The tradition of carved kitchen furniture also existed in Europe. There, the facades of cabinets and small wall cabinets, the backs of chairs, and wooden chests were decorated in this way. Solid wood furniture fronts with carved decorations are a classic option for kitchen design.

Advantages and disadvantages

Using carved parts to decorate a kitchen has many advantages:

  • returns to its roots and preserves traditions;
  • gives a feeling of warmth and a special cozy atmosphere;
  • makes the interior individual and unique;
  • gives a lot of scope for creativity;
  • you can constantly add small details;
  • wood is an environmentally friendly material, and it is easier to breathe in such rooms;
  • carved interiors have a great pedagogical effect: young people often get excited about the idea of learning artistic creativity.

But it is not without its drawbacks:

  • such furniture is difficult to keep clean: it requires some effort;
  • wood easily absorbs odors and moisture;
  • wooden furniture does not combine well with artificial materials, and therefore you need to carefully consider the decor of the apron and ways to preserve wooden work surfaces;
  • if there are a lot of wooden carved surfaces in the kitchen, then most modern household appliances will have to be put away in cabinets;
  • it’s very easy to get carried away and overdo it with carvings, turning the kitchen into a museum; such furniture is expensive;
  • ordering furniture according to drawings and drawings, its production takes a lot of time;
  • It can be difficult to find a good master.

Kinds

We have been engaged in carving since the times of Ancient Rus'. Over the centuries, basic techniques have been formed and a classification has been developed.

The following types of carvings are used to decorate kitchen facades:

  • slotted carving: when working, chisels and cutters are used; openwork products are obtained;

    slotted carving of furniture in the kitchen
    Slotted carving of furniture in the kitchen

  • cutting thread: a saw and a jigsaw are used here; also a type of openwork carving;
  • flat-notched carving: it is performed with a chisel and a knife; carving elements are recessed into the background;
  • relief carving: all carving elements rise above the background;
  • blind thread; has an uncut background, a high pattern without smooth areas;
  • applied carving: the design is made with a slotted carving and is glued onto a flat wooden surface, sometimes it comes in a different color.

In the manufacture of decorative parts, all types of carvings are used. Sometimes for interior decoration they take products made using the technique of sculptural carving.

Modern workshops that now produce such furniture do it on machines.

Most decorative elements are used for cabinet doors and drawer fronts. For kitchen cabinets, including sets, the technique of overhead and blind threads is used. And corner posts are often made using sculptural carving techniques.

The backs of chairs and armchairs, wall shelves and the walls of open shelving are made using the openwork carving technique.

It is not customary to decorate countertops with carvings, but in large kitchens there can be large tables decorated with wood-on-wood mosaics, which look incredibly stylish and unusual.

Additional design

A distinctive feature of all the listed patterns is their independence. In essence, they are so self-sufficient that they often become separate elements of the interior.

However, often some ornaments require the right support to open up to their full potential. For example, you can decorate your bed with an airy oriental-style canopy or a silk bedspread that will convey the era of Victorian England.

Children's beds can be painted in different shades, and a bunk model can be equipped with a carved staircase that will connect the patterns of the legs and backs into one composition. Images can also be decorated with metal inserts or some details can be coated with bronze and gold.

There are options when the carving alternated with soft fabric inserts, repeating the upholstery of the canopy or bedspread. In a word, if you feel that the carving does not sufficiently reflect your views, you always have several options to make it your own.

Of course, carving on the surface of the back or legs is considered the most expensive and truly labor-intensive. Only masters of their craft can dare to do this, but their work will definitely not leave anyone indifferent. If financial strength does not allow you to make such an expensive investment, you can always resort to the option where only carved parts are made, which are subsequently applied to the surface of the headboard. Perhaps such a pattern will seem somewhat simple, but it will certainly not lose its aesthetic value. The correct choice of image and artist will allow you to create an exquisite masterpiece using this technique.

Living in a classic interior is very difficult and expensive; it requires a special outlook on life and a special attitude towards the world. However, if you decide to take such a step, all your surroundings should correspond to the image, and the furniture on which you spend most of your life is no exception. Want to sleep like a king? As you know, wood is an incredibly malleable, comfortable material that has been used since ancient times. It was used for decoration and decoration of ceremonial architectural structures, temples, and ordinary housing. Today's popularity of carving is, to some extent, a tribute to the fashion for eco-materials and closeness to nature. Pretentious patterns have become an alternative to modern restraint and minimalism.

Wood carving will add individuality to your home and emphasize the elegance of tastes.

To solve various problems and ultimately obtain original, unique decorative elements using carvings, various types of wood will help...

Linden. Due to its softness, it is the most sought after material for this craft technique. Linden produces small, even miniature products: photo frames, toys, boxes, household items with expressive ornaments. Working with linden is very easy. This is where you should start mastering carving techniques.

Oak. Famous for its durability and hardness. It is used to create massive panels, and carved wooden oak furniture not only looks attractive and durable on the outside, but will also last for decades.

Pear. It is valued for its unique qualities - it almost never warps or cracks. As a valuable raw material, it is used to create exclusive interior items, decorative elements and souvenirs.

Alder. Endowed with a noble color: deep red, purple, black, it is often used as a substitute for valuable species.

Pine, yew, spruce and cedar - the characteristics of the material allow you to create massive carved sculptures, decorative trims, and cornices.

Valuable tip: Extremely dry air can cause wood to crack, so to maintain carvings, you need to maintain optimal humidity levels, and it may be worth purchasing a humidifier.

Types of wood carving.

Carving does not have a strict classification. Modern styles can simultaneously combine several techniques of manual woodworking, but several basic principles of carving can be distinguished.

Through carving (openwork or slotted) is the complete removal of wood and background along the boundaries of the pattern. It can be either simple or openwork; in this case, the patterns can have different heights and the edges are processed. This method is used to make frames, trims, doors and decorative elements. Very often, this type of carving is used for zoning space - this is a very characteristic technique, for example, for oriental-style rooms. Wood carving with a jigsaw is the main technique for obtaining these light, almost weightless patterns.

Flat grooved thread. This type of carving is characterized by the fact that the base in this case is a flat background, and the carving elements themselves are recessed into it - the lower level of the carving elements is located below the background level.

There are several subtypes of flat-notch carving: contour - the pattern on a flat background comes out using grooves, which can be semicircular or triangular, it depends on the choice of chisel for wood carving, although this effect can be achieved with an ordinary knife.

How to decorate

When using carved elements in the kitchen, you need to follow some rules:

  • all carved parts must be made of the same type of wood;
  • You should not use more than two types of thread;
  • on the back walls of cabinets decorated with wood carvings, it is worth installing mirror panels; they increase the illumination of the room and thus shift the emphasis to decorative details;
  • in the upper cabinets, the doors are replaced with glass or decorative grilles made of false MDF panels;
  • the exclusivity of the furniture will be emphasized by the combination of carvings, stained glass and glass with a pattern, besides, this technique visually enlarges the room;
  • To decorate the walls, you can use paintings and photographs in carved frames or frames made of wooden molding.

In the video - how to decorate carved furniture in the kitchen:

You can decorate your kitchen with carvings without installing furniture with carved parts.

The cornices, two or three shelves, possibly a dishware, and picture frames are decorated with carvings. Carved bread bins and vases are placed in a prominent place, two or three small carved shelves are hung, a carved lampshade for a chandelier, figurines carved from wood, which can be placed in different places, are also possible.

You can make an interesting carved bench-stand for flowers on the windowsill.

If there is carved furniture in the kitchen, then you should think about whether small carved objects will overload the interior?

Flat grooved thread

This type of carving is characterized by the fact that the base in this case is a flat background, and the carving elements themselves are recessed into it - the lower level of the carving elements is located below the background level. There are several subtypes of flat carving:

  • contour - a pattern on a flat background is obtained using grooves, which can be semicircular or triangular, it depends on the choice of chisel for wood carving, although this effect can be achieved with an ordinary knife;

  • bracketed - a pattern is created by applying semicircular notches-brackets to a flat background;
  • geometric (trihedral, trihedral notched) - in this case, two types of elements are used: a peg and a trihedral pyramid, recessed inside. To obtain them, special knives for wood carving are used - jambs. With the help of pegs and pyramids, used repeatedly, at different distances and at different angles, you can get patterns in the form of geometric shapes: rhombuses, chains, radiances, honeycombs, swirls, etc.

  • black varnish carving - in this case, I use a flat surface coated with black paint or varnish as a background. Against this background, the pattern is created using grooves - due to the different profile and depth of the grooves, you can get an original play of chiaroscuro, and the black background contrastsly emphasizes the cut out light grooves

Black varnish type of work is a very interesting way to create decor

How to care

It’s not easy to keep a kitchen like this clean. This requires not only special knowledge, but also a lot of time and effort.

First you need to determine what cleaning liquid you can use if water and a rag are ineffective: to do this, you need to wipe a small piece of wood in an inconspicuous corner, let the surface dry and watch the reaction. But you should use chemicals only in exceptional cases, for example, to clean greasy stains on spice racks.

It is very important to wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth as often as possible, you should not allow dust to penetrate into the pores of the wood, as this will make it lose its decorative appearance, but in order to clean carved surfaces, it takes time and patience, so sometimes you can use soft dust brushes.

Lacquered facades must be wiped with a special product to keep the surfaces shiny. The tabletop requires special care. You can’t put hot things on it, spilled liquids should be cleaned up immediately, and you shouldn’t leave food on the surface, the smell of which could be absorbed by the wood.
