall. In the second, directly on the sash.
When installing “in the opening”, you can use blinds of different sizes. In this case, you need to measure the width and height of the window opening. When ordering, you must specify the width parameters, which must be equal to the width of the window opening + 1 cm minimum. When fixing the length, indicate the height distance to which at least 5 cm is added.
Installation “on the sash” allows you to open the window without raising the lowered blinds, which is very convenient. In this case, the unfolded slats do not cover the window sill, which can be used for arranging indoor flowers.
In this case, measurements are taken as follows:
- measure the width in several places, choosing the largest size;
- measure the height in the same way;
- add 1 cm to the final width;
- add 3 cm to the final length.
Installation of vertical structures is usually carried out according to the mounting pattern in the opening. Roller blinds can be hung in one or another way.

Roller blinds
Roller blinds, or Roman blinds in other words, are the most in demand today. They are very practical and easy to use, and most importantly, they take up virtually no space and are ideal for rooms with a small area. Roman blinds do a good job of their intended purpose: with their help it is very convenient to regulate the lighting in the room. If necessary, create twilight by folding the product to the middle, completely darkening the room, or vice versa, open the window and enjoy natural light.
This type is installed in two ways: “in the window opening” or “overlapping”. Another relatively new system is “day-night”. For each installation method, you need to add 0.5 cm to each indicator.
Installation "in the opening"
Important for this setup. To ensure that the window is level, otherwise you need to choose another option. Taking measurements is very simple: as usual, we measure the height of the opening and the width. It is these indicators that are important for the manufacturer.
Overlapping measurement
We measure the width and height of the window. Add 10 cm to the width result, and add 20 cm to the height.
Roman blinds "Day-Night"
In this case, the width of the window must be measured from bead to bead, along their outer edge. The height of the product will be equal to the height of the window along the frame. The result obtained is the necessary indicators.
How to measure a window for blinds: what to look for?
It is better to use a steel tape measure to take measurements. Only she will show the result as accurately as possible. Any other tool will not work. When taking measurements, their accuracy is important. Therefore, you should not round the obtained values. They must be specified to the nearest millimeters.
Measurements are carried out in a certain sequence. You need to start with the width. After this you can start working on the length. Quite often many people make a mistake in this process. As a result, the values when ordering goods are confused. It is worth clearly understanding that the manufacturer regards the first number as the width, and the second as the length of the window.
It is impossible to say that the opening in all places is the same size. Since it is not perfectly rectangular in shape, often the slopes are not level and many other things do not meet the requirements that are placed on them. Therefore, experts recommend measuring the window in several places. This will avoid mistakes that will cause the blinds to open or close poorly.
Measure horizontal blinds
There are several types of blinds: horizontal, vertical and roller blinds. They can be used for any window, even plastic. But the most popular among consumers are horizontal ones. Despite the fact that they appeared on our market with everything recently, they have won the love of customers. It's easy to explain. They are easy to use. But the process of measuring them has its own characteristics.
Before you start, you should decide where exactly the blinds will be mounted. They can be located in the window opening itself, on the ceiling, walls or on the frame itself. Depending on this, measurements are taken. Because they will have different meanings. In this case, one centimeter is added to the length, and five to the width.
If the blinds will be mounted on the sash, then the measurement is carried out along the glazing beads that are on the window: from one to the other. In this case, it is worth determining whether space for clearance is necessary. If not, then add 0.5 cm to the resulting value. The window sash will help determine the length. This list of operations is traditional and is mainly used. If additional fastening elements are required, it is better to consult a specialist. This option for mounting the product is well suited for large windows. It is almost invisible, takes up little space and looks beautiful.
Technical blinds
To begin with, it is important to determine what technical blinds actually are. This product is intended for installation on ventilation. It looks quite nice and is not noticeable. When taking measurements, it is worth remembering that the grille must completely cover the ventilation hole.
As a rule, the sizes of air ducts in all rooms are made standard. For industrial facilities this is 150*490, for residential premises (installed in the kitchen or bathroom), this figure is equal to the width 100-150, and the height 150-200.
